MOVIT is an abstract puzzle game with a neat original gimmick.
The goal is simple: to move the player's block to the win block without landing on other blocks. Levels are apparently sized 9x3. Looks deceive though: the levels are cyclic in north-south coordinate, a property that powers most puzzles in the game.
Be there or be... dead
Landing on any other block will lose the level. Initially, blocks stay still but really soon moving/changing arrow blocks of various kinds are introduced. There are adequate tutorial levels without being called tutorial levels. Some of the arrows only move when you move vertically or horizontally, while others have more complicated moving scheme. Puzzles are neat and good for both long sessions and coffee breaks. The size of the puzzles is just right. In fact, one level got me completely stumped and I thought about it while in the shower. Initially, I thought it looked impossible. Then it clicked in my head, and the next time I ran the game I got it almost immediately: an amazing feeling. Not many puzzle games manage to do that for me. Considering that, you can also skip a couple of levels if you really get stuck. That particular puzzle only seemed to have one solution, but some of them have several ways to beat them, which is also nice.
Looks and gameplay
As an abstract game there's not much to look at but I was happy to see the colorful arrow blocks. The interface is really neat. Color signifies the type of the block and arrow (if any) its moving direction, which is simple enough. Music is really nice set of chill piano instrumentals supplemented with strings (check the trailer for a sample). For once I didn't feel like muting it after a while. Options allow adjusting sound and music volume separately. The player square can be moved by keyboard arrows/WASD or mouse. Mouse is clumsier but has a certain advantage over KB: sometimes the moving blocks hide other blocks, so it's impossible to see what's underneath and how it'll move or change. But mouse movement allows one to see how the arrows move and change without committing the move. This is the only qualm of the game I can think of and it only concerns KB movement. In effect, KB and mouse controls complement each other, as it's faster to use KB. But in a complicated situation mouse dragging helps probing what's going on. I experienced no bugs whatsoever.
I liked it a lot!
There are 51 levels and it took me about 3 hours and 15 minutes to beat all of them, not counting the hour I spent in the shower thinking about that one challenging puzzle. There were no ridiculous filler puzzles and every puzzle felt well designed. I'd have been happy even paying the full price, considering it's low to begin with. overall alright for in between.
There's a problem where you cannot tell the difference between a covered red and gray block. When both blocks are covered, they have the same double black outline around them. So it's impossible to tell which one's red that changes or gray that doesn't change, making it extremely tedious. Unfortunately, the developer doesn't respond to these problems. Also, there aren't many levels and they are all extremely small without variety.
