About

Introducing a fresh new chapter in the critically-acclaimed Muv-Luv saga! aNCHOR is proud to present Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Remastered, now officially available in English for the first time, with all the awesome action, heart-pounding music, and depression-inducing plot twists you’ve come to expect from a Muv-Luv game!
*Note that this release includes only the main game, and not the "Burning of the Imperial Capital" prelude story.
Total Eclipse is a stand-alone story that plays out alongside the events of Muv-Luv Alternative, showing another perspective of humanity’s grand war against its alien foe. With fantastic art and a story written by the series' original creator, it’s a great entry point into the series!

In 1973, Earth was invaded by an alien species known only as the BETA. With their massive size and seemingly endless numbers, they conquered most of Eurasia In the span of a few decades, and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the globe falls as well. Mankind’s last hope are the Tactical Surface Fighters: powerful humanoid machines that can stand up to the alien threat. But the enemy’s numbers grow greater by the day, and we’ll need new and better weapons if we’re to have any hope of survival…

May 2001. Yukon Base, Alaska, is home to Project Prominence, an international Tactical Surface Fighter (TSF) development initiative. Here, the best pilots and engineers in the world gather to make the weapons that will save mankind’s future.
After his involvement in a fatal training accident, maverick American test pilot Yuuya Bridges is removed from his unit and assigned to Argus Flight, a TSF development unit based in the frigid Alaskan wastes. There, he will work with a joint American & Japanese R&D team to build a new, next-generation fighter for the Empire of Japan.
From the moment he arrives, his cocky, anti-social attitude puts him at odds with the other members of his team, from his fellow test pilots to the project's overseer and his direct superior, the stern and by-the-book Lieutenant Takamura Yui.
Yui is the daughter of a traditional samurai household, who was the only survivor of her unit during the battle where the Empire’s capital was destroyed. Traumatized by the events of the battle and devoted to her family’s code of honor, she’s dedicated herself completely to her mission, which makes her constantly clash with Yuuya. Their constant fighting soon puts the whole project in jeopardy.
To make matters worse, Yuuya comes to realize that Yukon Base is rife with international intrigue, as each nation tries to steal each other’s secrets and ensure that when the war against the BETA is over, they’ll be the ones with the most powerful weapons.
As the alien threat grows greater by the day, can he overcome his differences with Yui and complete the weapon that will end the BETA threat forever?

This is just as good as the rest of them, if you are interested at all get the entire series. They are worth it! ♥ Plays like a dream on steamdeck
I'll be honest, I had low expectations for Total Eclipse going into it. I didn't enjoy Alternative; Unlimited: The Day After was neat, but I only enjoyed Episodes 0 & 3; and the prequel side-story for Total Eclipse, Imperial Capital Burns, was a massive slog despite having some neat concepts. If it wasn't for Total Eclipse being included in the Muv-Luv humble bundle I bought back in 2024, I honestly wouldn't have read it; in fact I was fully expecting to drop Total Eclipse within ten hours of reading before I even started it. I wouldn't have read the spin-offs if I didn't desperately want to justify the nearly 100 hours I’ve spent reading the trilogy, and later another 100 hours of reading the spin-offs. ...So imagine my absolute shock when Total Eclipse had me deeply invested, when Total Eclipse had me reading entire arcs within a single day (the arcs usually being four to six hours long), when Total Eclipse had me getting up at six in the morning twice out of excitement to keep reading it, when Total Eclipse made me so emotional I cried multiple times, and when Total Eclipse became one of my favourite visual novels I've ever read. ...So imagine my absolute shock when Total Eclipse had me deeply invested, when Total Eclipse had me reading entire arcs within a single day (the arcs usually being four to six hours long), when Total Eclipse had me getting up at six in the morning twice out of excitement to keep reading it, when Total Eclipse made me so emotional I cried multiple times, and when Total Eclipse became one of my favourite visual novels I've ever read. The premise explores an interesting side of mech stories I've only ever seen glossed over before: the construction/testing of the mech. The story focuses on the protagonist, Yuuya Bridges & lead developer Yui Takamura, who are part of the XFJ Project, with the goal to upgrade the Shiranui TSF/mech to the Shiranui Second so it’s stronger and more effective against the invading aliens, the Beta. Yuuya test pilots the Shiranui Second, Yui organizes the testing to make sure the Shiranui Second gets results for field distribution approval. Additionally, the construction of the Shiranui Second is also part of the larger UN-led Prominence Project, which Russia is also a part of, advancing TSF development with their test pilots Cryska & Inia, the Scarlet Twins. The focus on TSF development sounds boring on paper, and to some it might be, but to me it's insanely interesting. It's cool seeing the process of how a TSF is tested, built, why TSFs are designed the way they are, and what goes into getting TSFs field-approved. It really puts into perspective how much work goes into the mechs, the genuine risk test pilots put themselves in to test them, and how politics bleeds into TSF development. Since the XFJ Project is a Japanese project in an UN Building on American soil (in Yukon, Alaska), that also has the Russians stationed there as the XFJ Project’s next-door neighbours, there's a lot of politics and conspiracies going on between the four groups. Even the encounters with the Beta are riddled with human politics & scheming at their source, which as someone who admittedly doesn't find the Beta that interesting, makes when the Beta’s involved more exciting. At its core, Total Eclipse is less about the conflict with the Beta, and more about human conflict; how even in the face of humanity's darkest hour, there are always those who put their self-interest/country/ego over humanity’s survival and how far humanity will go to ensure their own survival despite the immorality behind the methods. Yet, Total Eclipse isn’t misanthropic thanks to the human connections made between Yuuya, Yui, the Scarlet Twins, and the rest of the XFJ Project. There are also a lot of info-dumps on politics, history, & TSF development/inner-workings; now, I hated info-dumps in previous Muv-Luv titles, I enjoyed them here a lot. They're rarely long and at their worst they just slow the pacing down in one arc. The information itself is fascinating since it puts the four main factions into perspective & where they stand at present and the specifics on TSFs help to understand how the TSFs operate & what makes each TSF model special. While the Muv-Luv Betaverse is fantastic, I was finally able to appreciate it thanks to Total Eclipse since it shows how other countries operate in the Betaverse (ex. African forces forbid use of drugs & post-hypnosis suggestions as they see it as inhumane, but this causes their soldiers to have a higher chance of being shell-shocked). Many people in the project like Tarisa (Nepalese), Stella (Swedish), Valerio (Italian), Theodorakis (Greek), and more are from countries that were destroyed by the Beta. Not only does it make for a diverse cast, but it also gives a phenomenal overview of the Betaverse and witnessing both the sadness of people not having a home to go back to & their inspiring hope they hold to one day reclaim their homes despite the odds. A lot of the characters are really enjoyable, especially Tarisa & Vincent, they're a blast. My favourites are Cryska & Sandek; Cryska not being familiar with a lot of common sense stuff or even jokes makes her both hilarious, but also tragic as it shows she’s lived a very sheltered life, to where the small things we take for granted are priceless to her. Every scene she's in is consistently super interesting, and she’s one of my favourite characters in fiction. Sandek and his voice on the other hand makes me question my hetereosexu- I mean, Sandek’s interesting with how cold and collected he is. Like, a part of me wants to hate his guts, but I can't help but respect him at the same time since he’s correct, but not right. Yuuya himself is a fantastic protagonist with an intentionally poor first impression, keeping others at arms-length & prioritizing his pride above all else. Given Yui’s journey in Imperial Capital Burns, Yuuya's basically doing the same thing Yui did when she was a teenager. However, over time Yuuya really grows up as a person thanks to the guidance & advice of those around him, especially Yui & Cryska. Like all the Muv-Luv titles, the visual presentation is outstanding. Character sprites, backgrounds, CGs, and animations are fantastic. I'd argue the action sequences are at their best here in the series thanks to both the addition of 3D cutscenes and with the many dogfights leading to more dynamic fights overall. The battle between Tarisa & Yuuya in Episode 1 is the best fight in the series imo, so the presentation makes one hell of an incredible first impression. However, it's the music that really elevates the experience as Total Eclipse doesn't share any tracks with the original Muv-Luv trilogy, which every other VN with Muv-Luv in the title, barring Capital Burns, uses. The trilogy's soundtrack is great, but is so horrifically overused across 11 titles that I got sick of it by the time I reached Alternative… The third title I read… Have I mentioned I read every Muv-Luv title on Steam? I really needed something new or I was going to lose my mind, but fortunately Total Eclipse allowed me to keep my sanity with a stellar soundtrack. However, the final chapter suffers from being rushed. The transition from Episode 18 to Episode 17 was way too sudden; the ending was weirdly vague; there was a deux ex machina that I’m pretty sure breaks multiple established in-universe rules; and the story ended prematurely before showing the big finale, so we only see its aftermath in a post-credits scene. There is also some really egregious plot armour from time to time throughout the story, and the anime humour just didn't work for me. Still these were pretty easy to look pass due to the pletheroa of positives Total Eclipse has. Genuinely, I cannot recommend Total Eclipse enough, it's so fantastic.
I'm a huge fan of MLA, and I really enjoy the story, but I simply cannot recommend a game with this poor audio quality at this price point. The original year-2000-ass Tsukihime VN had cleaner audio than this garbage. At the beginning, you think they're just doing a radio static sound effect for the voices but, no, that's just what this game sounds like always. I'm certain that if you could find the original release it would have better voicing than this "remaster." According to the community forum, this is due to the port (from PS3) (because for some reason they ported the PS3 version instead of just translating the PC version) being done by a mobile game company, and it seems like they compressed the audio and video to mobile game standards. I picked it up 50% off at $20 and feel ripped off. $10 sounds about right.
its like top gun (i've never seen top gun)

This VN is very good. It has its highs and its lows. Overall it was an amazing story. Sometimes it felt very slow but at the end it felt rewarding for those who have read other VN from the muv-luv series. I highly recommend it. It's better if you play the prequel to this game before, namely "the imperial capital burns".
