Okunoka Madness

Gameplay
Okunoka Madness is a tough as nails platformer where you go through various stages trying to get from point A to point B. The basic gameplay is pretty simple and I am sure all gamers have played this sort of game once in their life. The first few stages of the game gives you a glimpse into the control scheme and the basic template and after those few levels, the difficulty spikes up venomously (you’ll understand the pun when you reach the stage). As you go through stages, you gain power ups such as one which allows you to control ice and you can use it to freeze and unfreeze specific platforms on command, similar for fire platforms later on. But don’t be fooled, everything that is given to you will be used against you in this game. Every powerup means there will be new and more difficult challenges which will require you to have extreme precision over your controls. Speaking of controls, I am extremely happy to report that the controls are super tight. I get frustrated normally in these games when the characters are a little extra slippery or when they don’t take inputs in between. No such case here, absolutely tight controls mean you’ll only have yourself to blame for the deaths and you’ll die a lot. But considering the length of each stage is on the shorter side, the deaths don’t feel as frustrating as they would if the stage size was larger. On a side note, this game seems to be custom built to be played by a controller. Due to some issues in lockdown, I did not have my controller when I previewed this game and that showed. While you can work with a keyboard, I recommend a controller for the best experience.
Visuals
I am sucker for colourful bright games and Okunoka Madness delivers that in loads. The stages are filled with colours, even the drabber levels are more colorful than most. The obstacles also are impeccably designed for being a visual treat and the creatures that loom in the background are fascinating to say the least. Even better designed are the bosses and the protagonist itself. Even the deaths are surprisingly beautiful, instead of dying gorily like you would in a game of this nature, your body disintegrates into little crystals and rejoin at the start point. This makes even death very pretty to look at. Such a surprisingly beautiful game that even though it is designed to frustrate, I couldn’t help but come back to it over and over again.
Sound
The sound design of Okunoka Madness is very good, that is to say, it compliments very well the visuals and creates a sense of peace. There is such harmony in such a brutal game that you can’t help but appreciate the sound design even more.
Overall
I’ll keep it short here, I recommend Okunoka Madness whole heartedly. If you have even the least Bit of interest in a game of this genre, you should check out Okunoka Madness when it releases. Impeccable level design, tight controls and some heartwarming visuals makes it one of the easiest recommends I can give.
Follow our curator for similar games
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35180752-3-point-play/ Precision platformer + challenging + quirky = Achievement acquired, dying from spikes. Great start! The mechanics are fun, but nothing new. 100+ levels, speedruns and leaderboards.
I cannot recommend this game. Being a Super Meat boy clone is fine and all, (this is pretty much a 1:1 carbon copy of Super Meat boy, Warp zones, collect pink eye ball things in place of bandages, even the first 5 stages so far are an exact copy of all the orignal Super Meat Boy stages....) But the controls, just feel not right, like its too sensitive when you are falling down, but at the same time, like trying to maneuver through jelly. It just feels so off. its not a good feeling. It just does not feel tight and snappy and responsive. I would like to continue but man, i just cant. The weird feeling of the controls just kills it for me. I like the game and, im all more super meat boy games /shrug
OkunoKA Madness is yet another of literally thousands of 2D retro platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. It's a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. PC gamers will be insulted by the presence of console peasant children's toy controller prompts, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? OkunoKA Madness has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of around $9 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $9 asking price for this game could get you games like "This War of Mine", "Frostpunk" or "Euro Truck Simulator 2". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
If you like a challenge, or just general platform games, you need to play this game! It's tough, but rewarding when you finally get to the finish line... or soul in this case. Better yet, if you can compete on the leaderboards and get those sweet times!
If you like Games like Super Meat Boy then this game is for you! The graphics is awesome and the gameplay with the change of powers is fresh!
Nice hardcore platformer, very fast-paced, and with very responsive inputs.Might look easy at start but after a bit, you are in for a treat.I liked the boss fights a lot.
Colonna sonora e stile grafico veramente ben fatti.
