Mononeko, developed and published by Ribeye Games, is an indie rhythm-action title that combines fast-paced combat with music-driven gameplay and a surprisingly serious narrative foundation. At first glance the game appears to be a colorful and energetic arcade experience centered around a stylized feline protagonist, but beneath its lively presentation lies a darker thematic core. The game explores issues such as neglect, abandonment, and cruelty toward animals, framing its action through a story of vengeance and justice carried out by a mysterious cat-like spirit. By blending rhythm mechanics with side-scrolling action and emotionally charged storytelling, Mononeko aims to stand out as a unique entry within the rhythm game genre. The story revolves around a supernatural cat entity that embodies the collective spirits of mistreated kittens. In the world of Mononeko, abandoned and abused cats have become a widespread tragedy, and the protagonist emerges as a symbol of retribution against those responsible. Rather than presenting long dialogue sequences or traditional storytelling cutscenes, the narrative unfolds gradually through environmental details, encounters with enemies, and symbolic imagery. As the player advances through different stages, the journey reveals glimpses of the suffering experienced by the animals whose spirits now empower the protagonist. The result is a narrative that relies more on tone and atmosphere than exposition, allowing players to interpret the meaning behind the game’s events while gradually uncovering the purpose of the mysterious feline hero. Gameplay is built around rhythm-based combat that requires players to synchronize their actions with the beat of the soundtrack. Instead of attacking freely, players must time their strikes, movements, and abilities in rhythm with the music. When attacks are executed correctly on beat, they flow seamlessly into powerful combos that allow the protagonist to dispatch enemies efficiently. Missing the rhythm, however, disrupts the chain and can leave the player vulnerable to incoming attacks. This system transforms combat into a musical performance where timing and awareness are just as important as reflexes. The mechanic encourages players to internalize the rhythm of each track, creating a satisfying sense of flow once the player becomes fully synchronized with the music. The combat itself resembles a hybrid between a rhythm game and a traditional side-scrolling action title. Players move across stages filled with enemies, environmental hazards, and obstacles while maintaining rhythm chains. The pace of combat often increases as new enemy patterns appear, requiring players to maintain concentration while reacting quickly to attacks. Some enemies demand precise timing to defeat, while others require players to adapt their rhythm patterns to avoid damage. Boss encounters elevate this concept further by introducing complex attack sequences that force players to carefully balance rhythm accuracy with quick decision-making. These battles often feel like rhythmic duels where the player must match the tempo while learning enemy patterns in order to succeed. An additional gameplay mechanic involves rescuing the spirits of fallen kittens encountered during the adventure. These rescued spirits strengthen the protagonist and can enhance abilities, representing the idea that the character carries the collective strength of those who suffered before. This system adds a light progression element that rewards exploration and persistence. As more spirits are gathered, the player’s attacks become more powerful and visually impressive, reinforcing the emotional theme that the protagonist’s power comes from the voices of the forgotten animals. Visually, Mononeko presents a striking hand-drawn art style that blends bright colors with darker undertones. Character designs are exaggerated and expressive, with the feline protagonist standing out as both cute and mysterious. Enemies and bosses feature unique designs that often symbolize different aspects of the game’s themes. The environments are colorful but occasionally unsettling, reflecting the contrast between the whimsical aesthetic and the grim narrative subject matter. This artistic approach helps the game establish a memorable identity, balancing charm with moments of eerie atmosphere. The soundtrack plays a crucial role in shaping the entire experience. Since combat revolves around rhythm synchronization, the music acts as the backbone of gameplay. Each stage features tracks that guide the tempo of attacks and movement, effectively turning the soundtrack into an interactive gameplay element. When players successfully align their actions with the beat, the experience becomes almost hypnotic as music and combat merge into a single fluid rhythm. The developers clearly designed the levels around the structure of each track, ensuring that gameplay and music reinforce each other rather than feeling disconnected. However, the game’s current scope reflects its Early Access status. At present, the available content includes a limited number of chapters and boss encounters, meaning the full narrative and gameplay systems have not yet reached their final form. While the core mechanics show significant promise, the amount of content may feel somewhat brief for players expecting a complete experience. The developers have indicated plans to expand the game with additional stages, enemies, story segments, and gameplay features as development continues. Despite this limitation, Mononeko already demonstrates a strong creative identity. Its blend of rhythm-based combat, emotional storytelling, and distinctive art direction creates an experience that feels both unconventional and memorable. The game’s willingness to tackle serious themes while maintaining energetic gameplay gives it a unique voice within the indie scene. Players who enjoy rhythm games or experimental indie titles may find the concept particularly intriguing. Overall, Mononeko offers a compelling mixture of music-driven action and symbolic storytelling. While the Early Access version still leaves room for expansion and refinement, the foundation is strong enough to showcase the game’s potential. The rhythmic combat is engaging, the art style is distinctive, and the underlying narrative adds emotional weight to the experience. With continued development and additional content, Mononeko has the potential to grow into a truly standout rhythm-action title. Rating: 8/10

It's still needs a lot of work but the concept of a more fast/steady rythmic Patapon-like looks great. Having more static enemies and not just waves could benefit more the aim system. Also uping up the dificulty by making drops dissapear over time would justify having a timer in the first place. The 2d Animations of course are beatiful and charming, I still find lacking some more work on the audio design part, making the songs sync better with the tempo and the cats react with sounds to commands would be great. I know Ratatan will be coming possibly next year, but having small projects like this that show how much people loved Patapon games is great, please keep working on it !!
I like what it's going for, but the gameplay could still be ironed out. Sometimes it didn't feel like it flowed well, and a metronome calibration feature would help a lot. At the moment, I feel the art and music carries the experience. I'm excited to see what the game becomes in the future.
|《Mononeko》 |

Game is tough, but I'm having a good time perfecting my runs.
Eng: The game had major issues, and that’s exactly how it’s stayed. The developers decided to scrap the game. Thanks for destroy my hopes. The fate of this game is to become yet another failed project.
Rating: Dito: 4.2/5 Chat: 2.92/5 Gesamt: 3.56/5
art team popped off!
I love patapon. I want to love this game, but only if it improves enough. What I like: I like the art. I like the music. I like that you can directly give a new command without having to wait for the mono nekos to do the current action, unlike in patapon where you have to wait for them doing the current command. What I don’t like: There is no quit game button in the main menu. You have to out-tab and close the game manually. The drum sounds sound very basic and are not well synchronized with the rest of the music. The Mono Nekos don’t have enough health and die quite fast. The Cat Necromances should be capable to always shoot her little coin with the rest of the army, she only does so as a last defense when all cats are dead. The time window for the commands is a bit too small, at least add an option to make it wider, like an easy mode. Losing your command chain because of a super small-time delay is not fun. The cats cannot come with you after you have finished a mission when they died in the last mission. Please make them resurrect at the start of each mission so the army gets bigger with every mission. There is an item shop in a mission, please make it a permanent shop, like a menu you can open or something like that so you don’t lose out on the items. The game has potential and it makes me very happy that indie devs are making tributes to the legendary patapon games. Please improve this game :)
