I cannot in good conscience recommend this game to any casual player. It is frustrating to wrangle this games poor designs and collisions at times to get completion, and it is a VERY difficult game as advertised. There's a good story, and it's relatively fun if you're able to remain calm, but it is not for a normal player. For reference, my breaking point was a series of finnicky challenges involving sliding, and a certain picnic invitation being screwed over by obstructive physics where each attempt requires a full days worth of length (where a save reload is faster), and paired that with a miserable 1 minute and 30 trial that is just boring to try. After completing the True Ending, I can say with certainty that it is a good story worth experiencing- Just not worth the struggle if that is not your thing. If there was a mixed review option, I'd use it here.
This review will be updated as I play more of the game (probably when I finish). I am barely more than 2 hours into Monospaced Lovers, but I can already recommend it. This game has been at the top of my Steam wishlist since I first played the demo over 5 years ago. Monospaced Lovers reminds me of the quirky yet creative era of Flash games, where conventional ideas of games could be ignored and you never quite knew what you were going to get. In particular, I was reminded so much of the game Level Up! that I was surprised the creator of this game had never played it (If you have any feedback or just want to talk about the games, he is very approachable on the Scarlet String Studios Discord server!). But to say that this game is on the level of a Flash game would be doing it an injustice. Monospaced Lovers has its own unique flavour of rewarding platforming, outside the box puzzle solving, and intriguing storytelling. It manages to be strong each of these categories without making sacrifices in any aspect of the game. Along with the custom soundtrack for every zone and the beautiful hand-drawn style art and animation, you can tell that this game has been a labour of love for the 5+ years it was in development. And that has truly paid off.

Monoscaped Lovers

8/10

The Space between Zelda-inspired and Metroidvania-inspired

Story, Art and Music
The story is consistently engaging and features a delightful cast of characters, there was never a moment when I didn’t enjoy the writing in their interactions. I’d say the overall vibe of the story could be summed up as Firewatch meets Undertale and Celeste. The hand-drawn art looks great and it’s well-animated. The soundtrack is also quite nice, leaning towards a calmer vibe overall, even when what's happening on screen is pure hell, there are a few songs that really stuck with me.
Metroidvania-lite
The story progression is fairly linear on paper, though the game doesn’t tell the player where to go next, giving you some freedom to figure out how to advance the main story. On top of that, it counts with non-linear exploration for side content. Its map is smaller and more compact, with an area at the center of the world that connects to the others, offering around 5 areas with some degree of interconnectivity. Unlike other games, the collectibles aren’t player upgrades; instead, they provide story content and cosmetic items while all the metroidvania-like upgrades are tied to story progression. It’s really a game where exploration is driven by a “childlike sense of discovery”.
Gameplay, Difficulty and Accessibility options
Overall, it’s a pretty challenging game. The main story puzzles are challenging without being too cryptic, and the platforming feels very puzzle-like, requiring a fair amount of precision. Honestly, those aspects of the game were never really that hard in my opinion… Then you have the bullet hell combat against bosses. It was fairly manageable on hard difficulty until the bosses got noticeably harder in the second half of the game. I don’t have much experience with bullet hell games, but I managed to beat Rabi-Ribi (a bullet hell metroidvania) just by being persistent. However, for this one, I ended up lowering the difficulty. The game offers accessibility options for both puzzles and platforming. It also lets you fight bosses on an easier difficulty and includes a practice mode for their different phases.
Things I didn’t quite like

I was never a fan of the health system for the bosses. On hard difficulty, you’re forced to survive the bosses’ special moves without taking any damage. If you fail, you’re sent back to the start of the phase, which makes your health points feel almost pointless at times.
Some puzzles require specific knowledge, like binary code, piano keys, and zodiac symbols. While the game makes it clear what you are expected to do, it can still be a bit frustrating to have to Google certain information. One of the first main story puzzles uses binary, which might leave a bad first impression in some people, but thankfully, the rest of the main content is much lighter on these kinds of puzzles.
I think chapter 3 had too many piano puzzles, I'm not a big fan of them. I also didn’t like having to wait for the effects of the teas to wear off, that was also a little bit annoying, specially when one of them feel like was trying to give me a seizure or something XD
Some effects for the chips' texts were slightly annoying, I like to take my time when reading.

Conclusion
Overall, this was a memorable experience that I thoroughly enjoyed for most of the 30 hours it took me to finish(missing half of the chips). It’s definitely challenging and somewhat niche, but absolutely worth experiencing for its good and relatable writing, childlike sense of exploration, and intense bullet hell challenges.
very fun and great story so far

Amazing platformer. Haven't completed the whole game yet but the movement is smooth and the levels are challenging. I'd say the rapid fire of small red orbs is a little bs and adds an element of RNG though, so that is something I could do without. The game doesn't pull its punches, which I love, but if you are struggling with it there is an easier mode (I haven't tried it though). Amazing puzzles. Haven't seen a game before that trusts its player to think outside the box to this degree. Also haven't seen a puzzle that requires me to do a screenshot and go to paint before. Overall, all the puzzles are unique, interesting and I am always able to come up with a solution even if it sometimes takes a lot of time. Amazing writing. Most of the lore of the game is revealed through dialogue and oh boy is the dialogue natural. There is stupid puns being littered throughout, silly banter, characters opening up about stuff and every character having a well-defined personality. It sometimes annoys me how I may be in a middle of solving a puzzle and a dialogue sequence gets triggered, but it is but a minor inconvenience. Amazing game. I'm really enjoying the scenery, the characters, the challenges and I like how it doesn't require a huge time investment from me. Great game, I hope more people get to experience it.
Cryptic puzzles and punishing platforming perils be damned! Monospaced Lovers is worth all the gamer sweat & tears!
