This game is best described as a spin-off / epilogue of NeverAwake. To make this clear from the get-go : This product is aimed for players of the original who want a more arcade experience. It will alienate peoples looking for large amount of contents, and will make no effort to hide it
While it still keep the design philosophy of appealing to both the general public and arcade enthusiasts, it is also far less compromising for the former. This is what it means in practice. The game will provide all the tools necessary to be completable by players of all skills level, to the point that every achievements could be accomplished by someone trying out the genre for the first time. Despite that, at no point does it remotely feel like hand-holding, even ditching the classic "continue" system that exist in virtually every arcade games. However, the true appeal is the scoring system. While it also existed in the previous NeverAwake, it was restricted to individual levels, and each would take too long to become interesting. FLASHBACK solve this issue with the addition of difficulties level (Low, Middle, High, Super High, Ultra High), as well as dynamic rank difficulty, and tweak the levels to be overall faster paced. The scoring was also modified to encourage the player to be more pro-active : instead of being mainly based on the number of loops (=staying in a stage long enough for it to loop), it use a different multiplayer rate that increase with the use of the newly added sub-weapon Gabe-chan, and certain trigger accessory. In addition, in order to ensure runs doesn't take too long because of infinite milking, a timer of 20min is imposed, disallowing scoring past that. Peoples who are interested in the game's setting and story should temper their expectation, as FLASHBACK is an epilogue to the previous game's main ending, and ultimately serve as an excuse plot. You could experience the essential of it in about 2-5 sessions, each taking between 10-20min. With that in mind, the whole game can be considered finished in 1h30.
The original NeverAwake is an excellent—and, in my opinion, underrated—game. Its mechanics, aesthetic, and narrative all work together beautifully. NeverAwake Flashback, however, feels more like a soft remix than a true follow-up, and it should have been handled differently. This should have been either a $5.99 DLC featuring extra modes built mostly from existing content (which is essentially what this is), or a free update released for the game’s three-year anniversary. To the developers’ credit, Flashback is priced lower than the original, but that alone doesn’t make this approach feel acceptable—especially given the original's (undeserved yet prevalent) lukewarm reception. What would have justified the price tag here was a meaningful refresh of the assets—at least three-fifths of them. Instead, it appears that nearly every enemy and boss (easily 90% or more) has been copied & pasted directly from the original. The only noticeably different in-game asset are game's currency, “souls,” and they look objectively worse than the original version. Taken on its own, NeverAwake Flashback is competently made and fun to play, but when viewed alongside its predecessor, it comes across as a shameless cash grab: almost all assets are reused, with only a handful of new still images added for the game’s various “endings.” And speaking of those “endings”: the narrative here is effectively nonexistent. What the game calls endings are simply random outcome screens determined by which variation of the same ~20 levels (10 of which can be selected) that comprise a single play through. Without a beginning or middle, these shouldn’t really be called endings at all. Unlike the original—which used brief text blurbs and slides to provide narrative context—Flashback offers none of that, aside from aforementioned two slides explaining the final result (which only adds confusion for players unfamiliar to the original. might as well have left them out!). As a result, the game will have little to no narrative meaning for anyone who hasn’t already played the original—yet another reason this should have been DLC. Mechanically, the gameplay is familiar but simplified (inventory and weapons options have been "streamlined" at the expense of player-choice). “Easy” mode roughly matches the difficulty of the original NeverAwake (which most considered TOO easy although it was "just right" for me), while “Medium” is about 1.75× harder—challenging for players like me (that love and suck at SCMUP\twin-stick shooters), but still likely trivial for genre veterans. NeverAwake Flashback isn’t a bad game—in fact, it’s perfectly SERVICABLE moment to moment. But enjoyment alone doesn’t justify its existence as a standalone release or its price-tag. With a bare minimum of new content, heavily reused assets, , watered-down mechanics, and a stripped-down narrative, this feels less like a celebration of NeverAwake and more like a missed opportunity. If you loved the original and just want more of the same, you may find some value here. Otherwise, this should have been DLC or a free anniversary update—not a separate product competing with its own predecessor. I would only recommend this to individuals who have not played the first game, have no interest in the narrative or inventory management, and are only seeking mindless, cool-looking fun with a yami-kawaii aesthetic.
