Rotund Rebound is an extremely high quality passion project about a bunch of fat, cute animals bouncing (platforming) around through a large super mario brothers-esque world of various levels. It's super fun, cute and evident that the devs put a LOT of love into this game. Highly recommended.
Reviewing this before finishing because it deserves it. Absolutely wonderful platformer with a unique always bouncing movement system. Excellent gameplay, excellent visuals, great soundtrack and it's tough as nails. Plays like a charm and the fact that it's gone so unnoticed is such a huge shame.
Quick Score: 5/5 Notes: One of the most polished and underrated games on steam. Could not recommend the game enough. If you are someone who generally enjoys platformers and prefers them more on the challenging side, this is the game for you. A barebones playthrough of the game would take maybe 3-5 hours depending on your skill level. However, 100%ing this game AKA beating all developer times and obtaining all flag medals, will push you easily to 100+ hours of playtime (depending on if you route the levels yourself). Really not anything bad I can say about the game. Just pick it up and play it, you will not regret it. And while you are at it, feel free to check out the other games in the franchise.
This is one of those demanding platforms kind of in the vein of Super Meat Boy or VVVVVV, but in this one, you play a chubby rabbit named Chubbit, and there's no jump button -- instead, you mostly move just left and right and touch tiles that bounce you in different directions and speeds depending on the type of tile. You use this to move through the levels and avoid enemies and spikes, collect leaves, and rescue your animal friends who were captured by an evil poison carrot or something. Each level has three different types of medal you can get based on your performance (though I'm not entirely certain what each one represents). There's also an overworld map with branching paths and areas that are locked off until you get enough medals, as well as boss fights and minigames. I've only played about an hour and a half of this so far, and got a few levels into world 2. To be honest, I'm not really the intended target audience for this type of game. I don't have the dexterity to be good at it or the patience to bang my head against it over and over until I get better. (I had to look up a video on YouTube to find out how to get past the tutorial.) That being said, I'm still enjoying it pretty well. There are some concessions made for people like me, such as an optional bat character who can support you by allowing you to take several hits instead of dying instantly, and the ability to unlock checkpoints part of the way through the levels. They're still challenging, but possible. And you can choose to use these helpers or not on a per-level basis. If you want the full challenge you can just ignore them. The controls are tight and the graphics are cute, and the music is great. There are also built-in timers for speedrunning and the game keeps track of a lot of different stats for you. There are unlockable alternate characters and color palettes, and probably other stuff that I haven't seen because I haven't gotten that far. Overall, it's a well-made game and I'm enjoying it. I think people who are more into this genre would probably get more out of it than me, so if you're one of those I'd definitely recommend it, and if not, I still think it's worth checking out.
Back and better than before
This game should have gotten more attention than it did, solid platformer with really good art and music
Rotund Rebound is the culmination of Dahku's Rotund Game Series trilogy, and it's proven itself to be one of the best 2D platformers I've ever played. I've been a fan of this series back when it was just one game called Chubbins for the Wii U (remade for Steam/Switch as Rotund Takeoff), and since its announcement in 2018 I was eagerly anticipating Rotund Rebound's release. And it delivers in every single aspect! The basic concept is that you're always bouncing, and you must make your way through many challenging levels, preferably in a quick amount of time. This game exceeded my expectations in its scope and mechanics. Rotund Takeoff has a good amount of gameplay ideas, but Rebound expands with a lot of new ideas being introduced. Four new enemy types, sideways blocks, new powerups that alter how you play through the levels, six playable characters that have subtle, unique abilities, optional minigames you can play on the side, three different methods of playing through the levels that act as an easy/normal/hard difficulty modifier... But the most interesting new ideas actually come from the level designs themselves. The new mechanics help elevate a lot of these levels, but the design of these levels is more complex and creative than the already well-designed levels that Takeoff has to offer. Dahku really makes the most of all the gameplay elements at their disposal. The difficulty of the levels in Rebound is a lot higher than Takeoff; it's never unfair, but there's quite a few levels (even early on) that will likely be brutal on your first playthrough. There are also several boss battles, which can get insanely hard towards the end but are still fun and creative nonetheless. The controls and gamefeel are basically perfect, though if you ask me I'd recommend using a keyboard for this game. It's certainly beatable with a controller, but I find the keyboard makes it easier to control for more precise movements. Every level feels unique, and this is further exemplified by every single level having a unique background. The artstyle is more on the simple side, but the graphics are all very detailed. The backdrops of each level look great, and there's more variety in locations than one might expect, even in worlds with a simpler theme like the grass and snow worlds. The characters look great, too; they're distinct and charming, and even have their own character bios if you're willing to look for them. The soundtrack is excellent. I have a soft spot for Takeoff's slower and more atmospheric approach, but the energetic retro style fits Rebound just as well. The world map and boss music are nice re-imaginings of the songs from Rotund Takeoff, and the stage themes have a nice variety and all carry a different sort of mood despite mostly being upbeat. The sound design is also good. Not much else to say about it, the sound effects just sound good and are implemented well. I feel like I've mainly just been listing features of the game, but I really love this game. It's an excellent speed game (hopefully some speedrunners will pick this up at some point!), but it's also a great game to play through at your own pace, if you're willing to put your skills to the test. Just a wonderful journey of a game from start to finish, and the focus on time attack and high skill ceiling gives this game excellent replay value. I fully recommend Rotund Rebound if you like challenging 2D platformers like Celeste, Pizza Tower, VVVVVV, classic 2D Mario titles... It certainly plays differently from those games I just listed, but is still just as excellent in every way.
Insanely good game. One of the real HIDDEN Gems of steam. Don't Let this go into obscurity. Hope the developer, keeps making games, all of the ingredients of a masterpiece are here!
