Horror that doesn't rely on cheap jumpscares is probably one of the hardest things to pull off in gaming outside of comedy, especially for indie developers. With this in mind I kind pains me to give a thumbs-down to a game like Octave, but the truth is that despite the amount of effort and artistry that went into its creation, I feel the game's flaws end up outweighing its many virtues. Let's get this out of the way: Octave is short. Very short. Enough to be considered a demo, or a prologue for a more fleshed-out product. And it certainly looks like it: the game features above average production values, especially considering there is just one man behind the name Anate Studio. This is a really impressive outing in the graphics and sound department. The atmosphere drips with menace, punctuated by intriguing music and sharp, creepy visuals. In the media department, the game could definitely be a contender for the next indie horror hit. The general feel reminded me of a cross between Amanita and the old Dark Seed games, sans Giger, of course. Alas, the gameplay is where the game tumbles and falls on its face. Octave is billed as an adventure. There isn't much in terms of story, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I can live with no handholding at all, even with an open resolution that doesn't offer much in the way of explanation. My limit, however, is being forced into clumsy timing puzzles that can only be solved by using a poorly implemented and unreliable "running" mechanic. And there's a lot of that, unfortunately. The inclusion of these action puzzles completely kills the mood and unnecessarily heighten the frustration factor for me (they also serve to pad the total time). Double clicks are not always registered correctly, and the camera often lags behind the character when changing facing. This creates problems at the beginning, where the character has to dodge barely visible hands coming out of the ground, but especially in the last level of the game, where you're asked to outrun a particular monster. Can't help to think this is the wrong engine for this kind of gameplay. Consider, instead, the chapter with the house, where actual point 'n click mechanics come out and shine. This chapter is a winner: scary and logical, with rewarding puzzles, if a bit on the easy side (there's also a hint button that highlights all interactable objects in a scene). Were the entire game like this, I would recommend it without reservations. As it stands, however, Octave is too short, frustrating and gameplay-wise all over the place to truly enjoy. It feels not so much a fully formed game as a showcase for the dev's talent and potential. Here's hoping for better, bigger things from them.

Aimless wander. Story: You play as an unnamed man, who finds himself dragged to a field and about to be executed, however his would be killer finds himself torn apart by an evil creature. Freed, you find yourself trying to escape the now dangerous world around you. That little description is about all you can muster from the opening scene as in Octave doesn't really have any story whatsoever. It's a very much you piece it all together and everyone will have a different opinion on what happened in the so called story, but that doesn't help much. Mostly because the game's levels are just levels that don't link together and just confuse you more than anything. Graphics: Visuals are a 100% Octave strongest feature. It has an absolutely phenomenal art style and it just oozes atmosphere, each location looks great and my only wish was that there wasn't this much filler. There's quite a few screens that just don't serve any purpose and are there just to pad out the game. One thing that I'm not really too huge on is the animations. They are about the only bad thing about the visuals. When you try to make your character sprint it sometimes doesn't do what you tell it and then it just sort of flickers between the walking and sprinting animation and the other animations aren't that great either. Audio: Now while I'm not really sure about this, I'm pretty certain a good chunk of the sound effects and maybe even some music are all stock free. I'm only pretty sure about the sound effects, cause it has some effects I've definitely heard in other games too, however the music I'm not too sure on, but even then it's nothing special. Even if it's stock free music, it actually did fit the theme of the game well and definitely helped with the atmosphere, so they at least the developers picked tracks that will suit their game the best and I did like quite a few of them, but quite a few are also not that great either, just sort of there. Gameplay: Octave is basically a point and click adventure game, where your character is placed on a 2D plain akin to the likes of The Cat Lady. So let's get straight into it, Octave's gameplay is incredibly mediocre. The game drops you off and doesn't really explain anything that's going on and you're left to figure everything out for yourself. At first it ends up being semi-simple, your only goal is to interact with the only item you can see which is candles you have to light, which allows you to progress further into the game and then later down the line it does force you to solve some puzzles which some of them are pretty cool. However items for puzzles are a bit weird. There's no text whatsoever and sometimes items don't look like what they are and then there's the trouble of not knowing what you can do, like for example that you can combine items, cause although it's a staple in the genre, it doesn't explain that you can do this and it leads to you just wandering around the environment. This also leads into a really horrible final boss fight, which I don't want to spoil, but it's just so annoying. It's not even particularly hard, the design is just sort of made to be annoying with your progress constantly being halted, because you're trying to get your bearings together. Verdict: I was very negative throughout the entire review and I still really didn't think this game wasn't horrible either. I think this is one of those instances where a mixed option would be ideal. If you really like the genre there is something here, however even if it's cheap price tag, I'd say wait for a further sale, considering it's not a good game either. Final Rating: 6/10 Pros: + Absolutely great visual style + Some pretty decent puzzles + Great atmosphere Cons: - Story makes no sense - Sound effects sound like they're stock free - Gameplay isn't properly explained and sometimes leave you wandering around If you liked this review please consider joining https://steamcommunity.com/groups/completingthebacklog and https://steamcommunity.com/groups/ImperialReviews
In my quest to slowly but surely review every, single game that I've played in my Steam Library, I'm hopping into the time machine, setting the controls back 4 years and making a stop off in 2018 to talk a little bit about point n' click sidescroller, Octave. After completing the game it stuck with me all this time for 2 primary reasons; firstly, the presentation for a one man creation was completely top of the line and secondly, I more or less didn't enjoy anything else about it. Roll 'em, Mr. Carpenter! Where Octave is at its absolute best is in the visual, audio and atmosphere department. It's a dark, dreary and ethereal looker that could be considered kindred to games like Detention, Downfall, Neverending Nightmares or even the recent n' awesome Lamentum (mainly the creature design). From your own sprite to the absolutely sinister, slimy looking fiends that chase you through its swamps, forests and caves, Anate Studios deserves nothing less than praise for pulling off such visuals with such a skeleton crew dev team. Environments really work up a feeling of desolation and even if animations aren't totally pristine, the overall design more than gets the job done. Sound is creepy and on point, hitting its full stride on a good pair of noise-cancelling headphones. It is just a crying shame that you'll be weeping so hard over its lack of story and bad gameplay that it'll totally fog your vision from enjoying the best parts of the experience. Well, maybe not but personally, Octave didn't anything for me. The story speaks for itself. You are a man pulled from his world and dropped into a very strange realm where you are hunted by demonic and alien looking creatures. For whatever reason, the design of the protagonist made me feel like there was some tough fought detecting and puzzling going on; he appearing to be a distant relative of Agent Mulder. Don't get your notepads and pencils out yet you hard boilers because 95% of the game's brainteasers are simple to obtuse inventory puzzles that rush over the body like a bottle of Nyquil mixed with a few shots of your favorite toe-curler. You'll pick up random stuff, put it random places, figure out what pixels you need to hunt and the ones that you don't. You'll activate things that need to be activated and go from area to area not really knowing what end goal that you're hoping to achieve. It's so rudimentary and never gets invigorating for a moment. To spice up the broth, pinches of dodge, run and hide are thrown into the stew without much thought. You can die and probably will as I often found that my presses and clicks didn't register or I'd seemingly click on where I need to go and end up not going there or far short of my goal. Making matters in the end game worse there is a final boss battle of sorts where you need to light candles while an awesome looking boss monster tries to snuff them out. Octave's all over the place controls and lack of point n' click precision are in full bloom here and I spent the majority of my time trying to finish that mess in one piece. When the hammer of judgment comes down, the sad fact is that this great looking and sounding game is simply not any fun to play, nor does its story ever engage the player and work up the excitement it is so capable of having. Hey, it's got trading cards though! Sure it's cheap but there are some weeks when I've paid the house bills, had to fix my car and do a bunch of regular Joe b.s. that one $3 to $10 game is all I've got the cash for. And you know what? I do my damndest to make it a good one. Octave is not a good one. If you want my trading cards for it, hit me up and I'll try to give them to you, although Steam has a habit of not okaying my trades at the last minute. I need to study up on that or maybe it just doesn't allow Octave cards to be traded. Once its in you...it stays. Ughtave indeed. P.S. I would play another game from this dev because if they could couple the visuals with excellent gameplay, we've got a serious new point n' click threat on the playing field.

Octave
