So it's more of an experience than a game and really lives up to its name. It feels less like a traditional game and more like walking through a museum somewhere on the edge of a dying consciousness. That’s honestly the kind of feeling it gave me. There are many locations, and they all feel different. Some are calm and harmless, some are interesting, others are unsettling or even disturbing. And a few feel like they were taken straight out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s hard to even call this a “game.” It’s more like an arthouse experience than anything else.
Simple walking simulator where you explore a variety of landscapes and touch monoliths that all add another instrument to the background music. A relaxing way to spend half an hour, but not life-changing.
Walking sim games curator review: 5/10. About as pure a walking sim as there is. No real puzzles or challenges, just walk from the start to the finish. Although they contain lots of zigs and zags, the path you navigate is fairly linear except for maybe a couple of more maze-like levels. The visuals range from pretty bland and boring to truly fantastic. Sadly, bland is more common, and the best visuals are saved for the last two or three levels. The sound design is a bit of a bright point, mostly environmental sounds and interesting ambience with a slight spooky tinge. Occasionally there’s also some backing music that fits the overall theme pretty well. There is zero story, or even a consistent theme. Supposedly each level is its own standalone thing, but clearly designs and textures get reused some between them. Gamepad controls are atrocious. I had much better luck using Steam input to emulate keyboard and mouse than to try and use the native support. Disappointing but easy enough fix, and once using Steam input everything worked fine. In the end I can only give this the weakest possible recommendation. At times it was quite good, but most of the time it was pretty bland and forgettable. I certainly would have enjoyed some kind of gameplay element even if it was low stakes and low challenge. At best you can occasionally get turned around and get lost for a little bit.
An interesting showcase of environmental design with impeccable ambience. I'd describe it as walking through dreams.
As I understand it, this is a game about loneliness. I feel a strange mix of emotions when I walk through these locations.
I got this game on sale, as it stuck out from the wall of options I had. I'm intrigued by thalassophobia, and this game falls right alongside that genre. Museum of Monoliths is a masterpiece. Truly. While the game is relatively short, one can proceed at a slower pace and admire the scenery. In my opinion, each environment presents questions as I try to make sense of what lies before me. And unfortunately, those questions often go unanswered. Additionally, the museum is not so on rails that I can daydream whilst playing, but not difficult to where I'll get lost; it's enough to keep one engaged yet constantly wondering what's next. And personally, I found myself well immersed in the game during my play-through despite being aware of the simplistic scenery and assets. That is to say, all aspects of the game came together well to form the short story. I recommend Museum of Monoliths to those who enjoy scenery and speculation. While I tend to opt more for fast paced games, this one proved to be a most enjoyable change of pace.
You walk from point A - B while being in very unusual, mysterious, eerie and fascinating locations. I wish there was abit more to it such as notes, texts, anything to cling onto to help you build an idea of what these locations are, how they are formed, what caused it to be like this etc. Anything to keep your mind full of questions while exploring these locations make them more interesting to speculate. It's about 1 hour long, 10 levels and it's a walking simulator with really interesting visuals which i always welcome.
