About
Octohill is a casual ski resort simulator where you can try to build and manage your own resort on one of the countless mountain maps. You will be drawing trails and terraforming slopes, managing finances, transportation, construction and maintenance, but the game main focus is on careful planning.
In Octohill, you are building your ski resort from scratch. You will be choosing best spots on the slopes, prepare terrain and mark areas for the trails, connect them to ski lifts and public roads and provide all the services your visitors look for. With intuitive building mechanics and fixed grid layout you may relax and focus on planning and creativity.
Your resort will attract very few visitors in the beginning, but as you cater to their needs your reputation will rise, allowing more people on your slopes and bigger incomes in your bills. Every skier has their own preferences and skills, keep that in mind when planning another expansion as you need to keep your resort profitable and your visitors satisfied.
Octohill comes with several default maps based on the real world locations such as French Alps or Rocky Mountains, which you can use to recreate one of the famous resorts. But if you get bored with them, you may also try highly customizable procedurally generated maps, or even use your own heightmap image.

im gonna have to thumb it down... same as in the demo... the concept is there and it could be a great game one day... but making slopes and connecting buildings and figuring out why the slopes are just not aligning up etc... its just bad and frustrating. when you try to spend 30min just setting up the buildings with the roads and ticket offices and nothing is still connected because of god knows what... ehhh cmon
11/10 best cityish-builder I've played maybe because I spend all my time and money on skiing but what else is there to live for Went broke terraforming the mountain. check Ski Patrol no where to be found. check Lift lines into the parking lot. check Hotels everywhere to price out the locals. check 4-5 restaurants so you know the $30 burger is about to be mid. check Only Red and Black runs cause mama don't raise no... check Maybe add some form of glades or terrain park? idk but there is so much opportunity and if you have read this far and if you are on the fence of buying this then you're probably not someone who's catching first lift with me but please just close your eyes buy it and thank me later (only after you get a hang of terraforming)
Getting to understand the basics gave me few headaches but once you can see through it gets much better. There's much more terrain manipulation and much less management than one can expect. Watching the cute little guys slowly skiing down after all the blood and sweat you spilled is very satisfying and almost meditative
If am I completely honest, this is a thumbs down at the moment. But I couldn't do it because there is such a good game waiting underneath what is there at the moment and I would love the devs to continue to build on it. I am genuinely having fun even with the current frustrations. The game is clearly tailored to designing slopes rather than managing a business, which I love. It has so much replay-ability. The pathing of the skiers has been done amazingly, no issues there. It's so fun and satisfying to watch them scoot around. The game play is smooth and I have had loads of fun thinking about what slopes I could make. However, there are frustrations. These are the things I personally think would improve the game.
UX Issues

If you feel the need to tell people about changing the font in the very first screen, rethink the font. You are correct, it's not a good, clear font.
By default, Q and E should rotate the camera. R and F should zoom.
I'm not 100% on this one but it seems like the camera still collides with the ground even when you're zoomed out.
The nested menus are annoying. The menus should stay open until you either select something from it, click off them or click a close button. They should not disappear on mouseLeave, it's so annoying because they're thin and it's so easy to miss the menu with your mouse, especially the menus with a few levels.
It feels like the screen is very easily cluttered with UI elements. I feel like right clicking should close UI elements.
It should show you, you have the demolish tool selected. I have accidentally deleted a building by mistake so many times because I have the tool selected and I haven't noticed. Make the cursor a little bulldozer or something like that.
You should be able to demolish buildings from the building's menu. You should also be able to cancel a demolition from this menu too. Like in my previous point, I have accidentally demolished buildings and there is seemingly no way to stop this happening.
The building menus should close on a right click. If you have nothing else open, just a building menu and you right click, it brings up the pause menu instead of closing the building's menu, which is extremely weird to me. (This would go some way to solving the cluttering too).
The overlays disappear when you are using them. For example, if you bring up the "Potential difficulty overlay" and you make your terrain change, then you right click to stop using that terraform tool, the overlay disappears as well. Overlays should only disappear when I turn them off, this could be through clicking them again in the menu, or by using a hotkey, ideally both. But they should not disappear from a right click.
Time seems to be in minutes? Like real life minutes I think? Maybe months? I don't know. I feel like it would be easier to just implement "days" in the game (which can still last 1 minute if you want) and it would be so much clearer what is happening, especially with finances.
You need to turn edge scrolling off straight away. If the mouse is on a menu, it should not edge scroll even if it is turned on.
It would be great if there was a visual representation of the distance of effect of the buildings, mainly the rescue hut.

Game Play Issues

It took me 3 goes to complete the tutorial. I thought I was being stupid at first, but it does need fixing. For example wherever you place the rescue hut thing in the tutorial, I guarantee you will have to demolish it in the next step. It then moves on to showing you the estimation tool, and it just kept saying "This is impossible" or whatever, even though I was just following what it was saying. I have no clue why, but it worked on the 3rd go.
Something other reviewers have mentioned as well is the terrain tools need some work. The feedback isn't clear at all and it can be very difficult to make things match up. I don't mind this so much because it adds challenge to the game, but I feel at the moment it's not so much a challenge because you can work out what you need to do (the challenging part) it's just near impossible to get the tools to actually do what you want them to sometimes. Whether it is through the way some tiles look like they're not on the same level, but they are? or sometimes you're selecting a groomed tile without realising, I don't know, but this is what I mean by the feedback isn't clear.
Groomed zones are very annoying to work with. I feel there are two different tools that have been made into one here. There should be a "Walking" kind of zone, for around your buildings to connect them up and there should be a "Slope" tool to declare slope routes. Making them the same tool makes it frustrating to use and even though I have successfully played a few games now, I am still not 100% sure how I properly declare what a slope is, it feels like trial and error every time.
Just give it a slope/route tool. A tool that doesn't do any terraforming or grooming or anything you just literally say, I am going to have a route go from this tile, to this tile. If you haven't groomed or terraformed that route correctly that's on you then. Guests won't use the route or injure themselves using it and you'll have to deal with it if it's not set up properly, but at least I will know properly where my routes are then.
You should be able to place buildings on groomed zones. Especially the likes of the ticket offices and stuff. Feels like a pointless restriction?
You should be able to terraform a groomed tile. Having to delete the groomed status, terraform and then reapply it is not only needless, it makes my slopes mess up sometimes and it's just another annoying unnecessary restriction.
Placing chairlifts needs some work. It keeps doing this thing where it places two pylons immediately after the station, so it's taking up 3 tiles in a place where I need the space. This alone has ruined some maps for me and feels like another needless restriction. This is also not how chairlifts would work in real life, so they look unnatural. I also find the placement quite restrictive. Like, you can be making your very first chairlift and theres a building with loads of space around either side of it, but both routes clip the building so you just can't do it. Personally I think the best way to do this is to not autoplace the pylons, allow me to place them wherever I want, with a maximum range from the last station/pylon that was placed.
Needs some smaller maps. The tutorial map is actually the most fun map to play on so far. The others are huge and overwhelming at first. For late game they would be great, but you get lost far too easy in them at the start of the game. There is a map called Lone Mountain or something like that, there is a huge huge map to work with, and I made my best resort completely within the little corner that is marked off by the road. I know you can make your own maps, and I am guessing you can probably share them in the future? But I just think a few smaller maps would go a long way.
I feel like 50% of the time you use the estimation tool, it just says it's impossible. I barely use it even though it would make the game so much more playable.
However, I really hope people see that I have left this review because I am so desperate to play this game with these changes. Because it's a fantastic idea for a game that is 80% of the way there. Please do not let my criticisms put you off, I have still given it a thumbs up for a reason. And as you can see all of my points are mostly fixable teething issue type things and not actual flaws with the game itself. This game has the potential to be a true cult classic.
I've played a few other ski resort tycoon/simulators before and none of them ever really scratched the itch, but this one does. You have the ability to terraform the terrain to make some interesting trail layouts for your skiers, and I feel there is a good balance with the amount of management you have to do to keep your resort running smoothly. Pros: - You have the ability to import custom heightmaps, allowing you to build your resort on mountains that are accurate to real life if you want to. There are also lots of customizations you can make for generated heatmaps. - Lots of settings can be adjusted to make the financial management of the game easier/harder. - The developer is actively working on making the game better, and is very responsive to player feedback. - Mechanics of the skier decisionmaking is surprisingly advanced - The game is being on a grid based system makes the terraforming itself fairly intuitive (more on this later). Cons - Building trails is not very intuitive even after terraforming. Connecting a trail to a base area and getting buildings placed and connected early on is a struggle. Dev is actively working on things to help new players learn how to use the tools. - The UI is a little clunky looking - Viewing the topography to see how much of a slope there is where you are trying to build your trail, is a little overwhelming and some might find the terraforming tedious, even if the tools are straightforward. - There are still some bugs that will pop-up, and it's pretty easy to badly mess things up if you don't know what you're doing or aren't careful (getting skiers/vehicles stuck). - The grid system does limit the creativity you can have in your trails.
Klare Empfehlung!
Only giving it a thumbs up since it seems alright... I struggled with the building being annoying... I just quit out after getting frustrated. Game seems like it can be decent, for now I just dont have the time to fight with getting a simple slop created. Hope to see updates, $10 was fine to try it.
Overall, great game if you like building a ski resort, especially considering the price. It was a bit of a learning curve at first due to the terrain mechanics, but not bad once you get used to it. The update to the estimator tool was great and made building runs and navigating terrain a lot easier.
It's a bit short but considering the price, I've had a lot of fun. That plus the game being early access (hope to see more!) and being the only one worth playing since Ski park manager more than 2 decades ago, I'm very happy to recommend the game. Oh and yeah, if you miss that old one, I feel a similar vibe here. I've had maybe 6 hours of gameplay between the full game and the playtest last year.
