1 NOV 22: As it currently stands, I would _NOT_ recommend this game unless you enjoy supporting the development of survival type games. A few of the disappointments are as follows: While there are settings for such, there is no music and very little in the way of sounds (it's a shame, too, what with all the sites out there that you can purchase the rights to sounds or music for relatively little money). There is no tutorial, other than a few 'post-it-notes' that you must find. These notes actually take away any hope of immersion as they are white text on a blue background making them look more like dev notes than any sort of guidance. The loot tables are far too randomized in that you start a game with a sawed-off shotgun and about 50 shells but every scrap of ammunition you find is for some other type of gun. After nearly three hours of combing the (rather sparse) map, not one shotgun shell was found, nor any other type of weapon, but 7 different sizes of ammunition in 2-4 flavors apiece. "Break them down and make shotgun shells", you say... Well, the ammunition is yet to be 'recyclable', so that's a 'no-can-do', at least not yet. Enemies are about the only thing that is not scarce. They usually come in pairs, occasionally in trios, and each one takes between 5 and 8 rounds (shotgun) to kill, This makes your 50 starting shells last thru 5 encounters MAX (if you don't miss or use another 5-8 to kill a large field mouse for 2 meat that only give you about 10% on your hunger bar). They also respawn - and without any sounds, it is very easy to get ambushed while you are working on something else - like your tan, since there isn't a lot more to do in the game (yet). On the other hand, the scenery is great, even if you can not interact with very many things yet. I can definitely see the potential that this game can have, but it may take quite some time for it to get to even a mediocre-plus level. TO THE DEVELOPER: Take a few of the bucks you get from these purchases, buy yourself a subscription to Artlist and get some music for life! Might try to find a decent site for sound bytes as well, or buy a sound package off of Humble Bundle... I know coming up with a game from scratch is a long and frustrating process, but releasing (even 'early access') a product with very little actual content only results in reviews like this. I will be keeping my eye on this title, and not requesting a refund as I have done in the past, because I do believe this can be a great game, in (at least) a few more updates.
I like the direction this game is going. Yes, it is very alpha early access. However, the one guy creating this game {yep just one guy} is a great person and loves feedback. There is no ego, The Developer has a passion for his game and you can tell from what he has created so far, and how he interacts with those on discussion forums. I'm excited how on what becomes of this Hidden gem of a game.
The game is early access, when first released and most reviews were posted (as some do seem to like to review and be the first to post and also act like 5 year old clowns in the process), it was very early on day one and as most who reviewed it then haven't altered their reviews, is the reason why it's mixed reviews imo. the developer is a single person and freely admits it's his first attempt on a new gaming engine and type of game he is designing and is learning as he progresses, he posts updates and right from the start posted information on what was going to be added in his plan before releasing from EA, and clearly posted for everyone to see, so anyone who posts a negative review without taking into account any of these statements, either don't like the type of game on offer, or can't read, or are under age and just like to moan alot, or maybe all of above when buying with mummy & daddies money. so as the game isn't finished, i can't review it, but are supporting it by testing it and giving feedback, as per the EA statement of support Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access? “The work on the game started in January 2021 and will remain in Early Access up to mid-2023.” if you don't like the long road and journey, then plain and simple don't jump onboard, by all means buy it and keep loading it up and seeing if you think it's worth a quick half an hour every now and then if you want, your choice to support or not and give or don't give feedback on progress or your opinion on which or what could be made better or bugs found etc, but to moan just for the sake because you can, makes me wonder why steam doesn't make you prove how old you are, as aged 55 myself, most reviewers seems to be kids with a axe to grind and maybe better off on a xbox or outside on there electric scooters playing and having fun with other kids on the streets.
This is what I call an A.R.S.M. (Not an ASMR, but an ARSM)... ARSM stands for Asset Reliant Sloppy Mess. It's just this asset kit from the Unreal Marketplace as 95% of his game with a few random other assets cobbled into it: https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/en-US/product/survival-game-kit-v2 This game is really nothing but a big empty desert map (also an asset the developer didn't make) and a handful of random enemy assets thrown in that all have terrible A.I. that just stands there and let you shoot or chop them to death with an axe. This is all clearly demonstrated in the video seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3e_rOz6bVc The positive reviews are all super suspect as paid positive reviews as well, and that's just based on my ten years experience reviewing these indie games and asset flips here on Steam. I only state this because I feel this is important to understand before you spend your time and/or money on this asset cobbled together mess of a "game" In the end, it's your money and your time. I'm just posting my review here to try and save potential purchasers of what they can expect if they support this indie dev and his asset flip mess here. MY SCORE: A Big Red Asset ZERO downloaded directly from Google. But I am not asking $18.99 USD for this review. =) NOT RECOMMENDED. I recommend instead that you save your time, your 15 GB of hard drive space and your money.
OLD FUTURE: POST-APOCALYPTIC TIMES a grim harsh game world of untold brutality where trying to survive and find happiness where a now almost extinct civilization which thrived on joyful comforts is nigh impossible yet hope beckons with the promise of salvage and a scavengers heart. The game still has a long way to go but slowly and surely it is getting there as the one man Dev team is passionately working on it as he has his wargaming masterpiece FRONTLINE series. So this guy knows how to code to bring the results on every level. He is also very open to constructive criticism never insulted by it or seeing it as a negative but a plus which can only further guide his wondrous creation to life and completeness. A work ethic he has shown on the wargames he has created as many a time people would mention a bug and right away it was taken care of in a day or two if not sooner. The game needs further balancing and from what i have seen in my last play session much more tweaking on things like hit boxes as the damage done to enemies seems too extreme in either direction where one time a flying insect will die on one hit but on other times it will take close to ten shotgun rounds at close range to take one down though each shot seems to hit as the graphics for blood show up. This occurred on the first CANYON map. There are also other things which could be balanced or changed such as seeing paper money stacks all over the desert floor which seems a bit unrealistic. Maybe replace them with some sort of resource perhaps something that was created as an aftereffect of the war which transformed certain aspects of the landscape to a resource which did not exist before that is now of use in this devastated world and may even help to save it in the long run thus worth collecting to sell and or use. Music is now in the game and it sounds fantastic! Reminds me of the incredible music from the Netflix series STRANGER THINGS which gives off a sense of exploration and discovery in a magical world of nightmares and miracles. Sound effects are also getting there though still sparse in my last play session i found myself terrified when hearing the buzzing sound of the flying insects. Fortunately one can hear them from a decent enough distance but they are fast and lethal. This is one of the aspects i like as it gives one barely enough time to draw their shotgun while putting out a mindset of preparation as you better have that shotgun already loaded with ammo if you want to stand a good chance against the flying horrors. World design while still not fully fleshed out already has a very strong end of the world yet holding on character to it reminding me alot of what Bethesda's FALLOUT series may have looked like during development. I can only hope if development allows that there will eventually be a radio implemented with some cool old world music whatever that might be in this game world's reality. Crafting is one of the more developed systems in the game where you can create campfires and do things like cook food after collecting the needed resources such as wood by chopping it from trees. Loot i believe can be toned down as it seems a bit too plentiful at the moment for what the game's subject matter is. The first map feels more like a huge outside supply vault instead of a devastated landscape and on the same map i met a trader who could easily supply all this to your character while having natural resources or loot from dead enemies as something to pick up on ones travels to use or sell. For those who want to support the development of OLD FUTURE: POST-APOCALYPTIC TIMES i would say go ahead and buy it as am a hundred percent confident the Dev shall deliver and then some but it will take time. For everyone else wishlist and keep an eye on the game's development til you feel satisfied the time has come to purchase it for your gaming pleasure. All the best to a great Dev and awesome person who has always been a friendly and positive if not inspiring voice in our conversations.
This game shows much promise. Yes there are issues to iron out but it is clearly a labour of love and gets better every update and patch. The Dev works really hard and responds well to feedback, so if you enjoy a crafting/collecting post apocalypse game with nice maps and want to watch a game develop as you play, this game is very much worth a go. It will only get better.
great game so far keep up the good work. it's nice to see a developer so involved with his game and his community.
Game is just trash. Combat mechanics are absolute garbage. Graphics are sub standard. Game as a whole just feels like poorly made. Movement, interactions, combat, all janky as hell. I've revisited this a few times now & it never improves. Game is just poor & I've a strong feeling that is where it will stay. Will not be revisiting again ever
In this state, No. This feels...very early access. Pre-Alpha maybe. Running on a 3080 and i7 with 32gb ram things are phasing in and out of existence...I thought "maybe it's just loading in" but they'd load in and then disappear again. I'm seeing health bars miles away from enemies in some cases. some enemies don't seem to have a max distance they'll pursue you. it's big fairly empty maps, I was disappointed to find withing the first few minute there were inaccessible buildings and you'll certainly run out your refund timer before finding something. This is very much a rust "clone", that's not bad but if it's in this state maybe it is. They seems to still be doing work on it but I wonder whether it was a good idea to make it purchasable through steam in the current state. given the type of game I always get this sense of skepticism, you're meant to run around and not get the full experience for a while but if it's in this early a stage games like this can trick you into playing past the refund window, DayZ standalone is such a half arsed piece of garbage and it tricks players into thinking there's more up until you're firmly past the refund window (in DayZ there is more...with MODS and only with mods) from what I can tell so far the world building is competent if a little derivative (think wasteland 2 and Rust). they already have 2 maps but the one definitely needs more work. I truly think this could be something cool, although like I said more of an alternative than a replacement or competitor to Rust, but if the second map is an indication of the rest of the product it should not be for sale yet.
