Well-crafted characters and story, combined with hand-drawn art and unique ways to interact, Omurice Next Time is truly a hidden gem and a breath of fresh air.
Small Story, Deeply Meaningful
Unlike how gay men are presented in mass media, the characters in Omurice Next Time are working-class men. Finn and Gray obviously struggle Financially, Wilbur and Akashi work hard to run their general store. Life wasn't easy, but you know what, put all this aside, all that matters is we have each other. Even in the darkest moments, we can still find strength from friends, family, and loved ones. For ordinary people like you and me, this is our story. And our story deserves to be told.
The Devil is in the Details
The way Omurice Next Time presents details is subtle and exquisite. Similar to mom always pack an extra snack in my lunchbox. I wasn't sure that
Momo could be the mastermind behind all the underwear disappearing events
until I re-read Momo's chapter. And
I highly suspect Finn could be his partner in crime
! Ha! Later in the story, I learned
Gray is actually from Hawaii and he is an orphan
,
Wilbur is clumsy when it comes to gaming
, and
It is not the first time Finn tries to grow facial hair
. The characters are so alive, and the story just seems real.
Beautiful and Heartwarming
A story is only good as long as it is well-presented, and the Omurice Next Time has done it beautifully. You will be amazed how cute the art style is, it reminds me a lot of the classic 90s anime I watched in my childhood. Watching the Finn and Gray live their life and enjoy their small happiness brings real healing power. Hopefully one day, I could live in a small town like Windreach, surrounded by those I care about. Nothing fancy is needed, life is just life. Omurice Next Time will be cherished in my heart for as long as I can remember.
A very sweet narrative game which follows a year in the life of a gay couple (and friends!) The characters are very sweet, and the everyday activities, from spending time with friends to checking your balance sheet, help you get to know them over time. The game has lots of charm, with plenty of little text snippets and animations that happen when you click on things. As the title might suggest, plenty of chapters involve eating or making food, which I really enjoyed! It's the kind of game that can brighten up an evening/weekend.
This is a wonderful and relaxing game. The stories are quite cozy and the characters are very pleasant.Everything in this game relaxes and gives warmth, just peace-warmth-slow gameplay with a cute story! I do not regret buying this game and wish the devs all the best.
Omurice Next Time is a decent enough slice of life visual novel about life, comfort, and love. It’s also unapologetically gay. The overall art style is pretty adorable and pages are usually laid out in interesting ways. My only significant complaint, is the lack of instruction. Often I was left waiting and clicking unsure if there was more dialogue. I wish there was a more obvious cue when it’s safe to turn to the next page.
Omurice Next Time is a comfortable slice-of-life experience about the routine of a gay couple. They're cute together and desire only one thing: to enjoy life with one another. The experience is comfortable all-around and the ultrasoft art style complements the concept well. There are some writing errors in English, but nothing major overall.
Premise This review reflects my personal experience with the game. That detail alone immediately separates it from most romance VNs. The story is not about chasing someone, building toward confession scenes, or dramatic misunderstandings every few hours. Instead, it focuses on what happens after all of that. Most of the game is built around ordinary life: cooking together, small conversations at home, awkward moments, shared routines and a level of affection that feels lived-in rather than idealised. That is honestly what makes the writing stand out so much; it understands that intimacy is often found in very small things. The game also feels deeply personal. You can tell these characters were written with genuine care behind them, especially knowing the story was inspired by the creator’s own relationship. Nothing here feels manufactured for drama. Even the humour has a softness to it. What surprised me most is how believable Finn and Gray feel together. They interrupt each other naturally, tease one another casually and move through conversations like people who have genuinely spent years together. After playing a lot of VNs where relationships escalate almost immediately, Omurice Next Time felt refreshingly patient. In a way, this is the type of relationship that many gay men wish to experience. Representation — ★★★★★ This is one of the few M/M games I have played where the relationship already exists before the story begins. Finn and Gray are not treated as fantasy archetypes or routes waiting to be unlocked. They feel like two people sharing a life together. The game is also unapologetically queer in a very warm and confident way; one of the Steam descriptions literally calls it “Relentlessly Gay,” which honestly fits perfectly. Gameplay — ★★★★☆ This is more of an interactive storybook than a traditional VN. You tap, drag, interact with objects, uncover small details and occasionally solve light achievement-related interactions hidden throughout the story. It is simple, but it matches the slower pace of the game well. That said, if you are looking for branching routes, heavy gameplay systems or major player choice, this is not really that kind of experience. The focus sits almost entirely on the game's atmosphere and writing. There are also hidden achievements and smaller interactive moments that completionists will probably enjoy more than casual players (make sure to click over all those stickers!). Art & Direction — ★★★★★ The hand-drawn artwork is gorgeous. Everything has this warm, soft presentation that perfectly matches the tone of the writing. Food is illustrated with so much care that the game will genuinely make you hungry at times. The apartment itself slowly starts feeling familiar too, almost like you have been living there alongside Finn and Gray. The soundtrack deserves a lot of praise as well. It stays subtle throughout most scenes, but it helps create that relaxed, almost nostalgic atmosphere the game constantly leans into. Do I recommend it? — ★★★★★ Absolutely. Omurice Next Time is not trying to overwhelm you with plot twists or huge emotional breakdowns. The game simply asks you to spend time with two people who love each other and somehow that becomes incredibly difficult to leave behind once it ends. I think this game will resonate most with players who enjoy slower, character-driven stories and relationships that feel believable rather than exaggerated. There is something deeply comforting about its world. Honestly, it feels less like playing a VN and more like being invited briefly into someone else’s life.
