[th] Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam. [/th]
Is this game a masterpiece? No, not really. It is just a little puzzle game inspired by Pikmin. You are an arrogant little Necromancer controlling a bunch of raised Necrominions and order them to do simple tasks to help you advance through a large tomb full of closed doors. You are too lazy to even pull a switch or do anything at all, except commanding your minions around and annoying the only Necrominion that stays by your side during the whole game (your servant Lackey) with megalomaniacal speeches. All other Necrominions are gone whenever you solve a puzzle and go to the next room... so you have to find new minions. No idea why you just can't take them with you if you have already resurrected them? Anyway, if you like Pikmin clones and have already played the more complex Overlord, Kena, Okhlos, Ray's The Dead or The Wild at Heart, you may enjoy Necroboy as well. Conclusion: Little puzzle game using Pikmin mechanics.

If you follow my reviews for a while you know that I love games in which you control minions to do your work. I can't explain why I love it, but I just do. I had a lot of fun with Necroboy, but it is a bit rough around the edges. In Necroboy you only solve puzzles with the minions, not attacking. This is fine in my book, that way you don't see how the minions die in a sad way like in Pikmin for example. The puzzles start out quite easy but ramp up during the game... and then there are those "strange levels"(you can find the entrances to those levels at the beginning of levels 9, 18, and 26). Those levels are on a totally different planet and I wasn't able to solve those puzzles, they just went above my head. I hope that the game will get some extra quality-of-life features like being able to select one minion, now it is a bit annoying that if you want one you have to put them all to "sleep" (Is it really sleep?) and then try to only wake up one. That is one of the more challenging aspects of the game that seems not needed and can become a bit frustrating later on. None of the achievements are missable. Almost all of them you'll just get by playing through the game. the most challenging ones are those for completing the strange levels, and with that, the achievement for the skins as you'll find skins in those levels. I think that unlocking them all may take around 6h if you are good at solving this kind of puzzles or when using a guide, otherwise, it may take a little bit longer. I had a lot of fun with Necroboy: Path to Evilship. I hope someone can solve those "Strange" levels so I can go back into this game and get the last few achievements I'm missing.
Puzzle adventure + variety of puzzles + unique = A casual deadly puzzle. Revive necrominions to do your bidding in solving puzzles. Send them out or call them back. Would be cool if they could dance.
Pick this up for your kid, maybe, if it's on sale for less than $10? Or just go use that $10 on gamepass and play a lot of puzzle games way better than this one. All the levels look identical, and all the puzzles are either pushing blocks or opening doors with switches. The minion AI gets stuck on itself and the environment with regularity, and that is capable of soft locking you from a level to the point you just gotta start it over, which is nuts consider once again all the puzzles are pushing blocks or flipping switches and the minions can only perform the two simple actions of push and pull. The "boss fights" are just you playing the same generic puzzles as prior that raises a red minion that one hits the "boss" and you move on, creating no real challenge for the player. The only real challenging puzzles are the secret levels, but it's still more of the same with a black and white filter on the level. The story? There is one: a selfish necromancer child with a little too much conscience to hurt the living, but not enough to stop him from raising the dead. He wants to takeover the crypt of his hero NecroMan, because queue sad sack story about being abandoned for his power and wanting revenge but, morals morals morals in the end. It's uninspired, and you'll likely find yourself wanting to skip it or just skipping it pretty early on as it doesn't really do much to progress anything in the game, it does however delay you from finishing it sooner (which is maybe gonna be a 4 hour experience if you also did the secret levels, I just couldn't be bothered for all the aforementioned reasons) as most the dailogue happens as the beginning of the levels. I love puzzle games, and games with puzzling elements, but this will never rise above being anything other than just a bad puzzle game available for way too high a price on Steam.

Or at least, he’ll make his NecroMinions do it for him. No violence in this game! NecroBoy is just a kid, godammit.
NecroBoy: Path to Evilship is a charming puzzle game with Pikman/Overlord-like mechanics dealing with control of minions. I'll admit that it didn't take me long before I realized that this game was not for me. My short playtime is indicative of how it's obvious that the game was tailored for another audience. I'll try to be as objective here as possible and I'll explain my reasoning for the negative review.
Story
So the game begins with an exposition about our protagonist, Necroboy, with his origin story. Basically he was abandoned in a forest in which he discovered his necromantic powers which the villagers feared. Now he seeks the powerful Necronoss, an artifact owned by the late Necromancer, in the crypts. You'll get hints of Necroboy feeling like an outcast and wanting to prove himself as a powerful being. The dialogue banter consists of back-and-forth bickering between Necroboy and his Lackey. Obvious from the start, Necroboy is the childish megalomaniac while the Lackey is the mature voice who's ignored. I'm not saying that the writing is terrible, but it really feels like it was intended for an audience of children.
Gameplay
So this game plays pretty much like Pikman or Overlord in that you resurrect minions and control them to solve puzzles. You have the ability to raise minions, freeze them, and shoot a bolt at objects to direct them. I'll be honest, the puzzles are extremely easy. This is another reason why I think the game panders towards a younger audience. The gist of what you'll do is shoot at levers for minions to pull, walk through doors, repeat. I got bored immediately once I realized that this was what the gameplay was. Let me say that the gameplay works decently in that the minion pathing is well done and the ability to shoot what you want them to activate is cool in itself. A couple of nitpicks I would say are: *Camera sensitivity feels so awkward and low *You cannot select one minion at a time, so you'd need to freeze all other minions to make sure only one moves.
Art & Sound
I think the artstyle is rather charming in its cartoonish way. It gives off that Halloween For Kids vibes that people may or may not enjoy. This is emphasized further by its spooky Halloween music.
Verdict
Okay so the game just seems to be made with children in mind. So what's wrong with it? Well I would've been much more lenient if the game did not cost $19.99 USD which is pretty steep for a game I'd buy for a 5th grader. Simply put, I would only recommend this game if the price went down under $10 and if you wanted to give your kids something Halloween and easy.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
