Nuclear Throne is a post-apocalyptic roguelike-like top-down shooter. Not 'the final hope of humanity' post-apocalyptic, but 'humanity is extinct and mutants and monsters now roam the world' post-apocalyptic. Can you reach the Nuclear Throne?

It took me 53 hours to beat the game for the first time. If we compare to The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, then this game is much harder without any doubt. The progression is also a bit weird: there are seven areas, but to me the hardest areas are actually the three first ones (and the 3rd one especially). It becomes easier the more you progress in the run. Not to say that the last areas aren’t challenging either. Moreover, it seems like the game becomes harder and harder the more you play, but this difficulty increase is independent of your number of wins, as in my case (at the time of writing this review), I have only a single victory, yet the game became significatively harder than it initially was (even before that win), with more ennemies spawning and sometimes stronger ones too. Nonetheless, it is still a very fun game. I am not sure about the replayability aspect yet, however, considering the difficulty and the addictiveness of the game, expect to be spending a lot of hours on this game. It still probably less fair than Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and definitely requires more skills, but the fast pace makes it quick to start over. I would recommend to those who enjoy the "rogue-like" genre. Edit: on the "less fair" aspect of the game: this game is more RNG-heavy than The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is. Since the maps are generated randomly and aren’t room-like like in TBOIR, it offers more possibility in the way they are designed, but it also makes some maps incredibly hard (to not say almost impossible sometimes) to beat in a different fashion than the way things are in TBOIR. There are many ways the RNG is present in this game, but another form is in the way the boss of the fifth area spawns: it will spawn in a random position near you, but if it spawns on you, it will instantly kill you and the run will be over. Unfortunately, luck is your only recourse here, there is nothing you can do about it. Your run could be perfect, but if you’re unlucky in that specific moment, you’re screwed. Finally, bugs (or at least, unexpected behaviours) are present in the game and although they don’t alter the experience of the game too much, they do make the game less enjoyable. Such occurrences would be difficult to describe, but they become obvious when they appear. This shouldn’t prevent you from trying out the game. TBOIR is probably the best experience and value in the genre, but Nuclear Throne is still a decent game.
Nuclear Throne is a classic roguelike which eschews complex stat and item systems for a lean, streamlined barrage of nonstop bullet-hell violence. There's very little fat on the game, you start a run and almost right off the bat you are being shot at and your options are to either die, or respond in kind with an equal or greater hose-down of bullets. That's not to say there isn't depth, there is, but it's hidden behind deceptively simple systems. Compared to something like Isaac with it's hundreds of items and synergies, Nuclear Throne offers you items with abilities like "everything explodes" or "get more bullets" with the understanding that gameplay emerges from the way these powerful but simple abilities interaction with your decision making. There are plenty of secrets and interactions, but they're not difficult to understand or remember (hit this object with this weapon, open that door with this key). Character variety is good, and despite being light on plot the inhabitants of the world are given surprising amount of character through things like environment details, voice lines, gameplay loops and even loading screen blurbs. Even 10 years on the playable hopefuls remain a charming group of underdogs. Vlambeer was, for a time, the champion of cutting away flab from genres and getting to their very core. Nuclear Throne is a fruit of that process and for those who like roguelikes or high aggression games it remains, in my opinion, a must-play.
