My Playtime: 0.8h (finished the game)
Intro
The Kite is a point-and-click game that tells a short, tragic story of a mother living in a home with her husband and son. Plus, it's hard to find objects that can be picked up.

In-Depth Review

Story
As you might expect from the short playtime, the story is quite short. In fact, it is so short that I'm afraid that I might go into a spoiler if I try to explain more than the premise. Basically, you play as a mother living in a home with a husband and a son. It seems to take inspiration from old-school families where the man rules the house. The story itself can drive your anger and take a depressing turn right away, although due to the short playtime, I find it hard to resonate with the characters.
The Game
Gameplay The Kite is a point-and-click game. You need to pick up objects and use them on other objects to progress the game. However, progression is very vague. The game hardly ever tells you what to do, and new areas can be unlocked without you knowing. Moreover, there is one occasion where you need to backtrack to previous areas to progress, making it hard to notice. The in-game pointer changes color when you hover over an interactable object, but they tend to be useless. It's hard to notice interactable objects from the map, and the object's shape on the ground doesn't help either to make them noticeable. You end up having to hover over the whole screen just to find them all, like finding a needle in a haystack. Moreover, it's hard to figure out what to do with an object after you get it due to the lack of a progression hint. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3632733988 For a short game, there are a lot of areas that you can traverse. Each area has a set of puzzles that will progress the story, although the game might or might not tell you what to do. Some puzzles are contained in one spot, although most of them require you to move between more than one screen to finish them. One puzzle can be annoying to finish. There is a puzzle where you are supposed to find 9 numbers from a sheet with many numbers in it. I had to calculate all the numbers in this list, and it took way more time than needed. I think most of my playtime was spent on that puzzle. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2524354460 Length and Difficulty I finished the game in 0.8h. The game can be challenging to finish due to the lack of direction, although there are some Steam guides that can help you to finish the game. Autosave is supported, but it works more like a chapter select. You can load from the beginning of a chapter and play normally with that. There is no replayability at all since the game only has one ending.
Conclusion
The Kite's story is too short, and despite its attempt to capture your heart, the horrible gameplay just makes it worse instead. I had to struggle through the whole game, especially since I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Sadly, I couldn't recommend playing it.

"The Kite (2012)" is a ultra-short Indie game by a single Ukrainian developer. Russian/Ukrainian/Post-Soviet lifestyle simulator. If you've seen the Lazy Square youtube video "THE SIMPSONS. Russian Art Film Version", you get the gist. I played the somewhat-sequel "Repentant (2018)" first, it too was a very short game but it had voice acting and better art. This game on the other hand is like a rough draft. Indie, but I'd call it very primitive. No wonder, the game was remade in "Little Kite (2017)". The art is better but the original story was neutered, which completely castrates the atmosphere of the original first game. This game has its issues but the oppressing atmosphere is the most defining point. Don't understand why it was butchered, of all things... This rough game tries to tell a very serious and story touching on sensitive topics, yet the typical point & click gameplay and puzzles are completely breaking the flow and turn all seriousness into a joke. The dumb writing and decisions of the main character do not help either. The ludo-narrative dissonance is great with this one! Son is gone, instead of going into the streets to search for him, let's annoy the husband who doesn't care at all. Spilling his vodka and breaking the TV is not going to magically convince him to help. Grow a brain, you clearly displayed it with your know-how in electronics and riddles! Firstly I blame game design, secondly the women victims who think fist-fighting a bear is a good idea. So if a gorilla charges you, you bow as instructed? But when you know from personal experience that smashing the vodka bottle results in a busted lip, then why do it again?? Repeating the same action hoping for a different outcome is the definition of madness. Highly amateurish game design. Primitive is the better word. I am very lenient towards Indie projects, especially those made by a solo dev, but this game feels like a small project from Newgrounds website back in 2008. The main issue is that even after 5 years of community feedback, the dev remade the game repeating all mistakes while butchering the story but with a beautiful cherry on top (art/voice acting). I am glad the developer keeps on making games and improving greatly in the art department. If only the writing and game design would catch up with 2025... Also people play to unwind and escape reality, having it shoved in the face with such games is not very fun. Why there are no games like this? Because people know it is hard to make and usually ends up tasteless. Typically expert developers hide such themes in the backstories of horror games. An indie dev couldn't possibly match up, especially in this darn point & click adventure genre.. I don't want to be too critical, but sadly the bad far outweigh the good. Having played 2 games from this dev, I have hope they will grow better but I will hold on until an actually good game is made.
Oof. Short point-and-click game that will kick you right in the feels!
