Going into this, I kind of assumed [b]100 Hidden Turtles[/b] would be [i]exactly[/i] like all those [b]100 Cat[/b] games that took over Steam [spoiler](funnily enough, from what I’ve gathered, 100 Hidden Turtles actually came first by almost two years).[/spoiler] Cute artwork, simplistic but fun gameplay, and the [b]0% to 100% completion[/b] runtime being [b]roughly [i]ten minutes[/i] [/b] [spoiler](if we’re generous).[/spoiler] And even though I only got [i]two outta three[/i] right, I’m still a bit baffled by the price tag, which [i]certainly isn’t expensive[/i] [spoiler](you can’t even buy a pack of McNuggets for $3.99),[/spoiler] but is [b]four times more[/b] than almost any other hidden animal game. Is it because [i]turtles are just objectively so much cooler than cats[/i] (or dogs, or frogs, or snails)? [b]Y’know, [i]it could be![/i] [/b]
[b]Hey[/b], listen to this, [i]it’s gonna blow your mind[/i]: [b]you see[/b], your main objective in 100 Hidden Turtles is [b]to find all [i]one hundred of the hidden turtles.[/i] [/b] I see you’re still in shock, so [i]I’ll give you a few moments to process that[/i]. . . . .[b]aight.[/b] So the gameplay couldn’t be any easier; move the mouse, find the turtle, [b]and click on it.[/b] [spoiler]Do that a hundred more times.[/spoiler] What makes this ([i]ever so slightly[/i]) more complicated than [i]say[/i] the [b]100 Cat[/b] games is that [i]not only[/i] is the picture a lot bigger (meaning you have to scroll down a bit to get to the bottom), [b]but[/b] there are also [b]multiple [i]secret pictures[/i] [/b] within the one ocean map. You can explore the submarine, for instance, or you can [i]barge into some [b]Octopus Dude’s[/b] house and trash their living room[/i]; all in the name of [b]turtlez[/b]. [spoiler](those aren’t the only other two locations, by the way).[/spoiler] Even with a larger picture and several other smaller secrets, the game is definitely [b]not difficult.[/b] Most of the turtles are in plain sight, and I found like 90 of them [i]in like five minutes[/i]…….[b]BUT[/b], [i]there are a couple of tricky ones…[/i] A few of the turtles swim around and stuff, and while it’s all pattern based, there were two or three in the [spoiler]]darkest spot of the abyss[/spoiler] that were kind of challenging. However, the biggest trial [b]by far[/b] was also [i]one of the [b]stupidest[/b] [/i]; I spent nearly 20 minutes looking for the very last turtle, and it was just [spoiler]underneath the Octopus Dude’s house the whole time.[/spoiler] But [b]I beat it![/b] It took roughly half an hour, which is much longer than I initially thought! I did see a review, though, of a guy who said that [i]his eight year old son found every turtle in less than ten minutes.[/i] Does that mean I’m dumber than an eight year old?? [spoiler](I’m sure everyone who read my Dementium: The Ward review already assumed that).[/spoiler] [b]Never mind that.[/b] This is good fun! [i]Super easy, super casual,[/i] but still [b]good fun![/b]
[b]100 Hidden Turtles[/b] is both [i]better[/i] but [i]slightly worse[/i] than its distant [b]100 Cat[/b] cousins when it comes to production value. Let’s start with the positives, [i]and the most obvious[/i]: [b]the game is in color.[/b] The bright hues of the coral mixed with the water’s softer shades of blue looks [i]very pleasing,[/i] as is all the fish and other sea life swimming everywhere. The turtles [spoiler](the main attraction!)[/spoiler] look adorable, and have some pretty silly poses. They don’t make any kind of sound when you click on them (unlike the [b]Cat[/b] games with the meows), so [i]that’s slightly disappointing;[/i] [spoiler]although, I admittedly don’t know what kind of sound a turtle makes. ...hissing? I’ll look it up. [/spoiler]The music is really upbeat and catchy, and [i]the entire ocean is invited to the dance party. [/i]Bubbles popping, seaweed vibing, fish jumping, practically everything on screen is [b]in sync to the music.[/b] All of this sounds great, but [i]I’ve got some nitpicks.[/i] While the art is really well done, it feels noticeably [i]less detailed[/i] than its competition; like, it gives off [b]Kids’ Menu[/b] energy. I also wish that each turtle had an individual name like in the [b]Cat[/b] games, but [i]ah well.[/i] still nice.
[b]100 Hidden Turtles[/b] is kind of like buying a coloring book mixed with an [b]I-Spy[/b] book, only to find out after purchase that [i]the book only has like five pages.[/i] I suppose that’s really no different than all the other [b]100 Animal Games[/b], and it still lives up to its title [spoiler](oh my gosh, you’re saying there’s a hundred hidden turtles in 100 Hidden Turtles???)[/spoiler] but I was kind of hoping for more. The art style is adorable, the music is catchy, and [b]turtlez are [i] e p i c [/i] [/b], but… [i]do I really recommend buying it for four bucks?[/i] [b]No.[/b] I recommend buying it [b]for [i]one[/i] buck.[/b] Get it on sale! And then [i]you could spot all the wittle turtles![/i]
