A fun RPG with good stories and characters (well, some better written than others), but held back IMO by some really inexplicable design choices which detract from the experience. In every dungeon are purples chests which can ONLY be opened by one character, which essentially forces you to keep them in your party all the time or be forced backtrack through every dungeon with them, as getting every chest is an achievement for this game. You can also NEVER swap out the character you choose to start with, and for the life of me I cannot figure out why they chose to do this. This pretty much guarantees that your main character will be over-leveled relative to the rest of the party, and for the life of my I can't figure out why they chose to add this restriction. The game is also slightly grindy. I am doing nearly all of the side missions and optional dungeons, and yet I still find myself constantly underleveled and needing to grind for whatever story section I am on. You are constantly swapping party members in and out and needing to keep them levelled up to keep up with the rest of the party. Also, when buying equipment at shops, it only lets you buy equipment for your current party and not any of your standby characters, so I find myself constantly having to swap out active party members just to buy equipment and rearrange who has which items equipped. The writing style is also this weirdly stilted, formal-sounding medieval-fantasy English. The worst offender of this is H'aanit, who speaks in a dialect of pseudo-Middle English. I've read a bunch of Shakespeare, so I know what Middle English sounds like, and this ain't it chief. Instead she is written in some kind of made-up "ye olde Englishe" writing style which to me is more annoying than cool. Once again, I am left asking myself why they wanted this, for what should really be a gimmick for some random NPC and not one of the main story characters. Despite this, the combat system with the weakness and "break" system is fun and works well, if a bit repetitive, and the graphical effects look nice. Sadly, I had trouble running this on an iGPU without lowering the resolution to 720p because of this.

I really liked the more charchter focused story focus in the game rather than your typical main story about defeating the big bad villain. The HD 2D art is beautiful to look at. Lastly the combat was a bit on the simple side with items and abilties, but at least that also made the combat quick to do.

Excelente juego RPG. La historia de cada personaje es entretenida, pero lo malo es que no me convence que en realidad estén viajando juntos. En mi opinión, las interacciones entre los integrantes no es frecuente y te olvidas de que están compartiendo caminos. Al final si entretiene jugarlo. Lo jugué en PC y en SteamDeck. En ambos va en popa. Si te gusta los RPGS, no te arrepentirás de jugarlo. Espero que me entre ganas para jugar OP II, pero no me dio ese deseo el final de esta primera entrega.

This is HANDS DOWN the best jrpg I have played so far. i didn't play many yet, but Octopath sets the bar very high, First off, art and music are both of the absolute highest quality. Absolute peak. And like, since ost is arguably the most important aspect of a game for me, that is an IMMEDIATE massive positive factor. Gameplay is also great. While the framework of story chapters is a bit repetitive, the combat absolutely makes up for it, as it is incredible. And the true final boss is soo good...All the stories are nice and sweet, some more epic than others, though never anything too crazy. But I do like the way they all connect in the end. In general, Octopath is an amazing game, absolutely can recommend.

30 hours in god this game is so fun yet simple in gameplay, feels great, like the different usages of the travelers cause of path skills. I just got everyone and am starting the 2nd chapter, the sense of exploration in just picking your path for the next person you want to add to your party is such simple but fun game design. Story is great so far no exp share sucks but for a game like this I can honestly get past it since unlike some other rpgs you are forced to use a certain character in their chapters, it makes it feel more natural to grind them up on the way to their next story. this game is great cant wait to keep playing.
