MURI ain't just a great throwback that perfectly nails the look and feel of early 90s EGA-style DOS platformers, but also a masterpiece in a "dead end genre" that deserved further reconsideration.
(This game has been provided courtesy of Exa Rauin. Thanks!)
I'm not a FURRY, should I play MURI?
After gifting this to my older brother, I decided to wishlist this game. Little did I know that someone would actually send it to me. MURI is clearly inspired by the old classic DOS game Duke Nukem (before it became a first person shooter...it its golden years). This is evident in some graphical choices and the gameplay. MURI is basically Duke Nukem while taking some artistic liberties like including a new scenario, new enemies, and an ability to destroy enemies by stomping them or charging into them (at the cost of your health). You're given 4 chapters to play through basically making this game about $1.25 per chapter, which should take you about 10-15 minutes each. Each chapter includes 10 levels (save for the final episode on the hardest difficulty, which throws in a bonus boss level, making 41 levels). As for the game's construction, the game's story and ending don't make any sense. The bonus boss's presence is never fully explained nor is the player's true objective and motive. ...But then again, who plays games like Team Fortress 2 or Super Mario Bros. for the plot? That said, the plot here isn't the least bit good and only serves as a vague explanation for the scenario changes. Now, how does it compare to its source material? Personally, I would sooner replay the classic Duke Nukem than to play MURI again. It may be the nostalgia factor, but I remember having a lot more fun with the original source material, where everything exploded into confetti and with the sequel including new abilities to match your new ammo types. What MURI accomplishes with this player is to only remind people like me of where it was inspired from...this can be seen as both a good and a bad thing. MURI is not a bad game by any means, but is short and you may get tired of dealing with the same enemies within certain chapters. If you're interested in satisfying an old nostalgic urge, then MURI is here to help sate that. However, it just doesn't live up to the real deal in this reviewer's opinion. Also note that screenshots don't work as intended and there are no achievements. If that doesn't bother you, then who am I to stop you? It's a decent game. 6/10 Good, but a pale imitation.
nice old style game but short most likely its for old people only .. i replay it now with steam deck which is better even without support xD
Doesn't work properly in 2026 on Win 11. Maybe it did at one time. Hangs every time you exit the game. Keyboard controls are terrible, basically unusable, and you can't rebind them. Claims to support controller, but d-pad and analogue stick are both not recognized during configuration.
In this color scheme it is completely impossible to understand where there is a passage and where there is not, and you have to circle around the same place for half an hour.
