Nice.
Nikoderiko is simply an absolutely delightful game. It's bursting with character, charm, and fun. It is absolutely strongly inspired by donkey kong country and even crash bandicoot but absolutely in a great way. The platforming is tight, the collectibles and bonus rooms are fun to find, and the music by David Wise is simply fantastic. I love the track that plays when you complete a level. It's very catchy, and the main characters even do a little dance which always made me smile. As far as criticisms, the only thing I would say is that the 3d crash-like sections are pretty shallow and are not nearly as fleshed out as the 2d ones. While the 2d platforming is definitely the main focus, I enjoyed the fact they had the 3d sections every once in a while to shake things up. I just wish there was a little more to them. Overall, the game is terrific. If you love the donkey kong country games, this game stands alongside them strongly in my opinion. The difficulty is balanced and the level design makes great use of the game's mechanics. I can't wait to see what these developers make next!
While some parts of the game are really beautiful, the artstyle of the game isn't really my thing. They went for a kids cartoon style more than something that goes for a general public I'd say. I feel not many world are that memorable in their environmenents, everything looks a bit samey but the lighing and hsadows look great. The dialogues are kinda cringe, the jokes are more miss than hit, the storyline is vapid. The protagonist is just dumb and greedy. Every NPC that speaks to you uses incomplete sentences, Cro-Magnon style. Nothing much to brag about. The gameplay is tight and responsive while on foot, you can slide and glide, really enjoyable. On the other hand, navigating underwater can be quite frustrating. And the animals you get as companions are very clunky with delayed or angled attacks. You can obviously see a lot of influences from Donkey Kong Country. It's basically a love letter to the these classic platformers with the Niko letters, the bonus barrels and the bonus themselves, the companions in boxes, some boss mechanics, etc. Talking about bosses, a lot of them have interesting mechanics and are pretty cool but most of them are also pretty easy. With David Wise being the composer, you can rest assured that the soundtrack is top of the line. I may have an old computer, but for that kind of game and for the other games I can run, it is kinda badly optimized with hard frame drops and long loading times for some reasons. While it's better than just mediocre, it's not a masterpiece either. It's still enjoyable and if I could give a neutral review, I would, but I will go with a positive one because it's more good than bad in overall. Softly recommended to anyone who really enjoys any kind of platformer.
Tries to be a Donkey Kong Country but sadly is not as fun as or even half as fan as the Snes series of DKC . Bad things: controls are not crisp enough even with controller and, it takes some of the more gimmicky DKC3 3D bossfights (aka snow fight) and mine kart level designed levels far too often. First boss is already turning the game into a shoot em up instead of Jump N run (platformer) with 3 health bars instead of 1. reminds a bit of the hit n miss version of the Wii days with "returns" and the last pesky plumber boss that ruined almost the rest of a decent game. Also: even though there are 2 playable characters there is not much difference in moves or special abilities. If we compare it (yet again) to the classics Every Playable Kong had their own ability and move N jump speed etc. Good things: Dixie Kong style character and her fly-ey hair move is implemented , also the reptile enemies even though not Kremlin Krocs are snake like cobraT creatures so close enough. Soundtrack is similar enough to the "donkey" series so if you liked that, even if not memorable as the inspiration of that music it has still itS moments. Maybe the review will be updated later but as for now it is not so much fun for this platformer , especially since the games that came out in the 90s. For another example Kirby or Yoshi s Island had already better movement control and "gimmicks" that were more original and "just worked". Nikoderiko on the other hand had multiple decades to improve on those games and yes to repeat it once again Donkey Kong Country 1,2,3 made the formula work better without going over board without overdoing the salt farming trial and error parts. (even without the nostalgia glasses on the mine kart levels were better designed in older games)
Super Crash Kong Bandicoot Country 3D Land. If that sounds exciting, buy this. If it sounds like nonsense, or just unappealing, probably just skip this one. If you are looking for a first video game for your children, this is an EXCELLENT choice. It's charming, colorful, good-natured, easy, and does a good job of directing the player without needing to read or go through a boring tutorial.
