🎮 One-Eyed Lee and the Dinner Party 🎮
Short for a stand-alone game but of appropriate length for one part of the four-part adventure it aspires to be, One-Eyed Lee and the Dinner Party is a fun, solid adventure from a first-time developer. Puzzles are sensible and fair, while operating on a system that's a little different from the standard LucasArts-inspired "Use X on Y" frame. Cute original art, fun characters, and a plot that drifts from comedic to spooky do a lot to recommend the game. Here's hoping we see parts 2 through 4.
I really love this game! Short version: + interesting, layered character + lasting consequences of your actions + environmental storytelling + compelling story + compelling setting + accessibility options + enjoyable music and art = very little exposition - firm sequence for actions - sometimes tricky skipping function First off, it's very strong in the characterization department. All the characters feel so distinct and layered, and it's fascinating to peel back those layers to find out the secrets of a very unfortunate story. Everyone is flawed and almost everyone is capable of cruelty in this game, but everyone is also strongly shaped by and entangled in the world around them and the circumstances they were thrown into. A speech Lee holds some time into the game about especially the agency of children in situations like here is especially moving to me, because despite the fantasy setting, that speech describes our real world so well, too. Also, absolutely watch Lee's expressions whenever you can. They're amazing. The artist sometimes had to try and express two or three different emotions in the same facial features and they did a great job! Depending on how you play the game, dynamics shift between certain characters, and that can at times be heartbreaking or even horrifying. The game definitely doesn't let you get away with trying to be a milquetoast goodie two shoes, trying to always preserve your white vest. Which was a very new experience to me, who typically tries to avoid even remotely mean dialogue options in game. I appreciate being nudged out of my comfort zone like that without the game making me a cruel murderer at the same time. The setting is also really cool to me! It's definitely in the direction of fantasy, but clearly rooted in a very unique vision of that? Instead of shapeless magic, this world seems strongly influenced by spirits of different kinds, which gives every supernatural phenomenon some personality to go with it. That is something the author is generally really good at, by the way - taking familiar genres and adding a unique spin to them! The only thing that can get a bit tedious on subsequent playthroughs, trying to find all endings, is that certain puzzles rely on things being done in a specific order. Meaning that at times I had to navigate back and forth around the house a lot to skip through the dialogue on certain triggers, even when I knew the final answer to a puzzle already, just so I could access the point at which I could enter the answer. Basically, at times the character need to catch up to you in their knowledge, and that can feel a bit repetitive. But even that feels more like a trapping of the unusual and more natural style of this game - diagetic actions and events are more valued here than the ability to treat the game as a toy. And I appreciate that, even if it may make me mope a little bit as I click my way through "finding" a piece of information I long since know. All in all, I had a blast playing this! It kept my mind buzzing with theories and questions all the way through, making me happily search every nook, cranny and line of text for the answers, and filled my heart with compassion for the characters. Absolutely check it out!
On the positive side, the art style is cute and it doesn't cost a lot. Oh! And LGBTQ+ representation! Loved that part. But on the negative side... oh dear. There really isn't much to do. You could finish this game in a few minutes. Storywise the game hints at a lot, but doesn't actually deliver any of it. Look, if the dialogue was really funny, then maybe it wouldn't matter. But the dialogue is ... not great. Without spoiling anything: The ending is boring, requires basically no thought whatsoever and is tedious. I would have been unsure how I feel about the game if not for the ending/endings. The way those play out (what you need to do. How you need to do it.) was what really made me write this review. Please don't buy this. It will only bring you disappointment.
Really nice game, enjoyed the writing and the characters and the art is so good! A nice little puzzle game, would recommend.
The game is just a master piece. The artstyle ist grogerous and beautiful. A game where you actually feel like you understand the puzzles and can solve them without the hours of brain melting processes. Can't even find one thing I don't like. It's very well made and I hope that more people find this game as amazing and beautiful as I do so I can find more fanarta about it. I hope there's more or even a part two where we can finally find out what's going on about the thing that possessed the village and Lee. I personally am pretty excited about everything.
Good quick little adventure game with good writing and a fantastic and unique art style. Absolutely worth the price and Im interested to see where the story goes from here, hopefully it will be continued somewhere in the near future!
I have to start off by saying play the One Eyed Lee Prologue on itch.io, I did that before playing this and found myself really benefiting from knowing the extra bits of lore. I appreciate the little touches like the interface using wheat and knowing little things about Lee going in that adds to his mystery. Well, I can't recommend this and the prologue enough, they're both excellent. DarkChibiShadow have something truly inspired here and I really want to see where this series goes next. The art looks great and these characters are extremely well thought out, the relationship between Beracus and Lee is truly interesting and the way the player is just plopped right in the middle of their story works extremely well. It makes us much more eager to learn about them through the game itself and I found myself reading all the notes no matter what because I didn't want to miss out on potential clues to their backstories, which works for its point-n-click aspect since the notes in the journal will give you clues. I only just finished my first playthrough, got the true ending and plan to play it again to get all the endings, but I can safely say this is a game that demands more attention, especially if you've played through the prologue as well as this and know that after it's ending that this game series is going somewhere special. Really, I can't stress that enough, once I got to the end and saw what this game was doing with the added knowledge of the prologue I was like "...Oh snap, this is going to get interesting." so PLEASE show this love and give it a chance, this is not your typical visual novel. It got released on consoles last year so that's good, the next one's probably still in the works. I really really REALLY want to see the next one! Beracus and Lee are a great duo and Lee's condition is endlessly fascinating to me, especially if it's going where I think it's going.
This game, by wonderful indie developer DCS, is a stunning artistic take of an escape room game. The direction the game took was great, the characters within the story are extremely well rounded (and those who aren't have a reason for this), and the end fight is so fun to figure out new ways to get through! I love this game, the creator, and the music by the brilliant NomNomNami. Amazing game, please consider giving this a shot!
I love this artist and I love this game! Definitely instills a sense of creepiness as you go along. I can't wait for the next chapter!
