I wish we could give neutral reviews. Delicious Dungeon is a beautiful game with a lot of appeal, but I can't play it.
Summary + Gameplay
In Delicious Dungeon, you've taken over a restaurant in a beautiful fantasy town and brave a nearby dungeon to collect ingredients and fight monsters. Combat is a little clunky (it boils down to attack or dodge and your avatar doesn't always respond in the way you expect), but the music's fantastic and you can find these adorable little beetles that tag along on your crawl and fire at your enemies. Unlike the other dungeon crawling restaurant sim on the market, you can eventually hire staff to run your restaurant or dispatch the adventurer's guild into the dungeon in your stead if you decide that you prefer one aspect of gameplay over the other. Also unlike Cuisineer, cooking is more than selecting a station and waiting; instead, you play a series of minigames that determine the quality of your ingredients (a la Chef RPG).
Review
I was so excited to try this one, and especially excited by the low price point. Everything from the town to the anthropomorphic townspeople to the restaurant is beautifully rendered, and there are actual cooking minigames! The problem is the camera: it's not adjustable, your field of view in the dungeon is tiny, and the camera swings (not pans, swings) in the worst possible way, especially inside the restaurant. I'm not particularly prone to motion sickness, but was absolutely miserable after 30 minutes and will have to return this.
Recommendation
If wonky cameras don't bother you and you're looking for Cuisineer without the tedious cooking, then you should absolutely check out this indie game. Major issue with a quest I found within the first 30 minutes of play. When you're asked to chop the onions the first time I got confused and chopped all of my onions in my inventory not knowing what the food quality ratings meant. When it was time to make the 2nd dish the game didn't recognize I had chopped onions in my inventory for the quest goal which stopped the entire game and I had to restart with a new game. A bit annoying, but letting you guys know to only chop 4 onions the 1st dish regardless of chopped onion quality. They all don't have to be "good". So far, the aesthetic is pleasing and cozy, the fighting mechanic is easy, and like others have said the controls for mouse need major improvement, but didn't stop me from having a decent time. I'd recommend it for foodies that need another food exploration game if you can get past the controls and the chopped onions lol
It's a cute game with banger music! Love that I can choose the music in the restaurant. In my opinion it was worth the price Especially for a team of four, I can't wait to see what comes next.
Good, but could be better. Waiting for an update from the devs to fix a few minor bugs (i.e. getting stuck on some levels). I had hoped for a bit more... variety. There's no character creation in this and the npcs (staff) all look alike. I am hoping that the devs will change that - maybe add some armor or variety of blades the smith can make with materials you find whilst hunting. A pet, perhaps? (other than the one bog outside the restaurant). The game has potential to be excellent - it just needs more work. Please Devs! Make it awesome!
Its a nice little game but there are two things because of which i cant recommend it - First there are a few bugs where ingredients simply disappear and i got nothing out of them while crafting - Second the performance. Im running a 3090, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 32 GB of ram... as soon as there are more than a few flying projectiles the game starts to studder and to lag ... i mean seriously?! Please fix that stuff.
Only played 15 mins, Its annoying without a controller, it barely has mouse support. You have to use keys like Z or C rather than just being able to click. May be fun with controller, but I don't have one.
TL:DR - Let the price point be your guide. ================================== Long Form - This has so much potential it's irritating. The controls are poor and clunky for MnK (you cannot use the mouse in menus, further exacerbated by key bindings not being available); simple things like a dialog box in the tutorial stating an NPC is to the west when it is actually to the east suggest this was rushed out the door without the care the game design and aesthetic show. Some team truly loved this project until the final stages of pre-release and it hurts my heart thinking of what could have been. This has the feel of an unpolished demo. Left to fallow, there have been no patches in a year. If any care and attention were paid to controls, and some quality control, they could easily charge twice as much for this game and it would be a steal.
Could use more time and effort into making the combat. Combat feels all airy and can't really fight or dodge too well. No feeling of impact. Cooking is relaxing. Menu and text is tiny on the steamdeck. Update: The game deleted all my inventory, currency, and more. Sad.
I was looking for a game that was like the show, Dungeon Meshi. It just seemed so interesting and fun. This game kept popping up but it wasn't multiplayer and I just wasn't sure so I waited quite a bit to think before finally caving in and trying it out. The startup screen was cute, so we can start with a pro! Unfortunately, immediately after loading in I noticed the camera was a huge negative for me. It's like a third person isometric view but in the main building it gets kinda screwy. I got a little motion sickness from that (for context, I get motion sickness from boats and all "The Orange Box" games). HOWEVER, despite that I gave it a go and it stopped bothering me too often! I played for a few hours at a time! Really like that in the day we can go to the dungeon and at night we make supper at our restaurant. Your morning/evening is defined by whether you've gone into a dungeon/skipped to evening/went to bed so if you need to cook for your expeditions, no worries about how long it takes or when you do it! Same for the restaurant, you can only open up in the evening after you've either gone to the dungeon or skipped to evening. As a warning, skipping to evening crashed me once and I never tried it again x. Dungeon - It's fine, just gather stuff at the dungeon and fight things. Kinda wish I could see the map separately in addition to the mini-map so I could at least see where I need to go back to discover. I like the encouragement to learn to dodge better and decide the appropriate weapons per monster though! Kitchen - Again, the camera was not the best at times. Also, one of the BIGGEST cons for me was that the combiner kept eating my ingredients when making multiple batches at the same time! Really sad when you gather enough to make SIX batches and end up with only two. Inventory space doesn't seem to get bigger in the kitchen. I can only hold 10 things at a time even as I get recipes that are more complex. Some nitpicky stuff: - I wish I could at least choose whether my character is feminine or masculine at least. Or even a few upgrades to my gear? runs and running the kitchen. - The reputation system is a little confusing. Every time there's a change in reputation, positive or negative I get a green arrow going down. I'm still not sure whether petting Poggers is good or bad. - Some of the recipes are just straight up confusing. Especially the omurice recipe. I eventually got it but the combining part is where it got confusing. - Over time, dungeon feels very grindy. I understand there is the option to hire people but the quality of their ingredients are never good and in order to progress, I have to keep doing the run until I get it right which brings me to the next. - I think the old man is supposed to give tips on how to handle the next boss but it's not helpful really. It's basically "be sure to dodge, it has these powers which you know it will have because it's a boss version of monsters you've already fought". I dunno, I guess it would be nice to get some pointers like "oh when it DOES do this, it's helpful to eat a hardy meal to help with defense!" or something. - The overall inventory is weird. I don't think there will come a point where I sell my old junk from kitchen upgrades as I am nearly at the last meal I can make so why do I carry around all the junk? I know it makes no difference so whatever but it's just odd. TLDR; Great game, really cozy, a bit grindy for ingredients and money so not a good game to play too long in one session. THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE GAME. If your brain needs a break, this is pretty nice. The dungeon and restaurant times can last as long as you need them to. Idk if skipping to evening will always crash the game, I did it once and crashed so never tried again. Pros - Satisfies the desire for a game that let's you fight and gather and cook with the spoils. Fun to learn new recipes. It's giving Cooking Mama meets Dungeon Meshi??? Cons - Camera angles sometimes terrible, sometimes combining will reduce big batches of a food to like two, kitchen inventory space never increases
This game is torture to play. I had absolutely so much misery trying to play this game i went over the time to refund it trying to get my controller to work with it so i could play. I don't think I can ever look at this game again.
