About

Introducing a fresh new chapter in the critically-acclaimed Muv-Luv saga! aNCHOR is proud to present Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Remastered, now officially available in English for the first time, with all the awesome action, heart-pounding music, and depression-inducing plot twists you’ve come to expect from a Muv-Luv game!
*Note that this release includes only the main game, and not the "Burning of the Imperial Capital" prelude story.
Total Eclipse is a stand-alone story that plays out alongside the events of Muv-Luv Alternative, showing another perspective of humanity’s grand war against its alien foe. With fantastic art and a story written by the series' original creator, it’s a great entry point into the series!

In 1973, Earth was invaded by an alien species known only as the BETA. With their massive size and seemingly endless numbers, they conquered most of Eurasia In the span of a few decades, and it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the globe falls as well. Mankind’s last hope are the Tactical Surface Fighters: powerful humanoid machines that can stand up to the alien threat. But the enemy’s numbers grow greater by the day, and we’ll need new and better weapons if we’re to have any hope of survival…

May 2001. Yukon Base, Alaska, is home to Project Prominence, an international Tactical Surface Fighter (TSF) development initiative. Here, the best pilots and engineers in the world gather to make the weapons that will save mankind’s future.
After his involvement in a fatal training accident, maverick American test pilot Yuuya Bridges is removed from his unit and assigned to Argus Flight, a TSF development unit based in the frigid Alaskan wastes. There, he will work with a joint American & Japanese R&D team to build a new, next-generation fighter for the Empire of Japan.
From the moment he arrives, his cocky, anti-social attitude puts him at odds with the other members of his team, from his fellow test pilots to the project's overseer and his direct superior, the stern and by-the-book Lieutenant Takamura Yui.
Yui is the daughter of a traditional samurai household, who was the only survivor of her unit during the battle where the Empire’s capital was destroyed. Traumatized by the events of the battle and devoted to her family’s code of honor, she’s dedicated herself completely to her mission, which makes her constantly clash with Yuuya. Their constant fighting soon puts the whole project in jeopardy.
To make matters worse, Yuuya comes to realize that Yukon Base is rife with international intrigue, as each nation tries to steal each other’s secrets and ensure that when the war against the BETA is over, they’ll be the ones with the most powerful weapons.
As the alien threat grows greater by the day, can he overcome his differences with Yui and complete the weapon that will end the BETA threat forever?

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse, developed by aNCHOR Inc. and fuzz, Inc. and published by aNCHOR Inc., serves as a companion story to the celebrated Muv-Luv Alternative, expanding the universe’s scope beyond the Japanese frontlines of the war against the alien BETA. Rather than revisiting the same protagonists, it presents a new cast and a different tone—one that fuses military realism, political drama, and personal struggle within the broader framework of human survival. The story follows Yuuya Bridges, a half-American, half-Japanese test pilot assigned to the Yukon Base in Alaska as part of “Project Total Eclipse,” an international effort to develop next-generation Tactical Surface Fighters. His assignment places him under the command of Yui Takamura, a noble-born Japanese officer with her own scars from the war. Their volatile relationship, set against the backdrop of xenophobia, grief, and cultural tension, forms the emotional core of the narrative and gives the story its distinct identity within the Muv-Luv mythos. From the start, Total Eclipse emphasizes its dual nature as both a character-driven drama and a piece of world-building that enriches the Muv-Luv timeline. While Alternative focused on the moral and existential dimensions of the war, Total Eclipse grounds its narrative in the pragmatic reality of engineering and military cooperation. The Yukon Base becomes a melting pot of international factions, each pursuing its own political agenda under the guise of collaboration. The story delves into the bureaucratic, scientific, and diplomatic side of humanity’s desperate fight, showing how ego, nationalism, and mistrust often hinder progress even in the face of extinction. Through Yuuya’s reluctant integration into this multinational team, the game explores themes of identity and prejudice. His personal insecurities—stemming from his mixed heritage and resentment toward Japan—fuel much of the story’s early tension, while Yui’s rigid sense of duty and trauma contrast sharply with his cynicism. Their evolution from animosity to mutual understanding mirrors the broader necessity of global unity that defines the setting. In terms of presentation, the remastered edition of Total Eclipse on Steam refines the experience with updated visuals, improved interface, and modernized text rendering. The art retains the distinctive aesthetic that defines the Muv-Luv franchise: elegant character designs, striking TSF illustrations, and richly detailed environments that balance military precision with visual flair. The high-resolution graphics enhance everything from cockpit interfaces to the gleam of metal under Arctic light, creating a visual style that complements the story’s mixture of humanity and machinery. The voice acting is strong across the board, with the Japanese cast delivering emotional performances that bring subtlety to the interpersonal drama. The soundtrack, alternating between militaristic themes and melancholy piano or orchestral pieces, reinforces the contrast between the grandeur of human technology and the fragility of the people operating it. Together, these elements build a sense of immersion that helps sustain the long, text-heavy narrative structure typical of visual novels. Narratively, Total Eclipse’s greatest strength lies in how it humanizes its cast against the mechanical and political machinery of war. Yuuya’s character arc is one of gradual self-confrontation; his arrogance and defensiveness give way to introspection and empathy as he learns to see beyond cultural boundaries. Yui, meanwhile, embodies the stoicism and emotional restraint of a soldier who has seen too much, yet her vulnerability emerges as the two form a fragile trust. The supporting cast adds texture to the story—engineers, pilots, and officers each contributing perspectives that make the base feel alive and functioning. The tension between scientific progress and emotional endurance is a recurring motif: every technological breakthrough carries a human cost, and every interpersonal bond is forged in the shadow of destruction. The story’s pacing, while slower than some might expect, allows for detailed exploration of each character’s inner world, gradually deepening the emotional stakes before the inevitable crises hit. Despite its depth, Total Eclipse does have imperfections. The pacing can sometimes drag, particularly in its early segments where exposition about the TSF project and technical jargon dominates the dialogue. These scenes serve world-building purposes but can test the patience of players who crave more immediate drama or action. The narrative also occasionally wavers in tone, shifting abruptly from heartfelt introspection to technical detail or political debate. Additionally, while the Remastered edition improves accessibility, the story assumes some familiarity with the broader Muv-Luv setting. Players unfamiliar with the main trilogy may find certain references opaque or emotionally less impactful without that contextual background. However, for those invested in the franchise, these details enrich the tapestry of the world, expanding the scale of the conflict beyond a single front and giving a global dimension to the human struggle against the BETA. Where Total Eclipse ultimately succeeds is in its portrayal of perseverance and cross-cultural reconciliation in the face of annihilation. The relationship between Yuuya and Yui becomes a metaphor for humanity’s fractured unity—two individuals divided by history and prejudice who must learn to trust one another to survive. Their evolution feels organic and earned, culminating in moments of emotional catharsis that resonate long after the final credits. The story also stands out for its focus on the unsung heroes of the Muv-Luv universe: the engineers, test pilots, and researchers whose contributions, while less glamorous than battlefield heroics, are no less vital. The blend of political intrigue, emotional vulnerability, and sci-fi warfare gives Total Eclipse its distinct identity—a companion piece that enriches the larger saga rather than merely expanding it. Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Remastered is a thoughtful and ambitious addition to the Muv-Luv canon. It may not match the sheer emotional power or narrative perfection of the main Alternative, but it offers a more grounded, introspective, and human perspective on the same apocalyptic struggle. Its technical polish, strong voice work, and visual refinement make it an excellent way for both new players and returning fans to experience this side story. For those who appreciate complex characters, thematic depth, and the melancholic beauty of humanity struggling against impossible odds, Total Eclipse remains one of the most compelling visual novels in the Muv-Luv universe—a story that captures both the tragedy and resilience of the human spirit in the shadow of extinction. Rating: 8/10
While it doesn't quite hit the same emotional highs as Muv-Luv Alternative, Total Eclipse is still a great visual novel with a good setting, interesting characters, and compelling drama. I will say that the pacing suffers a bit, and there's a bit too much military technical jargon, but the strong characterization kept me interested even when there wasn't much going on plot-wise. On the plus side, the excessive fanservice of previous entries is significantly toned down here (though it's not gone entirely). That was always an aspect of this series that bothered me, so I'm glad Total Eclipse has a stronger emphasis on characters and worldbuilding instead. I wouldn't quite say it's as good as Alternative, but at the very least you can jump in without having to play a crappy dating sim first.
