Pretty but I wish the controls and gameplay were more fluid.
Fantastic mix of arcade side scroller and fighting game style attack inputs. Incredibly satisfying and challenging. Highly recommended!
Imagine if Super Mario and Street Fighter 2 had a speed running baby in the eighties. That grew up watching too many Canon movies. That's Okinawa Rush! Nine different endings, more difficulty levels than you can count, more violence than you can stand, shorter one-liners than you can take, and not enough bugs to not recommend it! Now buy this hidden gem, you maggot!!!
Very cool concept and content, would love to love it ... but the controls and movement are super janky and loose. A game like this needs to be super tights with controls. I love (and completed) The Messanger, Infernax and a lot of other retro inspired games that are as good if not better than what the inspiration was ... but sadly this is not one of them for me. I wish it was.
While a bit of jank and a steep learning curve may make some players bounce off it, I think sticking with it rewards you with one of the most unique ahd fun 2D combat systems ever made. Absolutely worth it.
PROS
• Very simple and accessable controls • Nice, badass variety of brutal fantasy martial arts • Three actors to choose from with martial specialization • Nice and cliche story mode with fantastic art, music, and retro style
CONS
• Arcade mode has the Black Belt time limit • Story mode has some bloated and odd features • Combat breaks down in overpop'd, cramped quarters • Survival mode is contained in a small, roofed, one-room dojo
Ya, that's my bicep.
Don't know about you, but I can't get enough games that leech off the culture of the 80s, nor the satirical, purposeful overdrive we put on it. In a nutshell, Okinawa Rush puts you in a revenge power fantasy of ki, karate, and Kung Fu. You overcome all obstacles with your mind and body, and you rescue, heal, and occassionally talk to people along the way. The combat is a nice amalgamation of simple platformers, 2-button mashers, more complex brawlers like Streets of Rage, and fighting games; very specifically Street Fighter and MvC. It achieves this with d-pad movement, 3 buttons, contextual input, and combination inputs. As many attacks are based on Street Fighter, they are simple and universal. There's literally dragon punches and hadokens (sadly no hurricane kick)! The contextual controls mostly consist of parries and counters. You can do both at once by timing anything but the basic punch against an enemy's attack. Lastly, there is grappling which has a unique attack for each actor and a number of throws. For your convenience, I've listed all hidden moves in the last header. In Arcade and Story modes, gameplay beyond combat checks all the retro coin-op boxes. Killing enemies and obtaining secrets gives treasure for points which adds to your level score. There's dozens of small, open and/or semi-secret caches in every level in addition to events and a number of carefully hidden grottos and full on forbidden vaults. There's unnamed minibosses and a major boss in every level and you are rated on how you engage them.
Survival. Survival? Again?!
Uh, guys? I'm not so sure if this is—uh—structurally speaking—such a good time for your buddies to drop in! While a lot of games in similar genres in the past five years have made an overcomplicated survival mode, the dojo is very simple, non-randomized, and quite difficult to ace. However, it has a couple very fatal flaws. Since the dojo features a low ceiling, it's somewhat difficult to do effective dragon punches, and no enemies can spawn from above to let you take full advantage of this beautiful attack. The other is spam. The room is filled wall-to-wall with ninjas by wave 5. While in close proximity to enemies you can't perform most special attacks that require horizontal input. You can only punch, jump, parry, or counter. When enemies occupy all available space, the combat degrades into quick-time 'fighting' if you decide to stay grounded because either you counter or you get knocked around like a ragdoll. If you jump, you rapidly ping-pong enemies to death with a poorly animated jump kick. Granted, these moments don't last very long because all it takes is one good counter to nearly destroy an entire room. However, if enemies keep coming, then you can effectively get locked in a loop of counters, parries, and grapples. In either case, it feels absolutely dreadful.
CONCLUSION
Great content at a great value! Unlike most of the recent brawlers out there, this one has a 10/10 campaign. However, I'm quite disappointed by the limitations in close quarters and the Survival dojo. In return for a meager amount of extra development, they could have boosted this game's value immensely. I'm not sure what to rate the other content because I'm not very interested in it. Arcade mode is just Story mode without the additional 'out-of-game' nonsense.
Hidden Moves
🔴 = Attack 🟢 = Jump 🟡 = Special (or 🔴+🟢) Universal • Reverse Rising Kick (Back + 🟡) Lengthy jump and much stronger than a 🔴 reverse kick. Ragdolls enemies and reflects projectiles. • Dash = (⬇ + 🟢) Not really a hidden move, but it's usefulness against crowds is quite understated. It's also the only way to move over caltrops without jumping. Hiro • Zanku Hadoken (⬇ ➡ + 🟡 [while airborne]) Hadoken, but midair! Note, directional is a quarter circle, not just down, forward. • Dragon Punch (⬇ ⬆ + 🟡) The Street Fighter thing! Delivers huge damage, grants i-frames, and costs nothing. Can't be effectively used under a low ceiling. • Headbutt Carnival (🟡 [during Headbutt]) Throw three additional Headbutts that devastate crowds. • Tombstone Piledriver (Grab ⬇ ⬇ + 🔴 [🟢 + ⬅ or ➡ during Piledrive to add distance]) Leap and slam enemy on their head. Performs the most damage possible for a non-special and is extremely good against crowds! Shin • Zanku Hadoken (⬇ ➡ + 🟡 [while airborne]) Hadoken, but midair! Note, directional is a quarter circle, not just down, forward. • Dragon Punch (⬇ ⬆ + 🟡) The Street Fighter thing! Delivers huge damage, grants i-frames, and costs nothing. Can't be effectively used under a low ceiling. Tiger Driver '91 (Grab ⬇ ⬇ + 🔴) Slam enemy on the their head. Not as strong as Shiro's Piledriver, but has a big shockwave. Mei-Lin • Fan Throw (⬇ ➡ + 🟡 [while airborne]) Fan Throw, but midair! Note, directional is a quarter circle, not just down, forward. • Spinning Fan Kick (⬇ ⬆ + 🟡) Another Street Fighter thing! If you continue holding ⬆ and 🟡, she will repeat the kick. Let go after the second kick or you will spend health and Rage. • Scorpion Death Kick (Grab ⬇ ⬇ + 🔴 [enemy < 50% HP]) If the condition is met, violently fragments victim and anything nearby. Probably the most efficient crowd control attack in the game.
So far this game has been really rad. Easy to learn, difficult to master. The items, story, training mini games all of it is super refreshing. My only criticism is that the controls feel floaty. I love the characters can jump super high and gain momentum. I just wish they felt like they had a little more weight. All in all though. Really great hack and slash platformer.
awesome, highly recommend, one of my favorite games
