About
My Summer Love: Memories is a romantic visual novel that captures the aesthetics and nostalgia of 90s Full-Motion Video (FMV) games. But this is much more than a traditional dating simulator: here, you have total control over what you say.
Forget about choosing between three predetermined options on the screen. Thanks to the integration of Artificial Intelligence, you can converse with Yuna in a natural, spontaneous, and fluid way. Every single interaction is unique, reacting in real-time to your personality, your questions, and your answers, creating an immersive experience that changes with every playthrough.
Story Mode: Step into the shoes of someone who meets Kang Yuna, and together, experience a memorable summer of love.
Chat Mode: Converse freely with Kang Yuna with no scripts, total freedom, and no risk of a game over.
Custom Personality: Modify Kang Yuna's personality with a text description.
Persistent Memory: Kang Yuna remembers your previous conversations, creating a deeper and continuous connection.
Change Models: Change the underlying model with other Gemma 3 types to improve text generation performance.
Your privacy comes first. All language processing in My Summer Love: Memories runs completely locally on your computer.
No internet required: The game does not require a connection to external servers or third-party services.
Anonymous and private: Your conversations with Yuna stay on your hardware, guaranteeing a safe, secure, and private experience.
To create a game with these characteristics, the available game engines (such as Unreal, Ren'Py, or Unity) are not suitable. We needed absolute control over memory and multithreaded parallel processing capabilities to load videos in real time while dynamically generating text. Therefore, at Soul Shell, we developed our own engine, the RetroSense Engine, from scratch using C++ and the following open-source libraries:
SFML for multimedia management.
llama.cpp for the efficient execution of local Large Language Models (LLMs).
Dear ImGui for a clean and optimized development interface.

I played very few dating games. Sometimes the reason was that the protagonist came across as quite a moron, hard to identify with and even harder to imagine him getting any date of all, but more often it was because I could never get the girl I wanted. I finally had to use a guide which always left me wondering at the strange stuff I had to do or say to get her; and, of course, using a guide killed even that little suspense there is in such games. My Summer Love solves both problems. First of all, the protagonist is beautiful to look at and not only sensitive but a very stable genius as well – one wonders why he has to play such games at all. Also, a guide would be useless; you don't choose between A, B and C, you actually have to think how you would and will act or react in a real time frame. The process is complicated by the fact that the girl has a personality of her own, with her own memories and traumas which can become quite a problem: the suspense is therefore always there, even in a seemingly completely innocent scene. You can go back and replay an episode, of course, but while the scenes sequence is fixed what happens within them is not – a problem might disappear and another one appear, or nothing would change or there might be no problem at all. All of this adds to the replayability factor: even after you finished the game you will be left wondering about all the possibilities, good or bad, you missed along the way. So, the only really questionable part for me is the very end: I understand that the developer had to finish the game at some point but the game obviously calls for the second part and the second part would call for the third part and so on until you would get to a city builder. This is a relatively small game but it is an important one, because it shows what can be done with AI: the possibilities are endless. It was, of course, realized by an indie developer, as will be the others that will follow suit; then the big companies will notice the trend and they will come and make a complete mess out of it, but at least for a while I think we are safe.
The whole idea of ai powered personalities fascinates me. And i'm interested to see how far it can be taken and how complex it could become in the future. This is a one man developer game so it's not going to be cutting edge with all the fancy bells and whistles of a bigger budget game but i think what is here is done very well considering the constraints it must have been made under. Kang Yuna has her own personality so it's not just a case of answering the right questions in a particular order and boom you're a cassanova. You have to talk with her (about anything) explore her interests, and earn her trust before even thinking about trying to romance her unless you want to get shut down before you even started. You know?, like a real romance. Obviously it's not massively complex and there are some odd quirks like when she will randomly start recounting a bad memory that isn't even remotely related to the topic at hand and her negativity will shoot up making it difficult to avoid a game over if it happens early on in the chapter. But i enjoyed my time with the game and i'm interested to see just how far the technology might go.
Romance/dating sim You stop to help a beautiful Korean woman who has car trouble, then find she is deep, very intelligent, and charming as well. The love interest is powered by A.I., and has a personality that responds to your open ended messages. Overall, it was fun. I recommend this game if you like this genre. There were a couple of flaws. You will probably want to close as many applications as possible while running this game, otherwise it runs poorly. Still, there were no discernible bugs, and it ran well enough on my old laptop. I got couple of odd comments from the love interest. I recommend this game if you like this genre.
This is the future of video games; systems crafted by human hands and given near infinite possibility by the power of AI. These systems will never become dull or boring, will always adapt to become things you never even knew you wanted until they are there, presented complete to you, bells and whistles and all. The potential for such systems is truly staggering and it started right here in the guise of a romantic visual novel. Not saying it's perfect, but it's definitely a very confident first step in the right direction. What I would like to see is a chat history for the story mode of the game (it exports to a text log file, or even a CSV that can be imported into Excel) as some of the conversations Yuna and I have are frankly fascinating and it's a shame that those conversations are just lost (or stored in the memory files that we can't easily access, unless I'm misunderstanding something). Also, there are parts in the game where Yuna will say something that essentially means, 'We're going to the next scene now', but it's not phrased like that so you type in something that continues the conversation you've been having only to have the game jump straight to the 'loading' screen. When Yuna makes one of these 'We're going to the next scene' statements, there shouldn't be a text box for you to type in, it should just be a button saying 'Continue to next scene' so you don't waste your time typing in something that Yuna will never hear (or something along those lines). Maybe it's just me, but I like numbers and with the Positive and Negative emotion meter, I'd like there to be numbers with the percentage bars so I can quickly scan how I'm doing emotion-wise and not measure the percentage bar based on how close it is to certain letters above the bars. Or, if not numbers some kind of obvious increments so I can think, 'I have 4 blips on the positive emotion bar and only 1 blip on the negative'. It would also be interesting if there was a screen in the main story mode (maybe by pressing F1, F2, etc), during the normal game play, where you could see all Yuna's personality attributes like what you see at the end of each section, just letting you keep track of where you are with Yuna. Maybe even a thing where if you say something that Yuna doesn't like, and this creates negative emotions, you can skip back to before you made that statement (yes, cheating, I know). But, all in all, this game is incredible and it is highly replayable due to Yuna's complex personality (I'm using 'soob3123_amoral-gemma3-12B-v2-Q6_K_L.gguf' as her AI model). And, the fact that you can adapt/change her personality by editing her personality text file creates even more replayability and new personality sharing options between players (I haven't done that as I want Yuna to stay as the devs intended). The icing on the cake would be if the devs could somehow make the game have millions of little video slices that Yuna could then put together to make the FMV video nearly as unique as her text responses, or somehow make the game render Yuna in real time, though that would probably take some very serious hardware to achieve. One thing that does amuse me is (probably) due to the AI model I have installed on my system (it needs nearly 10gb of video ram), my computer is deadly quiet until I type something to Yuna, then her thinking makes my video card fans switch on until she's done, then they switch off. That's some serious thinking, Yuna :) So, well done and thank you to the dev team for making one of the most memorable games I think I have ever played. I'm definitely interested in where you're going next with these AI-based games, and make no mistake -- this, and games like this, will be the future of video games.
This is a wonderful story for all you romantics out there its truly beautiful well worth the money I would highly recommend it one hundred percent positive i look forward to more of this kind of genre truly excellent well done steam for adding it to your platform
