Patapon but with cats! This is a more arcade-y and smaller version, only taking the rhythmic commands from those games. The art style is gruesomely cute, pretty good combination of cartoon + blood with very nice animations. The gameplay is responsive with (at least for now) simple actions, so easy to remember, although a way to calibrate the metronome would be appreciated. It needs improvement, obviously, the timer is pretty short and leads to unfair deaths because of bad luck and the randomness of the spawn of enemies is a bit annoying, it feels hard at the beginning but one can get the hang of it quickly. Extremely curious on what will be added in this early access, this is a good base and a fun experience. Very recommended.

It would be fun if i could get past the tutorial but there is no way to calibrate the metranome
It's an okay game. Let's start with The Good: - The character designs are well made, with nice color palettes for the main character and the pawns(?). - Along with the enemy designs, each of them is unique and is immediately distinguishable from one another. Able to tell what they'll do. - The animations are fluid and overall smooth, giving a nice "Cuphead" feel to it. - The sound design is also nice, with each beat corresponding to a cat-like sound for each command - The decision to either get an item/new pawn or extend the timer per level is neat. Gives it a nice variety. - Bosses are what I think is the best part of this game. They're all unique, and even more wacky attacks. It's great. I did fail to fight them a few times but they were well thought out, for sure. Now, for The Bad: - The pacing is off, more in the sense that the basic ground enemy enters the screen too quickly and, is unable to react quickly enough due to the limiting beat, and by the time you're able to initiate the attack, it's already too late. It's better to preemptively start the command than to react. - Music is lacking, for a rhythm game. The beat is there and some melodies are heard but it's not as pronounced, or unique. It's "tamed" in a sense. Some nitpicks I have: - I made an error in Level 4 and was unable to progress forward due to a hole in the ground. Decided to restart thinking it would restart the level, only to set me back to Level 1, just needs a minor fix. - The animations for chaining commands (up, down, left, right) could use more fluidity as it's going from one after the other. It looks awkward as you go left then up, or going back to idle animation after a command. It feels stiff in that aspect. - Background art while in-game is ok, but doesn't blend in very well. It's contrasting to the point where it is unable to fit itself in. - Music could be more varied, but it more or less sounds monotone generally. This game shows a lot of potential. However, in its current version, there are plenty of problems where it needs more improvement.
I want to like the game I really do but it needs so much work at this point to be fun. The background music does not flow well to the rhythm. I find myself frequently making mistakes when the BGM gets louder. You can turn it down which helps. Basic enemies are extremely harsh and often kill your army in a few hits which can happen after 1 or 2 mistakes. I had 1 run make it to the first boss but I had no army left to actually fight it. The timer system seems unnecessary, it prevents you from playing safe in a game which is already quite harsh. You can have your army completely alive at full hp but if you time out your run is done. Im not too sure what this game needs to work or if the devs even want to continue working on it. I think maybe having some progression could be nice allowing the player to get stronger between runs could help. Some of the basic enemies definitely need to be looked at it feels like when they hit they hit multiple times. I think the art is nice and I want to support this project. I think it lost some of its charm since the kickstarter; but it still has potential. In its current state and its not very fun to play and its demands quite a lot of practice to overcome the difficulty. I wish the best for the developers and I will be keeping a look out for updates. However in its current state I cannot recommend the game even to Patapon fans.
After finishing the early access, there are multiple instances in which the player experience can be broken. First and foremost, the performance of the game. There are some performance issues in the game that needs to be looked into. I could see the assets being loaded real time, having the missing textures as it's replacement during it. There are also instances of frame drops and the game just lagging in general. Any instance of lag will ruin the experience, making it impossible to even get past the first note of a command. Continuing with the music and sound. I have observed that the music does not align with the metronome after a while. Though, it seems even with the music on mute, it does not matter as being on beat with the metronome is more important. However, being a rhythm game, it is quite upsetting. I have also observed that even without any noticeable frame drops or lag, I sometimes miss a beat. It could be that the timing was strict, I was too fast or slow, or the aforementioned performance issues. Now, I do not have any experience with music, so i do not have much comments. Apart from it being sounding the same? However, with the gameplay, personally, it does not fit well. Now, for the actual gameplay. The rougelite itself takes place in the level design, enemy and obstacles spawning, and the shop, so I am not going to go too deep into that. However, it sometimes leads into funny encounters with having 2 dead cats or 7 digging sapling enemies in a row. It also leads into this annoying instance in which any balloon moving into the armored balloon will collide with it, making this collision sound over and over. As for the rhythm gameplay, with the problems with performance, and the music becoming boring as the gameplay moves on, it's quite disappointing. Next, the rhythm gameplay being inspired by Patapon. I should state that the gameplay itself is not similar to Patapon, just inspired. Rather than having a break between commands, you can continuously order commands and cancel commands anytime, you just have to be on beat. I don't know if this is the intended gameplay. Although, continuous commands such as attacking (and the only command you will be spamming) will make them not attack anymore. Combined with the music, it does not feel right? Like the music does not interact with the gameplay? I don't know how to properly convey this. It might be because of that lingering Patapon nostalgia, but I feel like the gameplay should somehow interact with the music. Crypt of the Necrodancer does this very well. The difficulty of the game is not hard. There might be enemy spams, but the defend command negates all damage for a short time. I believe the difficulty comes from inputting the commands with the aforementioned issues. There are also instances of enemy attacks not damaging the players. I noticed this with the fox enemy not damaging the cats, even if I didn't do anything to defend. The bosses are quite easy because of the commands. The bosses should attack more. I like the art of the game, however, after viewing it for quite some time, I notice it doesn't blend well together. What should be the foreground feels like the background at times. This also leads to obstacles like the gate, being out of place. I believe the designs could better. However, this is far from being a problem and more of a personal gripe. I also like that they want to give voice to animal abuse, but the current story and design of the game does not convey it properly. That ends my review. In its' current state there needs to be a lot of polishing and fixing. Combining rougelite, rhythm, and combat is difficult, but I do hope the developers succeed.
I played until the 1st boss, failed and the game crashed. The game has potential, but as a Patapon player I must say that it needs a lot of refining, and sadly, there are likely many things Patapon did right and has registered a patent for each and single one of those. I know the game is not a high budget game, it is actually really cheap, but I still asked for a refund. I will give my suggestions as far as possible, but I don't think I will be playing this again. The drum on the top of the screen is hard to see. Patapon has the screen border flash, which is a very clear and hard to miss a beat. That is likely patented, so the dev has to think of something else, but on a big screen that is pretty hard. The controls are very unintuitive for a Japanese controller layout. I understand the XXYY, XXBB and XXAA are relative to the American(SNES) layout controller, because the buttons are top, mid and bottom, but for someone used to the Japanese(SFC) layout, this is just horrible. Y is on the left, B is at the bottom, A is on the right. Just changing the layout in Steam is not going to help because I am used to that layout, and will just keep pressing the wrong buttons. Maybe adding controller mapping to other controllers in the settings can help. There's no "step back" function. I died because I moved too forward in the 1st boss, and cannot attack the boss at all. I know I suck at rhythm games, but I liked Patapon so much that I can play without sound. This game's beat is just somehow so hard to grasp or that the tolerance is too high that I don't know if I get the right beat or not. I can go pretty random and still pass the command, but the command can also suddenly be stopped because I hit the button either a bit too fast or too slow. Everything feel off, wanted it to be at least a good game, but it is beyond my grasp right now.
It has amazing art, but it doesn't really explain anything. I really don't like that the timer is for all levels together. Obviously inspired by Patapon, but I feel like the gameplay is too slow and a bit boring. On top of that, its *really* hard. Yeah yeah skill issue get better whatever, doesn't change the fact it is not beginner friendly, and does not have the fun factor to make me want to continue past that.
19 Months in Early Acces 17 Months last Update ago Nuff said. this SCAM will be Removed from Steam soon. https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/2458120/view/498348220977515014
Development Is Ending, Mononeko Will Be Delisted From Steam Hello everyone, We're writing to share important news about Mononeko: A Rhythm Adventure. It's been 19 months since we've gone into Early Access and we've been silently working on more of the game, but at last the reality of economic hardships has hit core members of the team and we are no longer able to continue development. After a lot of consideration, we've decided to stop selling Mononeko on Steam. The game will be delisted from the Steam store in the near future. This wasn’t an easy decision, but it’s the right one at this point. If you already own Mononeko, nothing will change for you: The game will remain in your Steam library You’ll still be able to download and play it as usual We sincerely thank everyone who played the game, left feedback, shared videos, or supported the project in any way. Mononeko exists because of your curiosity and enthusiasm for rhythm action, and we're genuinely grateful for that. Thank you for being part of Mononeko’s journey 💙
Fun but incredibly challenging and very testing game that possible needs a few patches before being a highly recommended, for the very low price i paid i am not disapointed at all in the game which is as mentioned, very hard. Turning on easy metronome mode resolves a lot of the problems right away but until the game has a way to actually quit without having to crash to desktop it's a soft recommend, if you get it for less than $3 go for it, the visual style and music is worth that alone, along with the utterly unsettling ghost kitties, bloody drums and other amazing graphic choices, this is an adorably gruesome game.
