The confrontation between the East and the West is coming to an end, but not between East and West Germany. The old party leaders are still sitting in their offices, not changing anything and waiting for exclamations from Moscow. But their end is close – Gorbachev and Kohl have already decided...

The developers couldn't change the fact that the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union collapsed in real life, so they coded a miserable, gray spreadsheet where players can pretend that if they just banned rock music and rationed milk a little harder, the USSR would have conquered the world. It’ less of a political strategy game and more of a digital security blanket for guys who wish it was still 1985 in Moscow.- one may think after playing it. Positive side is that a small development indy team made a management game without own GUI management. However they achieved again a total historical Kremlin like accuracy, because playing Ostalgie perfectly mirrors living behind the Iron Curtain: it is stressful, bleak, visually depressing, and makes you want to escape to the West after twenty minutes. The user interface looks exactly like the control room of Chernobyl’s Reactor 4. It is a terrifying wall of gray buttons, flashing warning lights, and cryptic data columns that give you zero explanation Playing this game makes you realize exactly how a disaster happens under this kind of button layout. It just just doesnt explodes because of a bad test; but because of the exact systemic flaws Ostalgie forces you to play through. Ultimately, Ostalgie isnt a bad game - its a historically accurate simulation of a systemic panic attack. It shows you that when a government is entirely run via confusing, stress inducing spreadsheets and paranoia, only a matter of time before the core goes critical. Drifting a Wartburg on black ice with no winter tires, a broken steering rack, and a trunk full of stolen bricks is still a safer, more predictable, and infinitely more joyful experience in my oppinion. The strategy of the game is: as the leader of East Germany or Poland, you have no actual power. If you dont constantly kiss the boots of the Soviet leadership in Moscow and beg Gorbachev for rubles, your economy instantly implodes thats it. Have fu, set graphics to "good" 60FPS!

The LARP potential here is huge. HOI4 doesn't have a real cold war mod that actually works, so this is the next best thing, and it fits its niche very well. Example: in my last game I created Third Positionist Albania, assassinated Deng, supported Saddam, turned the PLA on the people probably 3-4 times, created my own military and economic pacts to replace the CMEA and Warsaw Pact, established Stalinist Romania & Mongolia, backed the Sigurimi so hard they became on par with the KGB and CIA, used the August Revolution as justification to carry out a cultural revolution locally and purge anyone who wasn't a trve shqip patriqt from the government, took in Mielke and Honecker as well as any other former socialist leaders once the east bloc fell, supported Milosevic, supported Gaddafi, supported the UCK, staged multiple terrorist attacks, and at the very end got invaded by NATO because I LARPed too hard. It's kino, anyone who says otherwise either isn't built for this kind of game or doesn't know how to play. This isn't even scratching the surface of the LARP that can be accomplished in this game either, you can do Irish Republican LARP, you can do German Nazbol LARP, and so, so much more. Genuinely cannot recommend this game enough to fellow polsim autists. It's peak, kino, grade A, the best.
У меня РЕАЛЬНО сгорело от этой игры))) Такого еще не было, так что + разработчикам.
I love the music. It is sad that small countries can only do so much compared to China or USSR,
This game carries on from 1989 to 1992 or longer if the player wants. One plays as either cuba or vietnam. So, you do not have a lot of influence in the world. All these games are quirky, but if one has lived through these times, it is clear tht an immense amount of research went into this game. Basically, one can choose to join the rest of the world with liberalism or fight a rearguard action of continuing socialism. So, the replayability comes by choosing which path to take.
Fun since you get to play as eternal juche leader with the DLC's. MANSE.
