We’re back in the distant Past, when “Rock & Roll” was just about rocks and “Fast food”, a dinner that you couldn’t catch. 2 cave dudes named Joe & Mac live in a peaceful and cool village. Cool it was, until a bogus bunch of Neanderthal snatched all the village’s women!

Small 2d platformer and really short experience its a middle one nothing really great here but also not bad: Pros: + ok soundtrack + boss designs are great + exteded mode is a great welcome here to make the levels longer + boss rush if you enjoy the bosses + extended mode feels much better than the classic mode better divides on enemies Cons: - way to short for its price wait for a 90% sale (its only 15-20 mins long and the long version 30-45 mins) - the throwing and jumping physics is not my thing a bit too stiff - some range weapons feels a little bit useless compared to others - classic mode the only way to go for the achievements, is not well most people gets a little worse experience because they need to play that mode Actually its more of a mixed thing for this game for me but i learn a little bit more on the positive side than the negative. Its ok nothing special at all!
This game is truly horrid in every sense of the word. Awful physics, awful responsivness, awful graphis. Just a truly, truly terrible game all around. This game would have no attention to it whatsoever if it wasn't for its blatant butchering of the Joe & Mac name. If you're a fan of the original, do yourself a HUGE favor and play that instead of this D-tier rendition of it. Not worth the time or money to experience the sad, dreadful downfall of this nostalgic classic. For shame.
Good remake! https://youtu.be/wsAH-LQHfaw?si=u9IKbUSmyZdBSVCl
New Joe & Mac – Caveman Ninja is a modern reimagining of the classic arcade platformer, rebuilt by Mr. Nutz Studio and published by Microids with clear affection for the 1991 original. It doesn’t try to reinvent the formula so much as to preserve the spirit of a bygone era: fast-paced side-scrolling, punishing enemy patterns, oversized prehistoric bosses, and a lighthearted rescue plot that sets the stage for nonstop action. At its core, the game revolves around two cavemen—Joe and Mac—on a quest to save kidnapped villagers. The narrative remains deliberately simple, acting as little more than an excuse to propel players through colorful prehistoric landscapes filled with dinosaurs, rival tribes, and unpredictable hazards. The structure faithfully mirrors the arcade roots, and that dedication becomes the defining philosophy of the remake. The most immediate improvement over the original is the visual overhaul. New Joe & Mac features entirely hand-drawn HD artwork, giving each level a cartoonish vibrancy and personality that recalls Saturday-morning animation. Characters are expressive, environments are lush, and enemies burst onto the screen with exaggerated motion. The game embraces a bright, playful aesthetic that enhances the charm of its prehistoric world. Boss encounters, in particular, benefit from the updated art direction—they are large, detailed, and imposing without feeling grotesque, and their animations help communicate attack patterns more clearly than in earlier versions. While the artwork is undeniably appealing, some movements and transitions retain a stiffness inherited from retro titles, and certain animations feel more functional than fluid. Even so, the visual presentation remains one of the remake’s standout qualities. Gameplay stays tightly connected to its arcade lineage. Levels are straightforward treks across hostile terrain, filled with platforming segments, swarms of enemies, and weapon pickups that offer different attack styles. You gather food to counter the returning hunger meter—a mechanic that causes your health to drain over time—and use weapons such as bones, fire blasts, boomerangs, or stone wheels to clear threats. The combat is responsive and satisfying when you get into rhythm, but the game’s decision to maintain the punishing difficulty of the original makes the experience demanding. Enemies often appear from off-screen, damage output can be high, and checkpoints are spaced in ways that encourage memorization rather than improvisation. Death comes quickly and often, especially for players approaching it with expectations shaped by modern action-platformers. There are, however, meaningful expansions beyond the arcade mode. The new Extend Mode offers longer levels that reimagine sections of the original campaign, while Speedrun Mode and Boss Rush give experienced players alternative ways to test their skill. Local co-op is also included and remains one of the best ways to experience the game. Playing with a friend softens the sharp edges of difficulty and restores the chaotic, cooperative energy that defined many early ’90s arcade cabinets. New Joe & Mac is built with couch multiplayer in mind—reviving each other, sharing pickups, and reacting to boss patterns together feels like the remake’s most natural state. Despite these strengths, the game has limitations that stem from its strict loyalty to the source material. The difficulty can feel more punishing than satisfying, especially for players unaccustomed to arcade-style hitboxes and enemy behavior. The hunger meter—while an iconic part of the original—remains divisive because it forces constant movement and interrupts careful exploration. The limited number of levels and linear stage progression may also leave players wanting more content or variety. Additionally, some gameplay elements feel dated, not because the developers executed them poorly, but because they are intentionally preserved design quirks from a much older era. The remake’s fidelity, while admirable, means it inherits both the strengths and weaknesses of its inspiration. New Joe & Mac – Caveman Ninja ultimately succeeds as a nostalgic revival rather than a fully modern reinterpretation. It thrives when embraced on its own terms: a challenging, vibrant homage to early arcade platformers that prioritizes spectacle, timing, and pattern recognition over modern conveniences. Fans of the original will likely appreciate how closely the spirit of the game has been preserved, enhanced with sharper visuals and new ways to replay familiar content. Players seeking a friendly, forgiving platformer, however, may find the difficulty spikes and old-school quirks more frustrating than endearing. In the end, the game stands as a lovingly crafted tribute to a classic. Its colorful presentation, commitment to arcade challenge, and co-op fun make it a strong choice for players who enjoy retro design and don’t mind a steep learning curve. It may not convert newcomers to the franchise, but it offers a spirited, energetic adventure for those ready to dive back into a prehistoric world where reflexes, patience, and a bit of nostalgia go a long way. Rating: 5/10
