DISCLAIMER: This is a first impressions review, and NOT a full review
Oblitus is a game developed by Connor Ullmann and published by Adult Swim Games It's an okay game, it tries an mixes Dark Souls with 2D side-scrolling but doesn't execute it as well enough as I would have liked The graphics and music and generally nice and pleasing but the controls are horribly clunky and finicky This game is not for everyone, but it's a cute-ish type of game to play in short bursts and I'd highly recommend getting it during a sale, permanent price drop or given to you for free
RECOMMENDED :)
REVIEW SOURCES:

None
Im of two minds about this game. On the one hand, it was a lot of fun to learn and play, and theres a definite air of mystery that surrounds the whole game. On top of that the bosses are Mostly fun to figure out and destroy after many repetitions. However... there are some significant negatives as well. Chiefly, my God does this game need a checkpoint system of some type. It feels like it was trying to strike a balance between 'souls-like' difficulty and 'rogue-like' exploration, but endded up falling between two stools, having neither the consistency that souls-like difficulty needs to feel fair despite the oppression, nor the exploration and slow between-runs progression of a rogue-like. Because of the lack of checkpoints and progression between runs, the difficulty feels more stifling than challenging, and the need to continally retread old ground with nothing to show in terms of advancement begins to wear very quickly. The random elements end up more frustrating because you cant find that one really great upgrade again and you feel like no run is going to go well until RNGeesus blesses you with the right combination of boss location and upgrades. All of this ALMOST chokes the fun out of the game. Almost. The postiives outweigh the negatives, because the gameplay is fun and at the very least DOES provoke the same 'souls-like' feeling of satisfaction when you progress despite the games limitations. Overall, a high 70's low 80s game, that could easily have been a high 80's low 90's with just a simple checkpoint system. Good regardless, but painful for what might have been.

I didn't have any technical problems with this game, but I still wouldn't recommend it. This game might seem fun at first as you explore the world, yet the dangers that lurk in the shadows are less dangerous than the oversight of the game not having any saves, essentially a 2D Dark Souls like other reviews point out. I still had fun playing the game and still think it's possible to enjoy it; however, without saves, this game will most likely lead more frustration than enjoyment dying and losing all progress. My recommendation and an easy fix would be to make the healing objects save points. Another consideration would be to make a choice in the settings for a casual mode with saves and a hard mode, dark souls feel, without saves. Though, neither of those seem likely considering the game is more than 5 years old as of writing this, and in good conscious I can't recommend this game since it isn't polished enough in the game design regarding saves. It's also worth noting closing the game because you have to leave won't save it either, so putting down the game essentially isn't an option. I honestly just think it's bad game design. The art is still nice to look at though. If you do choose to play this game, I would recommend being ready for the inevitable frustration of dying and having to start all over again.
Overall this game's a positive experience, but it's certainly not perfect. The movement, music, and aesthetic are all honestly quite stellar. The music in particular is really well mixed, composed, and engaging. The jumping and rolling are quite responsive, and it's actually pretty fun to roll-jump around the areas once you figure out all the routes. The issues with the game begin when you get into the actual combat. The combat isn't necessarily bad, but rather it's just too easy for the most part. Almost all of the common enemies can be taken care of with the exact same approach, you either just roll past them and click until they're dead, or throw your spear at them until they're dead. 3 of the 4 bosses are absurdly easy as well, and the last one is only made more difficult due to fast common enemies that can bypass your shield constantly spawning throughout the fight. The last area in general is quite annoying, considering if you make one misstep you fall into this lake of toxic piss and die immediately. The only other issue I have with the game is its lack of replayability once you do finally beat the last boss. I only put as much time into the game as I did because of how many times I would blunder during the last area or the last boss fight, having to start the game all over again. But for someone who finds the game even easier than I do, they could possibly get everything they need out of it within an hour. Because of all of this, I recommend this game but really only if it's on sale or you're a true blue completionist, I got it on sale in an adult swim game bundle myself. It's definitely an intriguing, quirky little game though, I enjoyed it despite it's glaring issues.
bad
A fun, mysterious, single player platformer. The landscapes and art style, coupled with the music make this a great game to play at 4 a.m.
played for 15mins. no save points. not intuitive
