About
Have you ever done something you regret? What if I told you there was a way to fix it? Make it so that something never happened at all; or perhaps, just happened differently. What if I told you it was as simple as a game of solitaire?
What if I told you that the game’s name was Occlude?
The game’s not simple. The rules are hidden, and you find them by playing and experimenting. Make sure you have some coins - the coins will show when you’re on the right path. There are seven Rituals, each their own puzzle, increasing in difficulty.
There are seven Entities, and they know you’re playing. Don’t worry about them. Worrying doesn’t do anything. I shouldn’t have mentioned them at all.
Occlude is an occult game of solitaire stuffed with secrets. Piece together the rules even as they resist your attempts to decipher them.
Uncover the brain-melting story behind the game that was never a game as you chip away at reality one card at a time. Develop your mastery of each Ritual to gain access to even deeper, forbidden lore in the Archives.
Solitaire: but not as you know it.
Seven Rituals: progress through increasingly complex card puzzles with unique hidden rulesets.
Twenty-four Cardinals: unlock Cardinals, variations of Rituals that stand as unique puzzles in their own right.
Two modes: The fiendishly difficult Classic Mode and our new, pleasantly vexing Story Mode with less punishing RNG, a second free cell and unlimited Undo.
Reality-bending narrative: uncover a cosmic horror story about a world broken by countless attempts to fix it.
Atmospheric sound design: immersive audio cues that shift based on your closeness to solving each puzzle.
Secret documents: discover fragments of forbidden texts that provide clues about Occlude's origins.
Terrible secrets: for those foolish enough to look for them.

In a word: Unsatisfying I like games where you figure out the rules as you go. Losing a bunch for not knowing them, then figuring them and out then using mastery of the previously obscured systems to do well feels good. This game isn't like that. The "Figuring out the rules" part wasn't that hard (for the first few rounds that you can play within the refund window), but knowing them isn't enough of an advantage in the core gameplay to make much of a difference. It felt like I spent relatively little time figuring things out and relatively more bashing my head off RNG once I knew them. The secret rules are less "Figure out new ways to move and play cards" and more "Figure out which usually legal move will cost you the game" often something like "A randomly selected card can lose you the game and by knowing the secret rule you can find out which one after you've got access to it." Knowing the rule doesn't let you look at your board and know your moves, you need to expose cards (without knowing which ones) to learn what the rule means this round. That boils down to "By exposing this card you have learned that in order to win you should not have played the move that exposed this card". The result is that it's like solitaire but without being able to plan ahead. Which is kinda like tetris without rotating the pieces or mario without jumping. The twist they've put on the formula breaks what works about the game they're trying to twist.
3.5/10 its like solitaire where you cant move stacks can stack both ways one card at a time can be dealt no win scenarios, i moved 1 card and from spending 8 minutes looking at every possibility they all ended up with a locked up board trying to find the secret untold rule and win the hidden coins + only 8$
Definitely a mixed thumbs up, For the first half of the game, and the initial set of achievements, I absolutely loved it. Working out the hidden rules behind each Ritual was incredibly satisfying, especially the second puzzle. Once the solution clicks, it feels so obvious that you wonder how you ever missed it. It's the Cardinals, and the second batch of achievements, where the game lost me. Rather than feeling like clever deductions, many of them become so obtuse that I don't think a normal player could reasonably work them out without outside help. They stop being satisfying puzzles and start feeling like exercises in frustration. Even onec I had the answer I still was baffled as to how on earth you were supposed to work this out.
All in all the presentation is fine, but there is just not enough to keep me willing to invest time. Maybe if you are the type to sit down spend a good chunk of time, maybe 15-60 minutes per puzzle (
there are about 6 with 4 variations(?) was not invested enough to figure out what the cardinal system was about
), then maybe this game works for you. 8 euros is a bit much for how much you get, but it's not bankbreaking (I got this game in a humble bundle) I think the difficulty and potential tedium can be split into two aspects. One is to figure out the hidden rule and the other is to work with the restriction of not playing one of the 4 cards that are part of the hidden rule. Once you figured out the rule every puzzle comes down to the same solution, leave that card until the end. There could have been done a lot more to keep things interesting, but there just isn't. Making the game very unsatisfying after you have done the same thing several times. Figuring out the hidden rule is fine if it is fairly straightforward to figure out, but after the third rule it just becomes tedious to figure it out. Keep in mind that sometimes you spend a good 15 minutes on a puzzle only to get to a boardstate where you cannot do anything anymore and have to restart purely because of RNG. I recommend this game if you got in on sale and just spend a few hours going through all the puzzles in story mode where the tedium is a lot more manageable. Or if you are willing to potentially invest some good hours in figuring out the puzzles.
Interesting solitaire but needs more explaining and more polishing.
The solitaire is good, but the fluff is really nasty.
Getting every cardinal in this game was difficult! Not in the way solitaire is normally difficult, either. I felt like a code breaker. There were some very satisfying epiphanies, especially in the west cardinals. Usually the solution feels "obvious" after you've seen it, which is really impressive. That is not an easy thing to do consistently in game design, and they really pull it off here.
