Multiple forms of metaprogression is a pretty big thing to see for a game that cost me a dollar. Frequent unlocks keep you interested in the first few hours, and I admire the neon aesthetics. Despite the dozen ships, dozen levels, and two dozen modifiers, once you understand the game, you start to realize that it's lacking in run diversity. It became apparent that some of the design decisions hold back playability and replayability. Still, to find 10 hours of enjoyment to 100% a game that cost only pennies shouldn't be taken lightly.
Quick in-and-out action with a bit of meta-progression to give you something to look forward to. The simple visuals are highly polished, and there's plenty of effort in the sound design. The real charm is the power-up system, though. Power-up cards individually give you better stats or new weapons, and some are better than others. But if you max out two card types, they'll sometimes combine into a powerful "synergy" card netting you a whole new ability type. You can get everything from barrages of homing missiles that shoot smaller missiles, to a dash that launches a paralyzing shockwave. And even the more "useless" cards have their potential - maxing out the knockback and bullet size cards gives you a synergy that outright doubles your damage. I don't imagine this is something you'd dump hundreds of hours into, but it's a fun way to spend a weekend or two, and it's plenty of entertainment for the price.
It's pretty good, the controller support is very weird, wouldn't recommend playing with a controller
bright colors and shooting guns make brain happy
horrible, cheap, unfun grind fest. looks pretty though.
The game has three meta-currencies that drop randomly from mid-tier and higher enemies. The upgrades in battle don't appear to be weighted at all towards either your chosen ship or your build. I had to mute the music because even at the lowest level in the options, it was still much too loud (and not good enough that it warranted me going into the volume mixer to fiddle with it). They use the visual style (neon shapes) as an excuse for them not to have detail on your ships or most of the enemies. While the arenas do have some variety, it's only in the types of enemies or in restrictions to what upgrades you can pick. The win condition in all of them is the same - survive for 10 minutes. In the majority of cases, the ship upgrades do not scale well enough to keep up with the enemy waves having more and more enemies that get more and more HP. So in most cases you'll have to pick specific ships with specific upgrades to be able survived the designated time. I really wanted to like this game, but the only times I play it are after it's been long enough that I forgot just how frustrating and grindy the game is. Did I mention there are three meta-currencies?
