OPUS: Prism Peak
Capture the moment - then learn to let go.
Preclaimer
- I have played the previous game in the OPUS "series", Echo of Starsong, and can safely say there is no connection between the two other than easter egg cameos. This game can be fully enjoyed on its own.

Gameplay
The harder I try, the more people around me get hurt. OPUS: Prism Peak is a story-driven walking simulator in which you take photos with your trusty, old-time-y camera. What sounds simple and possibly even boring on the onset, however, quickly unfolds into an emotional rollercoaster of melancholy and serenity. Following it's main theme of "capturing the moment, then learning to let go" you get to take pictures of everything and anything. Quite often surprised at just how many miniscule details are classified as some important memory that gets stored in your "key moments" album. All the while you never know which of these memories will actually be important later on when some of the spirits that you meet throughout the game will want to see a specific picture to progress their sub-plot. As you are trying to "truly see them" or rather, truly uncover which person in protagonist Eugene's life they represent and what connection the two of them share. Depending on your performance with befriending the spirits, taking good pictures of important moments and choosing the right dialog choices (requiring you to actually pay attention to the characters relationships) defines your path through this spiritual realm and the ending you achieve; the perfect recipe for FOMO paranoia but worry not: there is a very convenient NG+ feature allowing you to quickly catch up on things you missed. On top of making you learn the true selfs of the characters you meet, the game also makes you learn it's rune-based language as key names are written solely in runes. A fun little challenge (you unlock letter-to-rune mappings as you proceed) adding even more replay-value as your second playthrough could shine much more light on things you were simply not able to understand, linguistically, before. And when you get a moment's respite from the emotional trauma, as a game about taking pictures it naturally features very beautiful scenes and an equally as impressive soundtrack to enjoy.

Content & Runtime
You're brave. Grown-ups are always brave. Once upon a time, over thirty years ago, there were a child and their grandfather. Living peacefully in the mountainside, passing down the tradition of photography and some religious story about the god [redacted] and their story of how the world came to be. Now, thirty plus years later, Eugene has grown up to the respectable age of 40 - and is looking back on a horrible life full of loss. He lost his home, his friends, his wife and his job. Currently on the way to the funeral of his grandfather he is distracted by talking to his grumpy, disappointed father on the phone while driving - and promptly gets into a car crash. When he comes back to his senses, he finds himself in a strange realm; familiar yet unknown locations, statues and stories strewn about and animal spirits mostly faded away roaming these places. There he also meets a lost little girl with no memories and together the two of them try to find a way back to their respective homes. Though if they will still be the same when they reach it, that is a different question. OPUS: Prism Peak is a multi-facetted emotional story about life, loss and all the things we lose to the passage of time. Focusing on our protagonist Eugene and his "life that went to ♥♥♥♥" we unravel the deeper meaning behind things and how no tragedy is solely one person's fault, nor simply fate. With some supernatural elements strewn across for cinematic effect (in a good, successful way) we revisit the true story of Eugene's life and maybe, just maybe, learn a thing or two about how he could live his life better were he given a second chance. With three major endings and 20 smaller ones (which I think are individual bad endings where you fail to get to the end of the journey) there is plenty to explore; although the major endings are not necessarily mutually exclusive. There is a normal, a true ending and what I can only expect to be the 100% completion ending. Sadly there still does not seem to be any reliable routing information yet and I only finished my first playthrough so far so I cannot give more detail on this. As mentioned before, the ending you achieve is determined by how well you get to "truly see" the characters you meet on your journey; requiring taking pictures of important memories, saying the right things and drawing the correct conclusions - most of which are optional and missable. My first playthrough - trying to be thorough and getting lost a couple times - took about 15h to get the true ending with me seemingly still missing plenty on the way to 100% (story completion, not achievements) so I'd reasonably estimate that you can expect to get a good 20-30h out of this game.

Conclusion
Is this game worth it? Just like the previous OPUS game this is a solid recommendation - especially since it seems to have been rather overlooked in the grand scheme of things. It is worth the full price but if you want to pick it up on a sale so you can grab the soundtrack too that is a perfectly fine investment aswell. If you played the previous game (Echo of Starsong) the kind of storytelling is somewhat different but the experience hits all the same in the end. If you are new to OPUS but like deep stories with meaning and "close to home" real themes and feelings, this is a very nice example of those. And hey, there will always be another Steam sale! A heartfelt journey with a great deal of empathy and curiosity. Less of a game, more an experience, but still quite worthwhile
Very good walking sim with a few more gameplay mechanics than other games in the genre. Weight down by mediocre voice direction in english, a few oddly translated / overly cryptic hints and stiff facial animations on a lot of the characters. DEFINETLY NOT FOR EVERYONE. There's a reason the protagonist is 40.
Prism Peak is exactly what I wanted from an OPUS game: a narrative experience that's mostly thoughtful, occasionally poignant, with a third-act cathartic burst of joy and hope, all held together by just enough gameplay to be recognizably a game without becoming a chore, and underscored by music that tells you exactly how to fell at any given moment. I played in "Comfort Mode" (which basically means all in-game hints enabled); I don't come to these games looking for a challenge. I enjoyed the experience. As a middle-aged dude, it gave me a few things to think about. A bit of a guilty sentimental pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless.
