To get home, she must play a hot new trading card game and earn badges (to unlock a magic barrier). How does Nyanco Chan always find herself in these situations time and time again? - Disclaimer - I am required by Steam law to notify you that I received this game free of charge. However, I received no other compensation and I am bound by no obligation to write this review.
Gameplay
When combating NPCs, you must first create a five card hand (or "deck") using any card you own. Who goes first is selected randomly. There's a game I played before (called Strip Card Duel) with strikingly familiar mechanics, so I'll be quoting the review I wrote for that title — Each turn, every player places a card from their hand directly into the playing zone (or "field”). The field is divided into nine portions, each of which a card can be placed into. Cards have a numeric value assigned to each side, which interacts with adjacent cards on the field. Cards with a higher numeric value will capture the inferior card. The goal is be the one with the most captured cards when every slot on the field has been occupied. Nyanco Card, however, uses a "combo" system. . . which I wasn't fond of. By using combos, you can best opponents with higher grade cards and turn the tide of battle with a single, well placed card. Conversely, an opponent can wreck you in much the same way, and it's really frustrating. The loser must forfeit a card of the opponent's choice. The opponent may use that card in their deck, if they so please. During the beginning of the game, this mechanic is especially problematic, because you may lose all of your worthwhile cards, making advancement nearly impossible (or slow and tedious). I suggest save scumming for most of you, it'll make your experience better — and to debunk a myth presented by another reviewer (not naming names), you can save at anytime. On paper, the combo mechanic isn't too complicated. Before the game starts, Nyanco offers a written tutorial on how to play the game. I suggest taking a few screenshots. On that topic, developers should not expect players to screenshot a set of instructions before playing a game. Rather, players should be eased into the mechanics of a game, through beginner friendly combat and creative hand holding. If I wanted to read instructions, I'd get a board game — not a videogame.
Story
Nyanco Chan is lost in a fantasy world. How she found herself in Gensokyo is anyone's guess, but she wants out. A magical barrier prevents her from leaving Gensokyo, which can only be passed via a magic gate. To create a magic gate, Nycanco Chan needs to collect magical playing cards from a game called Touhou Cards. Nyanco Chan is joined by Reimu and Yukari, whom start her off with her first deck of cards. While she battles the denizens of Gensokyo for new (and better) cards, she will need to collect "Badges" to complete her journey. Badges you say? Sounds. . . familiar.
Visuals
The titlescreen looked okay, though visual elements could have used some work — perhaps Nyanco Channel would benefit from hiring a sprite artist (and boy golly! Am I right!) The in-game assets are an absolute mishmash. The character portraits are a mix between drawings (from differing digital mediums) and full body character sprites. The environment is drawn in a painterly style, which I thought looked unique, but clashed with the pixelated characters. In my opinion, the painterly environment was inappropriate. On the plus side, the artwork on the cards looks decent. Oh, and you can't adjust user preferences from an in-game interface. There are audio and display settings, but they can only be accessed via the "F1" key. I don't think this is acceptable. There are many vestigial interface elements, leftover code from the RPGMaker engine that wasn't removed (or hidden). The English leaves something to be desired, but it's far from bad. Trust me, I've seen bad English.
Verdict
I recommend this game if (A) you can look past glaring design flaws and (B) you save scum like there's no tomorrow. This was one of less fun Nyanco titles I have played. I think that this game should have went through more polish, before entering "Early Access". That, and it would have benefited from a better art department. - Words for the Devs - Thanks for the copy of this game! Recently, I have been very busy. I've been writing about videogames like a madman, but I put aside my morning for this title. I hope to see this game into something greater!
Buen juego y muy divertido
The game does not currently explain the rules for combos AT ALL. See screenshot: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2073561952 I was first move and placed the card at middle top. Opponent placed right top, causing some kind of "plus" combo flipping my card. According to the instructions (which scroll by so fast you'll have to read it twice) a plus combo is "When the total number of adjacent cards is the same". Well as can be clearly seen in the screenshot the total number of these adjacent cards is not the same with my card having a higher total number. EDIT: Even the devs cannot properly explain how this is supposed to work, while simultaneously claiming it's explained in the tutorial (it's not, not at all). If the devs add a detailed explanation of how the combos work, let me know and I'll edit this review. It's made in rpg maker and they couldn't be bothered to use a script to remove the superfluous menus like items, skills, equipment, and stats. Grammar and spelling mistakes which is par for the course of rpgm games. I know nothing of Touhou or Nyanco, I just like Triple Triad, so the "story" seems to rely heavily on knowledge of these subjects. You can't save anywhere even though it's a setting they can enable, and must instead find the right npc to save. There's no reason for this. No mouse control, you must use the keyboard. I've always hated the enemy having their cards hidden from view. It only makes the first few battles hard until you memorize their cards then it becomes pointless. Just let us always see what cards they have. It also removes all doubt of potential ai cheats.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2084246844

This is possibly the best Nyanco game yet! I have always enjoyed strategic card games and I've played at least one other game with a similar combat system as Nyanco Card before so I guess I can say that I'm no stranger to the gameplay. The map is also filled with various, absolutely-adorable sprites from the Touhou Universe (I assume) that you can read more about when you interact with them. Some may even challenge you to a card duel! ------------------
Watch me play!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwPhvnYD_wo Replayed the game from the beginning just so I could get some gameplay footage to accompany my written review :) Enjoy! ---------------------- The Touhoudex is a brilliant part of the gameplay as well. Being an self-professed "gotta collect 'em all" addict, I have this strong urge to just collect all the cards in the game. Not to mention, these cards are very beautifully created, making the process of collecting them all so much more worthwhile. Now, the main way you can get new cards (from my playthrough at least) is by defeating other players at a card duel since the winner will be able to pick one card of their choice from their opponent's hand... and yes, this also means that if you lose a duel, you'll lose one card to your opponent... and the AIs here aren't fools - they will usually go for one of your highest valued cards. There's another way you can get more cards and that is by purchasing them from the card vendor near to the starting point. There's also another character right above the vendor who is selling random card packs. Everyone will start the game with a nice 2k gold in their pockets, but I'm not very sure how I could earn in-game cash since I don't seem to be earning any money by winning card battles (just the new card). That said, I think I might have spotted a pretty major bug. There were several situations during card battles where the opponent's card shouldn't be able to flip any of the cards on both sides of it because its numbers are too low, but for some reason, the cards got flipped and a sure-win turned into a loss in an instant. Maybe I didn't really understand how the combos really work here - I experienced the same issues in the other similar game that I've played before as well but I've never encountered a situation when 4s could flip a 7 and an 8. Edit: As seen in the vid, the opponent was somehow able to trigger a combo when there shouldn't be one @14:41 So, TLDR?
Pros
+ Fun, strategic and challenging, card-based gameplay that may not be unique but is still fun nonetheless + Touhoudex! I love collecting stuff and besides cards, there are also badges (like a Pokemon gym badge; you'll get one whenever you defeat an opponent for the first time) and Steam achievements to collect. + Easy achievements - didn't get them all (yet) but by talking to all the characters once, you can already get at least half of the total number of achievements - hope I didn't miss out any! + Cute sprites and beautiful card art + Great narration and I love the music. I didn't get most of the Touhou references because I'm not familiar with it but the story is basically trying to help Nyanco return to her home world by collecting all the cards OR getting all the badges. + Replayability - I've just realized that you won't get to meet all the characters available in a single playthrough. So, if you want to get 100% achievements, expect to replay the game at least a few times. I'm on my second playthrough where I talked to everyone on the map and I'm still missing like 20 more characters. + If you plan on playing the game to completion, $4 is a fair price for the game. If not, you could always wait a while for a discount before committing :)
Cons/Feedback
- I think combat might still be a bit buggy. As mentioned, cards that shouldn't flip the cards around them somehow were able to. I think it might be linked to a faulty combo system? - Maybe place a mark, like a crossed swords icon, above a character's head if there's a duel to be had there. The icon can appear only after the player has "talked" to the character for the first time. Due to the sheer number of sprites on the map, it might be hard for a player to identify the ones with duels when they want to revisit a previously-defeated opponent and this icon would greatly help. - No way to earn extra coins?
Overall
Nyanco Card is definitely a step in the right direction,
and I might be slightly biased here because I typically enjoy this genre more than the other games that Nyanco had developed :P
The sprites and card art are fantastic; the gameplay is great (minus that combo/bug thingy), and need I say that the Touhoudex is the best? :) Cost-wise - and I'm repeating myself here, I think the $4 is worth it if you plan to complete the game... like getting all the achievements, the in-game cards, and badges (note that to win the game, you just need to get either all the cards or all the badges). However, if you just wanted to play the game through once, then you might want to wishlist the game first and keep an eye out for a discount. Hint: the Steam Summer Sale is just around the corner! ;)
Side Note

If you like this review and would like to follow me for more, please feel free to drop by my curator page: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/33780629-The-Midcore-Gamer/
Collect cards and battle against cute anime girls. Each card has 4 numbers, which you place in a grid of 3x3 to try and beat your opponents. Refreshing and unlike anything I've ever seen before! https://youtu.be/EJsJpuT3pfg
This is a pretty neat RPG maker game. It is recommended for the following case. 1. If you are interested in the Touhou Project. 2. Players who have a nostalgia for a Triple Triad. 3. Followers who like Nyanco-chan or Nyanco Channel.
Following after the end of the previous game Nyanco Dream, we have the continuation of the story of the young cat girl Nyanco, in her explorations through the universe of Touhou after we crossed a portal in the previous game that sent us to this world instead of back home. This time our protagonist needs to find magic cards in order to open a new portal and return back to her original world. ^^ However, not everything will be so easy, as many of the cards were stolen and are now with several people around the world, becoming a very popular game where the objective is to end up with more cards than the opponent. This can be done by the fact that each of the cards has four numbers, one for each of the directions going from 1 to 10. When a card is placed on the board, if the value of your card facing the opponent is higher than his, the opponent's card becomes yours. If the value is equal or less nothing will happen. The game continues until the board containing nine squares is full, the winner is whoever owns the most cards at the end, marked as red for the opponent and blue for the player, all of this will sound familiar for those who have played Triple Triad on FFVIII, along with the card frame design and board. ^^ After each victory, we can choose a card from those used by the opponent to be part of our collection, but be careful, as it it will be the same for the girls in this universe, who if they win can take a card from us, making the way of gathering all the cards longer and harder, because they can and will use the cards they took against the protagonist. ^^ Nyanco Card is the fourth game in the Nyanco series. Produced by the developer of the same name Nyanco Channel. It is a relaxing and fun card game, we will enjoy it while exploring the world and meeting all the girls in the Touhou universe. During the protagonist's journey to collect all the cards and finally be able to return home and relax like a good cat girl. ^^
