Reviews
Allow me to begin with what Musicmenia is NOT. This is not a rhythm game (mentioned in another review). This is not a deck-building game (Slay the Spire, Monster Train, Dominion, Ascension, etc.) as implied by the Steam tag. Some have described the game as Roguelite (which is by definition a vague term), but I don’t think that fits well either. So, what is Musicmenia? This is a constructed deck game (Hearthstone, Shadowverse, Magic the Gathering, etc.) where players construct their deck before a game but cannot change it during the game. This is a head-to-head game where two players face off and the only path to victory is to defeat your opponent. And finally, this is a card collecting game. In Musicmenia you are not guaranteed to acquire every card simply by logging hours in the game. The model for obtaining cards is based on a modified CCG format. New cards are found by opening packs that contain 5 random cards. The CCG format is “modified” because Musicmenia is not a cash grab or pay-to-win game. Packs CANNOT be purchased with real money (or in-game currency bought with real money). Every time you complete a game (online against another player or in the campaign against the AI) you’re rewarded with a pack. The game is very generous regarding the rate at which you earn new packs. Musicmenia gives you the excitement of opening packs without any monetary commitment which IMHO is great! The card battler genre is a somewhat crowded space and therefore a new game should bring something unique to the table. Musicmenia feels fresh in several aspects. The theme is not the same-old same-old dueling mages, battling armies, spaceship fights, etc. In Musicmenia, each player represents a classical music composer. Throughout the game, you’ll assemble an orchestra, select sheet music, and use the aid of historical composers. I enjoy games with atypical themes and Musicmenia is really superb in this regard. As you can imagine, this is not a game with minions, damage, and HP reduction which obviously wouldn’t fit with the theme. Instead of negative player interaction (such as attacking your opponent), Musicmenia focuses on earning points. A game is won by the first player to reach 100 points. Musicmenia focuses on positive player interaction (most cards enhance your point generation). Very quickly let me address: Visuals - The card art is fantastic and high quality. Each card looks like a beautiful painting. Unfortunately, the card layout looks like something you would see in a CCG 30 years ago. The rest of the visuals are functional, but uninspiring at best. Matchmaking Wait - I had no trouble finding a game with my average wait time being about 1 minute. This, of course, will be dependent on the level of interest/popularity in the game. Functionality/Navigation - There is no undo button which is an absurd oversight! So, if you misclick there’s nothing to be done. Also, it’s easy to accidentally discard from your hand which could result in losing a game. Music - Awesome! As you play cards (usually an instrument card) the music changes adding the sound of the instrument(s) just played to the soundtrack. The music is entirely classical. At this point, Musicmenia sounds like a high-note to be enjoyed by fans of card games with a few missteps to correct. A truly unique theme, a fresh approach to the card-battler genre, beautiful art, etc. However, in the areas that matter the most, the game is “out of tune” and I cannot recommend it for several reasons. The most important element of a card game is… well, the cards. Musicmenia launches with a whopping 300 unique cards. With so many, I expected a wealth of options to construct my deck. But many of the cards feel the same. For example, there is little difference between a card that adds points to string instrument cards and a card that adds points to brass instrument cards. The card pool lacks true variety so constructing your deck is boring. This naturally leads me to the other major issue - the lack of strategies to employ. There is really only one path to victory which is to build up point generation early and often. If you get enough of a headstart you will win. There are no long game plans to set up and execute. No alternate strategies to try. The game seems to be designed this way intentionally. Instead of being a fun back-and-forth competition games are monotonous, lack excitement, and predictable. For most, the appeal of games like this is trying out different strategies and that’s wholly missing. Previously, I mentioned the lack of negative player interaction. However, this element isn’t entirely absent. You can “turn off” an opponent’s point generation card or even discard a card from play entirely. I found it unusual that the game clearly wanted to move away from negative player interaction yet couldn’t entirely. This element while natural in any other CCG feels out of place in Musicmenia. If the game wants negative player interaction then it needs to lean into more. Some synergies seem inherently better than others. For example, if my cards generate 1 or 2 points compared to yours which generate 5+ points who do you think will win? Certainly, you expect different point-generation cards in a card battler (it’s the equivalent of creatures with low and high attack values in other games). The problem with Musicmenia is that you can get the higher point-generation cards into play about as easily as the low ones. Once you get the better cards there is no use for lesser cards. This comes back to the lack of strategies and deck construction options. When you add up these issues, the result is a game that is simply not fun. And I really, really wanted Musicmenia to be fun! I played for several hours, opened many packs, obtained over one-third of the cards, etc. hoping to discover something that would spark interest, add variety, and excitement. But I never did. Perhaps, there is some good stuff yet to discover (with many cards still to find in packs), but I have my doubts. I’ve seen many cards that I don’t have in matchmaking games. Nothing I’ve seen shows me there is more to the game. I love the unique theme, the music, and the bold approach to card battler games. I want Musicmenia to succeed. I’ll keep my ears open for future updates in hopes they improve the game’s design, variety, and user interface. Not every game is for everyone. If this game isn’t for me then who might find it appealing? Musicmenia may find an audience among those who’ve always stayed away from card battlers and CCGs due to their complexity and direct conflict. If you’re new to the genre, want a simple card battler, or want a relaxing head-to-head (yes, I realize that is an oxymoron) experience then this game could be for you. My apologies for the tardiness of this review. But I wanted to invest as much time as possible in a game like this before drawing any conclusions.

In each battle your goal is to get to 100 points before the opponent. You generate points by placing sheet music and instruments that generate passive point income. One problematic aspect is that if you get far ahead in points, it's almost impossible for the opponent to catch up. The cards themselves have very simple effects, triggering more points under certain conditions. However, there are also cards that discard your opponents cards in play. This means that, for example, you can discard their music sheet early and completely dismantle their point generation. If the opponent is unlucky, they won't be drawing a new one for a while (you draw ONE! card per turn). The same can of course happen to you. There are other issues - in the campaign mode you rarely acquire new cards, but can swap out decks based on the opponent (which the game gives you no information about). You make make different decks based on the music styles, but conceptually play the same so there is not much variety. In the single player campaign, for some unknown reason, there is a turn timer (!). While the music is nice and matches the active player music style, it changes whenever a turn passes, so depending on the turn length the transition can feel a bit jarring. Speaking about turn length, it is not rare that you simply do not have good cards to play on your turn, so some turns consist of you just passing the turn. Unfortunately, I just didn't find the usual excitement of card games in MusicMenia.
The positive
+ Theme
The neutral
* Timer in single player mode
The negative
- Limited strategy - Luck of the draw has a big impact - Not much variety in deck types.
Conclusion:
Despite the original theme, the cardplay feels shallow. Not recommended for single player. Something different for sure. I would say it is the roguelike deckbuilder equivalent of a Prose & Codes. Both are educative, soothing experiences in the same price bracket. Love 'em, it is a still for the current price, but without any promotion it makes sense that they cut the price for now. Grab it till you can. Update: the UI is a mess. And filtering is a nightmare. Also during runs you cannot change your deck, but that isn't explained either. Very frustrating if you want to climb the roguelike ladder. Because you cannot improve your deck and really the filtering (by keyword) and zooming options missing is just unacceptable if they want this game be playable.
TLDR: Good game once you get out of the starter decks. Cool concept 7/10 I am not AI. I got to #1 on the leaderboard after a 6-7 hour game session (I'm not good at the game) Good: - Synergies between composers, instruments, eras, etc. make sense. - The music. You build the orchestra to play the music. Its neat. - The rogue-like campaign is a great way to learn the game while earning card packs. - I haven't seen a pay-to-win mechanic, but I might have missed it. Correct me if I'm wrong. - I don't typically like/play CCGs but I like this. Maybe its because of my background as a music teacher... Bad: - The starter decks. Play through them and earn more cards quick. - You can mix and match musical eras, but the game doesn't do a good job of showing you that. - The single player AI doesn't play optimal moves. It won't remove the right card to save the game, you can cheese CP reduction cards, and sometimes it will discard a card that it could play for its benefit. Ugly - Nothing is worse than losing a game because you didn't draw any pieces of music to play. Before your instruments earn points, you have to put a piece of music on the board. If you don't draw any, the only thing earning you points is composers, but they're like 1-2 points each. You can win without playing a piece of music but its laborious and slow. I almost wish the pieces of music were in a separate deck that you'd have to discard things from your hand to play. *Edit to fix spelling errors.*
I liked the game, the idea is pretty fun and it's cute to listen how the instruments appear in the song each time we add one new. but I think the game would need one change: About deckl building: I do love how we can get so much cards fast getting 1 card pack each time we win someone in the campaign. On the other hand I think it is needed to put a limit of cards included in a deck or one can build a much stronger deck than others easily. For example the limit to discard an enemy card card to be capped at 2. Since I put 5 of those cards in my deck it became much stronger ñ.ñ Still, the game is cool and I had a lot of fun playing it and I have known some compositors and musics I did not know that are really beautiful. It has been a good experience.
Somehow both an asset flip and filled with AI Art, there's really not much of interest to look at here. There may be mechanics of interest hidden in there, but it's not worth shoveling through the ♥♥♥♥ to find it. Spare yourself the troubles and play actual competent titles that put real love and art in their product. This isn't much more than a cashgrab, I'm afraid. There's also some fake reviews on the title, some claiming they were kept entertained for "hours" with 0.5 hours on the game, such things.

《Musicmenia》:
