It's . . . fine. The gameplay and art direction are as great as ever and being able to play a bunch of random levels that incentivize getting to use different bombs, shots, and accessories is fun, but it's just not really much of a rogue-lite. You only unlock new accessory sets and there's just not really anything to work for. Runs are too short with no option for endless ones, each run starts with the exact same level in lieu of a random one, and the end bosses are the same every time you do them too. This could have been a really fun little rogue-lite without these bizarre choices, but instead it just feels like a missed opportunity, even if I still like the gameplay a good deal.
A little too barebones. Just pickup the original game. Also unsure why we must play through the same intro level every time a seed is started, totally ruins the "random" run feel
The mechanics fit twin shooter games, so playing with a gamepad is recommended because you use the left stick to move and the right stick to fire. If you want to make things less strenuous for your fingers, you can turn on auto aim and auto fire. Although you control one character, you are accompanied by a doll that mimics your every move, which practically gives you twice the firepower. Unlike the doll, which cannot be hit and can even be used to block bullets and crash into enemies, you will take damage. However, you can take a couple of hits before losing one of your lives. To stay out of harm’s way for as long as possible, you have a dash that gives you invincibility for the duration of the movement, and a super trigger that greatly boosts both characters’ damage output, firing speed, or other effects. However, these abilities come with a limited number of charges per stage. On the other hand, the dash is very useful and can be used in quick succession. That is all the basics you need to know because the rest comes from roguelite mechanics. Before heading out on a run, you can pick your starting weapon and accessory set. These sets include several preset accessories, and although you do not have many sets at the beginning, you will unlock more by simply playing a lot of runs. A run consists of a series of stages where the main goal is to defeat enemies and collect enough souls to reach the one hundred percent requirement. The stage will not end before that, and if you cannot gather enough souls in the first pass through a stage, you will loop and try again with slightly tougher enemies. This continues until you reach the required amount and instantly finish the stage. After that, you can pick your next stage from a random selection of two. Your choice matters because each stage is tied to a new accessory. You receive the accessory immediately, and there is no guesswork involved because you can see the exact effect. Some examples include increased firepower, a magnet that attracts souls, and a perk that lets the doll fire forward and backward at the same time. You can also change your doll’s weapon and triggers. Again, you choose between two options, but the first one is your current equipment while the second is a new one. The more stages you complete, the higher the chance that an upgraded weapon will appear. This is not always a priority because not all weapons are useful in every situation. Accessories can also appear at higher levels, but your decision depends on your playstyle and the alternative reward from the other stage. Your first run takes place on a low difficulty, and there is a high chance that you will reach the end. However, this only unlocks one of the endings. To see the rest, you have to beat the game several times. There are also certain conditions you must meet to fight the boss and reveal the true final boss. Overall, the game is a fun and chaotic shooter but does not have a lot of depth. There are not many different stages, and there is limited variety outside of the different starting accessory sets. You can make things easier or harder by randomizing letters before the start of a run, but it is best to play only a few runs per session before the experience starts to feel repetitive.
NeverAwake Flashback is amazing ❤︎ [Eng and Pt-Br review]
I'd like to say that I love this game and the wait was totally worth it! The shmup universe can be a bit hardcore for those who aren't used to it, but the NeverAwake series is incredible because, among other things, it manages to balance challenge, difficulty, fun, plot, good music and pure art all in one game. And I must tell you that few games manage to do that, NeverAwake pleases all audiences in the world because it has a little bit of what each person will like. NeverAwake Flashback is a pure roguelike (you don't get stronger with each run, no permanent upgrades, but you unlock new sets of items) where you need to complete stages collecting the points (souls) that enemies drop, many times you will loop through the stages to collect the necessary amount of soul and that's really cool because it doesn't punish those who don't play perfectly, each stage also doesn't usually last more than 3-5 minutes and each run lasts about 20 minutes at most. The game is actually a twinstick shooter; you control your character with one stick and the direction of your shot with the other. The game takes full advantage of this because enemies can come from all sides, and the stages completely explore the screen. It's quite fun. You also have a trigger (like a bomb) that you choose for each new stage, in addition to an upgrade as a reward. You are also given two stage options: an easier one (left) and a harder one (right). The new auto-aim is very useful, as it allows you to manipulate Gabe-chan better; he's your option and can absorb bullets. The game works with a seed system (codes) made up of 3 letters, and you can choose any of them to get the difficulty you want. This is really cool because the game changes completely depending on the difficulty, but none of this keeps you from the true final boss. To get that, you just need 3 conditions: be fast, get the max combo, and completely kill a boss (bosses drop souls, so you usually finish the stage before defeating the boss completely; just avoid filling up the souls until you defeat him). Now, regarding the plot, art, and music. Most of the music is reused from the first game, which isn't a problem, as are the enemies, as well as a large part of the scenery assets, but that's okay, the game is cheap and has plenty of content. The music and art of NeverAwake are beautiful!!! If you like mystical and more artistic games, you'll love it! The plot is also very good; I would say that you should play Flashback after finishing the main game, but nothing prevents you from doing the opposite. Flashback shows a more normal and cute side of Rem, which I was very happy to see! Because the game focuses on her fears, seeing Rem happy and with her family was very rewarding! I must also say that this game has the best credit sequence ever made in history! I've already gotten all the endings and finished the game more than 10 times, but I just can't skip the little cutscenes and the music during the credits, they're the grooviest credits in the world! I love this game and I'm sure you will too! ❤︎

NeverAwake Flashback é incrível ❤︎ [Eng and Pt-Br review]
I absolutely loved the original and I love this prequel. Gabe-chan's blocking ability is super fun. Lightweight roguelike mechanics work nicely. There's interplay between clearing fast and hanging out to get better multipliers. I hope to see more options and unlockables in future updates. But even now, I highly recommend this title!
