I understand that many players are getting frustrated and leaving critical reviews because there is no tutorial besides a very basic one that doesn’t teach you how to do anything. If you invest time and try to work around the mechanics, you’ll find out that the game is very fun. Right now, I’ve got 42 hours of playtime recorded, and I’m not just judging by its cover. That said, they promised an update over a year ago, and we’re still waiting (they released it a year ago).
Meh doesn't really offer anything other zombie survival games aren't doing better. I see reviews comparing it to State of Decay 2 but it feels closer to Dead State, but even saying that is a stretch as with Dead State the characters are interesting, while State of Decay has heart pumping action. This game has neither. Not really sure why this game exists, it doesn't offer anything new or improved. Its story and characters are lack luster. Its gameplay is basic and dull. And the graphics could be overlooked if the game had 'heart' which it does not. I'd recommend skipping this game unless you see ALOT of content updates or you see it in a crazy 90% off steam sale. The whole experience was really dull :(
Game really needs a guide to its mechanics, seems so many things are missing and Im just not sure if its me not being able to find them. The Resolution doesnt seem to matter, its set by default at 640x480 Full Screen, and the UI seems to be set as if you are playing on that scale taking up far too much real estate. Changing the resolution to my monitors native resolution (2560x1440) didnt seem to make a difference though some in between make everything horribly blurred. Reloading the game reset the resolution. I was enjoying the game, for the first day, simply scavanging parts and some minor combat with zombies, but come night and then the following day the game made me wanna just switch off. The first day my guys took some damage when 6 zombies sprung out of the 1st house we looted. This left 1 survivor needing 1st aid the other 2 damaged, I gave the one needing 1st aid what was needed and continued on. Came around 8pm and got told they needed to go to shelter for the night, so I waited til they were done looting where we just cleared and took the supplies back to base, unloaded and sent them into the building. Then waited, waited, waited. There doesnt appear to be a way to fast forward time or skip to day time but nothing was happening, at 8am I got them out of the building (not sure if I just shouldve kept waiting here). Still as worse for wear as the previous day. I could not figure how I could heal them, so had 3 people that were less than 30% health. Maybe I went off script, the buildings and truck I looted were on the way to objective, and that meant I didnt learn those things, if not maybe extend the "tutorial" to include arming and healing and any other basic functions we need ie eating/drinking. I really want to like this game, its got the premise I was looking for. But having no clue how some simple mechanics work, even equipping a gun was guesswork, I just feel it needs some better information, even tooltips would be nice so we arent just gussing what a button will do.
Scratched an Itch
Picked this up during the spring sale for $6CAD, and do not regret it. Played almost 20 hours and beat it, so worth the investment. I see comparisons to State of Decay and Dead State. Both are relevant in their own way. You can see from the screenshots it looks like Dead State, and the SoD portion is from the base building aspect. You start with a few survivors, create a safe zone, explore the map. From there you get more survivors and resources to eventually make your stronghold better, while worrying about food, water, electricity and morale. Standard recipe, but tried and true. I enjoyed the indigenous spin on the genre. The game has a few glitches here and there, but nothing stood out as something I truly disliked. I see a lot of the complaints had been addressed over time. Are there moments with a bit of a glitch, sure, but not game breaking. Is the game made challenging by a lack of super clear instructions at times, sure. Nothing a google search or patience wouldn’t have sorted out though. Sound – It has what you would expect. I never found myself annoyed with the audio, but I wouldn’t buy the soundtrack either. Graphics – Fine for what it is. Again, nothing to set a new bar, but it didn’t take anything away from the game for me either. Gameplay – It plays like others in the genre. Find a vehicle, explore for resources and people. Upgrade vehicles and base. Rinse and repeat. HOWEVER, that is what I wanted. Being able to build out a base, upgrade survivors, pick my cars etc. You do not HAVE to do anything and get to spend as much or little time as you want on said upgrades and development. Replay Value – I wouldn’t say much. Once you beat it there isn’t much need to do it again. There is a survival mode though where you select survivors from your playthrough, a zone, and build/survive against increasing waves of enemies. I have not done that yet though. Story – For sure at times the dialogue is a bit cringy, or doesn’t feel natural as the other reviews say. That said, its still a good story. I enjoyed the indigenous spin, as I said, for the cause of the outbreak. The story gives you enough fuel to progress through the game, at your own pace. At the end of the day, would I have been as completely happy full price? Probably not. On sale though, I have zero complaints at all. I wanted a base building zombie survival and that is what I got. It took 20 hours of my time, and I don’t regret a single minute. I was doing that “just one more building” instead of sleeping, and looked forward to logging in each day until I beat it. If you like the genre, especially Dead State, and you get this on sale, you should be happy too.
