About
Never Second in Rome is a turn-based historical game with RPG and management elements. You take the role of a Roman centurion in the army of Julius Caesar.
In a Republic dominating the Mediterranean World and yet shaken by internal strife, still traumatized by the horrors of the civil war that marked the previous generation, the arrival of a new governor in your province will initiate a succession of events that will ultimately define the future of Rome and its empire.
Starting right before the beginning of the Gallic War, you will assume command of a century in a newly raised legion.
In addition to the main character, you will control the small army unit in your charge, your century.
Train yourself and your century, appoint your staff and discover the most remarkable individuals at your service.
Fight and lead your legionaries in real historical battles relying on a complex system of intertwined stats.
Turn-based individual combat involving not only your main character, but also the soldiers under your command.
Text-based events and narrative sections with many Attribute and Skill checks.
Great care and attention to historical detail and accuracy.
You can download and play the free demo directly on Steam. It allows you to explore the first three chapters of the game at your own pace. I recommend trying it before you buy, it's the best way to find out whether this game is up your alley.

Honestly a unique game that rules all while trying to maintain its historical accuracy and person feel, all made by a lone dev! Great gameplay Great immersion Unique systems Excellent price Absolutely reccommend if you're a nerd who cant help but think about the Roman Empire at least once a day
Bought this game during early access as I played the dev's first game, a legionary's life, and enjoyed that experience. When I heard they were making a sequel I followed the development closely and jumped straight into buy the early access and was not disappointed. The game offers very in depth character building for the player character, the century and specific individuals and encourages experimentation into different builds to get the best from certain skill checks. The game also encourages you to run the numbers and recognise the patterns of the in game training system in order to create the best training program in order to improve your unit as a whole as well as the characters within it. I also think the story is very well written despite that it being based on history, and are a history buff like me, you know how the overarching story will play out but gives you a truly realistic recollection of how a centurion in Caesar's army might have acted and responded to the events that they come up against. The developer is also committed to updating and balancing the game to maintain a fair but firm experience as well as allowing for a whole new experience to be offered with the roguelike/ hardcore mode allowing for incremental improvements to the player character over many more playthroughs, similar to the previous game. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this game to anyone that A) loves history or B) likes classic RPG gameplay of building and roleplaying a character.
What a brilliant game! After spending hours playing A Legionary's Tale, I've always wondered what it would be like to start the game as an officer fighting low-level troops. This game has lots of depth and the story is amazingly well written, highly recommended!
A fun experience but the Dev dont seem to fully understand why some of us loved the first game. I do recommend it. but if you fell in love with the meta progression in the first game. You wont find it here. There is a ironman mode that has it, but it's locked behind doing a full campaign, and doing this campaign does not give you any starting points. so you start back at 0 If the dev reads this. just give ironman from the start.
I cannot in good faith recommend this game right now. I'm only retaining it because I think it could be good in the future if the developer works towards repairing a lot of the underlying systems. Unit Combat: Very flat, very few decision. You move a slider back and forth depending on how aggressive you want your forces to be. There is absolutely no reason to choose anything below Steadfast, going below it just leads to your troops getting slaughtered. There's no tactics or strategy, its just "move slider up for attack, move slider down for defense(kind of)". If you station your character at the front of the formation they tick up fatigue, and there is no way to reduce fatigue in group or individual combat. So, by the end of each battle phase you have to recall your character to the rear, but then they get debuffs for being cowardly(even when they are literally collapsing from exhaustion. And the cowardice bar isn't even linear, its one level for being at the front, and two for being at the rear. Individual Combat: Honestly the facet of the game that I got sick of within one hour. In theory you're supposed to balance your character's attributes with the enemies weakness, and their strengths with your weaknesses, and fight a back and forth duel. In reality, you slaughter your first opponent, get winded by your second or third, and can't do anything but spam defense. And even then, the AI doesn't attack you unless you are completely overmatched, otherwise they just spam recovery and defense. As soon as you're winded, you're done. If your fatigue hits 200, you cannot fight in duels, but there is no option to disengage or at least catch your breath. You just have to click through it until it finally, mercifully ends. I want this game to be good but serious changes need to be made.
Excellent history. Solid Gameplay.
A pretty nifty recounting of the Gallic Wars with you taking the role of a centurian. It is a very original game with a steep learning curve but really well thought out and balancd mechanics.
Can't believe I didn't give this game a review before. It's loads of fun whether you want to go through once or twice as a story based player who wants an immersive military rome simulator with decisions that affect how you operate in the ranks of a legion, or you are a combat focused player who enjoys a very tough challenge for the ambitious, that can be played many times over, you are in for an awesome experience regardless. Pick up the game, you won't regret it, unless you are against a lot of reading, because this game has an incredible set of descriptions for scenery, combat, and politics.
Great Continuation from the last game with a much grander scope.
be a Caesar´s centurion. Enjoy the day to day of a legion.
