Lacks direction and a few bugs some of these aren't games
An horror anthology that could be telling of someones mind. Each note representing a game version of someones thoughts inside from a diary. Each note/chapter telling a short story. Some weren't as good as others. I'd say: Just A Peep, I Think I Hit Something and Don't Look Up, being more of a short interaction experience. With far to little gameplay. The games' steam page claims 8 short stories. I'm not sure about Alone/White Canvas being a separate game. It's just another micro chapter of SplitScreen. An interesting brief experience. I don't mind it, for a fair price. I'd wait until there's a good discount. Recommend it.
So, this is of course a personal and subjective take on what I played so far. BUT this is GOOD. And I mean in the sense that you feel creeped out and tensed all the time, and not in a lame jumpscare-sense. The game just does the trick, by making you nervous. I would like to congratulate the dev for this and HIGHLY recommend this collection.
Overthinking an overthinker
Comprised of eight short stories, and being about the closest thing you could get to paging through a high schooler's sketchbook, Notebook Entries Vol. 1 is an appropriately-named horror anthology created by solo developer anOVERTHINKER. It's experimental and a little rough, but there are some experiences that stand out above others. Here are my own notebook entries on each. SplitScreen The game puts its best foot forward with what might be the strongest short of the bunch. Following some expository dialogue, SplitScreen drops you into a dimly-lit suburban house with little more than your phone's night vision camera to guide you. The mechanic is implemented well, and the atmosphere is overall sinister and claustrophobic. 8/10 Alone/White Canvas The transition between games was so seamless I didn't even realize this was a seperate entry at first, but Alone/White Canvas acts as a sort of continuation of the previous story. It's short, but does some neat stuff with sound. Not much to say about this one though, feels like a 3D version of Dark Echo. 5/10 Just a Peep You may be watching, but who knows who - or what - is watching back. Very unsettling horror short, set in a subtlety uncanny dystopian world. 8/10 Intermission Intermission? More like InSCRYPTION. It's Inscryption but with poorly communicated mechanics. Overall felt a little nauseating control-wise and wasn't particularly fun to play. 2/10 I Think I Hit Something A drive through a spooky forest at night? When has that ever gone wrong? Some advice for both the protagonist of this short and you, the reader of this review: it's not worth stopping for this one. Pretty mid. 4/10 don't look UP Quentin Tarantino's wet dream, nightmare for almost everyone else. This one was likely the weakest game of the bunch, though it did make me laugh out loud so probs worth a play just for the unintentional comedy factor alone. Angsty to the max but very hard to take seriously. 2/10 Repeat. Repeat. Compulsion. This one had very unique presentation, and although it was arguably style over substance it was conceptually cool,
operating as a text adventure/quicktime event simulator where most - if not all - action was implied rather than shown
. Though feeling like it somewhat lacked thematic nuance and resembling more of a proof of concept than a polished experience, Repeat. Repeat. Compulsion. was one of the m[ore interesting entries to the anthology. 6/10 a Sheep's Gun Somehow more entertaining than YouTube police bodycam videos, and I binge those things like crazy. Pretty unique presentation and concept for sure. Also the second biggest laugh I got out of this game, the backup squad's dialogue was (likely unintentionally) hilarious. 8/10 So, a mixed bag, but unpolished as Notebook Entries Vol. 1 is, it certainly has a good amount of charm and introduces some interesting concepts that justify the price of admission. 5.5/10
