Moon Raider is yet another 2D action platformer where you are tasked with collecting X - in this case, moon crystals to cure your ill mother. In the vast ocean of indie games that are currently available on Steam, this game is just another generic title that simply does not hold up to the standard that other developers have set. Between the simplistic levels, tedious boss fights, and handful of bugs, the lack of innovation and polish is clear almost immediately. Given the plethora of excellent indie games (often developed by individuals/small teams) at this price point, there is little to no reason why you should spend your money on this game. Played with PlayStation 4 controller
✔️Positive:

Given the adopted retro style, this game looks quite good. Each area has a specific theme/look, which added much needed variability to the game. Clearly the developers put a lot of effort into the visual aspect; however, perhaps a similar amount of effort should have been put into the story and gameplay as well.

➖Neutral:

The main character seems to be inspired by MegaMan but only shares a superficial resemblance. Besides the pose and the blaster (that doesn’t charge), there are no other MegaMan-like elements both in terms of gameplay and design.
There are multiple hidden collectables in the form of salvageable aliens, bonus rooms, and passive upgrades in invisible walls. However, these are, for the most part, incredibly easy to find which takes away from the thrill of finding them.
There are numerous small improvements that would immediately improve the polish of this game: [olist]
It would make sense to add a “Continue” option in the main menu. Currently, the default selection when the game starts is “New Game”, even if you already have a save slot. Luckily I didn’t accidentally overwrite my game file but this could easily happen.
As far as I could tell, there is no save indicator. I presume the game autosaves, so it would be nice to have an indicator and maybe an announcement at the beginning of the game along the lines of: “This game uses an autosave feature”.
Tiny creatures found in different points of the game are either hostile or non-hostile but there is no clear distinction between the two until you take damage. Maybe this can be made clearer? [/olist]
The following bugs should also be addressed: [olist]
Unlike everything else, the “Options” menu in the main menu does not respond to controller inputs, only mouse.
There are grooves in the walls that clearly aren’t intended for platforming but still allow the character model to land on it, sometimes resulting in a clunky platforming experience.
Unlocking gates/lasers is inconsistent in the sense that sometimes it stops your character from moving and sometimes it doesn’t. My problem with this is that I have died to enemies/insta-kill mechanisms because of the sudden restriction of movement.
Blaster shots can be blocked by dead enemies, even after their corpses disappear. [/olist]

❌Negative:

The overall experience is resoundingly mediocre. Everything works well enough but almost nothing stands out. Levels are very simplistic and require little to no thought to get through. You unlock only one active skill, the dash, early on in the game, which is overpowered and not sufficient to keep the gameplay interesting. Difficulty is often increased by adding insta-kill mechanisms instead of smarter/more complex enemies. Bosses have simplistic attack patterns and are mostly dull. Music is forgettable.
The story is shallow and barely ties in with the gameplay. The game starts with a short cutscene that gives you some context to the game but doesn’t explain much. For example, why did the Selenites turn against their queen? Unfortunately the game does not build on the story or provide any additional background details as you play through. There are only a handful of times where you will receive a call from your father - to provide some tutorial information or to congratulate you for finding a passive upgrade. How about some information about how mom is doing? Maybe some words of encouragement when you hit certain milestones (i.e. 50 moon crystals)? Even the ending cutscene doesn’t show your mom’s recovery, so why did I go through the effort of collecting moon crystals for her? It is easy to lose motivation given that the main goal (saving your mom) almost immediately becomes an afterthought.
There is no replay value and your save file becomes worthless once you beat the game - loading it will only trigger the end cutscene and credits. I feel like I wasted time trying to collect all the moon crystals since it has no influence on the ending and there is no option to go back to collect them all. In fact, the final boss drops an all-powerful moon crystal that fills the moon crystal counter to the max (200). So there really is no incentive to collect them during the game.

🏅Verdict:

★★☆☆☆ Generically dull
Unfortunately, nothing really sets Moon Raider apart. The lack of innovation in conjunction with the overly simplistic gameplay and poorly incorporated story resulted in a lackluster and tedious experience. Given that there are better games out there at this price point (e.g. Undertale, Minit, Hollow Knight), I cannot recommend Moon Raider.
«Moon Raider»
Enfrentando o primeiro boss adquirimos a primeira habilidade do game. O preço será revelado somente no lançamento do game.
A fun, fairly short 2d action-platformer containing what you'd expect to find in such a game - secret areas, collectibles, boss fights at the end of each area/zone. Great pixel art visual design, fun music and good controls using a controller (I didn't try the keyboard controls). Game play is just challenging enough to be fun, not frustrating. Something to note at time of play: The controller can be used throughout the game but is unresponsive in the actual options menu, there you will need the mouse. Not a problem for me, but something I do think worth noting. I only wish it was possible to return to areas to replay them. Having completed the game but missed a few achievements, I will need to restart the game from the beginning as the save for my first game is "complete". Though this isn't too much of an issue for me as I enjoyed the few hours it took me to complete the game. All in all this is a fun game reminiscent of 2d platformers from a bygone era. If you enjoy platformers and pixel art graphics I recommend picking it up to while away a Sunday afternoon!
Follow our curator for similar games
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/35180752-3-point-play/ Retro action platformer + hidden areas - short = Easier and simpler Mega Man. Fire away through 11 boss fights and 10 levels. Collect gems and discover secret areas.
Backed the game on Kickstarter based on the pixel art and visuals, but the game itself kinda disappoints. You get a single ability towards the start of the game which provides the game's only real source of fun, and everything else is passive upgrades. With ten areas to explore, each of which are broken up into stages, you quickly feel like the game becomes repetitive. All of the "puzzles" are the same: find switch, open barrier, collect gem. There's very little to it, and very little in the way of challenge -- until you get to the final boss which has a couple of attacks that will obliterate your health bar with very little time to react (especially as there is no ducking ability in game). It's not a terrible game, but it feels like it needed more upgrades, more things to do. As it is, it's quite monotonous and dull and I only finished it because I wanted to see if there was ever a second ability upgrade. There was not. Mediocre.
Intro: I got this title through my Steam curator a while back. Unfortunately, a slew of more interesting games won the random number generator game. Now that I have played it. Moon Raider is quite adequate, janky, and often mindless but mostly okay. Story: A brilliant scientist goes to the moon and discovers aliens. The queen of the aliens falls in love with the scientist and runs off with him. One daughter later, the queen is sick, and said daughter goes back to the moon to find a cure. There isn't much of a story to be found here. There could be some plot claimed from the context of fighting the King as you are typically his cheating wife’s bustard offspring but that's only when you think about it. The opening cut scene is there for context and little else. Now that we have that out of the way, let’s move on. Gameplay: Moon Raider is a basic 2d platformer and shooter. The levels are remarkable with only moderate exploration. There is nothing new to talk about here, most of its design is relatively competent. Wow. That was a loaded sentence! I can feel the asterisk hurtling towards me like a rogue shuriken. Moon Raider is at best a perfectly unremarkable title that serves to distract you for a weekend and at best annoyingly janky. The bosses The bosses (asides from the final) are surprisingly easy to deal with once the patterns are memorized. They do not evolve or change patterns at the moment. Boss fights are also recycled, I had two boss fights that behaved in the same way with different wallpaper. One was just a regular enemy but larger, and yet died as quickly as a normal enemy. The final boss fight felt like a real boss fight as it was challenging and had four stages. The only problem was that two of those four stages are repeats of the first two. It is also here when Moon Raider’s difficulty curve spikes upwards to the point of overhang. Janky controls You cannot shoot while double-jumping nor can you duck down to dodge projectiles. You can shoot upwards but you cannot move while doing so. The controls have a slight input lag, and if you try to shoot directly after landing from a double jump, your character will not shoot and will stand looking stupidly at the bullet that is about to hit her. These sorts of little problems mount up to a very big problem in the final boss. Which; as mentioned before, relies on twitch reflexes and reaction timing. You cannot do that when the controls lag or do not respond at all. The controls shift between being perfectly fine and awkwardly difficult to use. As a result, Moon Raider's final boss is frustrating as the controls are too janky to perform twitch reflexes.
