Nebulous is a physics-based puzzle game where you must help guide Commander Dash Johnson, a trapped astronaut, through maze-like levels, seeking the next wormhole to his eventual freedom. Arrange the pieces so that when he falls, gravity guides him safely (and probably painfully) to the end!
What is Nebulous?
Nebulous is a physics-based puzzle game. The primary objective is to guide Commander Dash Johnson through maze-like levels to the next wormhole. In order to do this, you must arrange puzzle pieces so that gravity and momentum will work in his favor. As a result of the theme of the game and its character writing there is quite a substantial amount of humour involved in the script. It must be noted that the game has been developed as an Oculus Rift title. However, do you not need to own a VR device in order to play the game. Therefore the game does not have a 'must own' label on the Steam store page. You will be able to play with the keyboard and mouse or a controller instead.
Is it Better with Oculus Rift?
It would be ignorant of the technological capabilities of the Rift and the way in which the game has been designed to say no. The game is certainly better when using the Rift. That is how the game is intended to be made. The game design decisions that allow the game to be played both with VR and out of VR are intelligent. Players will have to remember that this was launched into Early Access immediately before the VR storm of 2016. The real question that needs to be asked then is whether the game is good enough to make it a worthwhile purchase for those who lack the technology. In my opinion having played with and without the use of VR the game itself loses quite a lot of its lustre without it. It feels overly generic and the design of the game's screens and menu systems have clearly been designed for VR. This will serve as a constant reminder to those who do not have the technology of what they are lacking. Therefore, it may be best to look elsewhere until you do have that technology.
The Humour
Commander Dash Johnson is a jerk. He has been written that way on purpose and it is made clear from the very beginning of the game. Unfortunately, I do not believe that the decision was an intelligent one. The objective of the game, after all, is to successfully guide him throughout each level. As a result of his banter, it makes me want to do the opposite. It puts me at constant odds with the game. I shouldn't want to fail levels just to see how the douche bag dies over and over again.
The Gameplay Mechanics
Nebulous reminds me of games such as Peggle, The Incredible Machine and even Bad Rats. It seems like a combination of these games and other puzzle games have served as the inspiration for the developers. This is both a blessing and a disguise. Again I am reminded of, in some cases, better games that don't possess a barrier of entry to gamers. As a result, the originality and uniqueness of the project appear to be in - most ways - the incorporation of VR technology. This is great for those that possess the technology but for those who don't may feel that they have been there before. A positive note of the mechanics is that the game does incorporate a large enough variety of mechanics that the puzzles never feel too alike. Players are not stuck doing the same thing on repeat. It must also be said that the multi-playfields is a nice touch. That is again experienced better in VR but is still a positive experience without and arguably the game's greatest strength.
Is it Steamified?
The developers are half way there. There are currently no Steam trading cards but there are 11 hidden Steam achievements. The global Steam leaderboard shows that only 6.9% of players have unlocked the first achievement while the rest are under 3% and there is still an achievement that nobody has unlocked.
Verdict
The implementation of VR in Nebulous is very well done. However, if you lack the technology and the means to play it in a VR setting then Nebulous is almost your run of the mill physics puzzle game. The most significant grievance that I have with the game is that the humor made me want to play counter to the primary objective in each level. This is never a good thing.
I don't think VR adds anything to this game. In fact, it's probably better played on a mobile phone. If this were a .99 cents game, I don't think I would rate negatively. It's an okay puzzle game with some funny voice one-liners. There is something funny about seeing an astronaut getting pummeled through puzzle obstacles. But at $14.99 it's just crazy for this type of 'puzzle game' if you can call it that. It's more like angry birds. Except the VR adds nothing, except clunky controls. I got it on sale for $5.09 USD and that's way too much still. Rating 3/10 content does not match price, but it would be a pretty good .99 cents mobile game if it were that
I have a few comments so far after playing briefly. First, when I left a level to return to the main screen and then went back in (level 3, if it matters) the music and sounds effects went silent. Second, change the controls to the more intuitive WASD. I'm already holding shift and hitting the space bar when I fail it's more natural to look around with A and D. I've only played a little, looking forward to more!
Nebulous is a quirky little casual puzzler. It has the capacity for VR, but that doesn’t get in the way of those who choose not to use, or cannot use, a VR headset. However, for what feels like a flashy version of a mobile game, $14.99 seems a bit steep. Read my full review at: http://sagrannusgaming.blogspot.com.au/2016/08/nebulous-review.html
protagonist is fun to torture
If you love really taxing or physics based puzzles, then you are going to enjoy Nebulous. But if you are looking for a relaxing puzzle game to occasionally boot up for the challenge, look somewhere else. Full review: http://pixelpopnetwork.com.au/2017/01/nebulous/
