I just finished playing the fist hour of Nanoforce, and I must say, it's a game that truly delivers an exhilarating experience. One of the standout features for me was the ability to fly through organic beasties (a very nice and quality pixel art style). One aspect that really impressed me was the variety of weapons at your disposal. Nanoforce offers a wide range of weapons to choose from, each with its own distinct playstyle and strategic advantages. The four-button weapon system is intuitive and easy to use, allowing for seamless switching between different tools to tackle any situation that comes your way. What sets Nanoforce apart from other games is its emphasis on picking the right tools for specific scenarios. The environment plays a crucial role in determining your approach, and this dynamic element adds a layer of depth and strategy to the gameplay. It keeps you engaged and constantly thinking about the best course of action, which is truly refreshing. Oh, and I can't forget to mention the incredible bosses I've encountered! The game truly knows how to make the most of the screen space, providing epic encounters that are both visually stunning and challenging. The bosses utilize a combination of powerful weaponry and require both macro and micro dodging skills, keeping you on your toes throughout the battles. The attention to detail in designing the boss fights is commendable. While the sound effects in Nanoforce could benefit from some additional polish, it's a minor drawback in an otherwise exceptional game. The gameplay itself addictive and that easily makes up for any shortcomings in the audio department. Overall, Nanoforce is a high-quality game that I am genuinely excited about. It has that "just one more try" flavor that keeps you hooked for hours on end. With its innovative mechanics, diverse arsenal, and thrilling boss battles, I need to beat this game! Here is the first hour of my gameplay for (It's nice level of difficulty, where I am getting better on every run): https://youtu.be/tVELZZC2xR4
This is loads of fun. Shmup creator doesn't have very many exciting scoring mechanics (right now, they could be easily patched in), so I think this sort of oldschool style game with lots of set pieces and interesting stage design is definitely the way to go. You can tell how much effort has gone into this. It's great! The four different weapons reminds me a lot of dezatopia. Green mode adds a nice little twist where you're trying to keep the omni weapon for as long as possible by killing enemies and collecting green crystals.
If we could go back 20 years this would of been an absolute hit on the Dreamcast. Even the menus and font look period correct. 9/10. Not bad for a 1st outing. If anything else could be added to bring it up to 2023 standards it would be online leaderboards for each gamemode :)
++++++++++++++++++++
Sideways thumb. The powerups which change your weapon give you a lot of options: each has 4 different attacks depending on which button you press. You can end up changing your weapon multiple times over a very short period of time which I find disorientating. Each time this happens I have to re-learn what each new weapon does on 4 different buttons, and it just kind of throws me off the jibe and makes it feel like I'm re-adapting to the controls constantly as I play, rather than executing and having fun. The level design has had some effort put into it, barriers that need to be shot/avoided and such, this aspect is mostly good. There were times where enemies would appear on me without warning or I would find my ship being moved along very quickly. This is probably one of the better indie SHMUPS of the ones that I didn't like enough to want to play through it. You have a lot of continues but they do run out, forcing you to restart from the very beginning. I made it halfway through the game on my first (and only) run, though.
PLAY. DIE. EARN POINTS. - to quote the creator's own description of the Arcade Mode. It's brutal, but in a good way. It's lineage is from the classic memorizer shmups like R-type, Xexex and a host of others. The weapon system may seem daunting at first but you quickly adjust to it. Graphics are fantastic, and the music is also good.
A fantastic horizontal Shmup made with an incredible amount of passion. With a plethora of weapons, 3 unique modes, and an interesting story/setting, Nanoforce is good enough to stand tall beside some of this genre's best and most famous entries. Music, art, and sound effects are all top notch as well. The attention to detail in both the level design as well as the animations does a great job of highlighting the game's mix of machinery/tech with the organic fleshy tissue of the inside of a human body. While I personally am not a fan of dying in one hit, Nanoforce has a fair difficulty that can be mastered with enough practice. I am not the best at Shmups, so I'm glad that Nanoforce isn't insanely difficult while also not being insanely easy. It's a tough game, but the challenge never felt too daunting. At the time of writing, there are a few issues with some of the dialogue (both in screen placement and in spelling/grammar), but I have full confidence that the developer will patch these minor issues as soon as possible. Fantastic work!
tres bon jeu merci
