Momodora: Moonlight Farewell is a metroidvania game focused on close melee combat and exploration as the story of bells and moon gods gone wild surrounds our leafy protagonist, Momo. This is the final game of the Momodora series so does it go out on a strong footing? [Presentation: 10] Visuals: 3 There’s some nice pixel sprites and art here. Animations looks good. The areas themselves have a fine color palette but some areas can appear a bit samey making some areas hard to remember. Some foreground elements in a few areas can obstruct the view, especially of drops or small enemies. Late game areas use a lot darkness to obscure the visuals and I’m not a fan of that in action games like this. Audio: 4 The sound FX are pretty basic throughout but well used. Attacks and hits sound punchy and there’s this 16 bit sound feel to most elements. The music has some atmospheric tones of the areas and the boss music is honestly pretty solid. Voice Over: N/A Oddly, there was one voice clip in the game but as it was so brief, I’m counting it as a sound FX so nothing of note here. UI: 3 The game UI is fine overall. It’s a bit too muted in some places, such as the main menu screen. The in game menu is a laid out a bit strange so it takes a bit to get used to. Text boxes are easy to read but not sure if I like the vibrating text in some places. [Technical: 15] Game Options: 3 Since this is a pretty simple 2D pixel art game, there isn’t too much here in terms of game options. You get your basics like resolution, audio sliders and some HUD options. FPS can be set to unlimited, 30 or 60 along with v-synch. Graphics and Performance: 4 The above options are pretty much what you get for graphic options. Oddly enough, there are no FPS limits for anything above 60 but the game runs fine at that anyway. Controls: 4 The default set up for the controller is pretty solid and I have no complaints. The default keyboard set up however is not ideal and if you’re going to play the game this way I strongly suggest changing it. Thankfully everything can be easily rebound to your preference. Bug and Glitches: 4 Not sure if this one is a bug or not, but sometimes I couldn’t dodge when Momo was in her attack animation and this caused me to get unnecessarily hit more than once in the game. Other than, that, I didn’t come across any note worthy bugs. [Story: 14] Writing: 4 The overall writing quality was pretty solid and concise. There were a few odd grammar choices here and there but nothing that detracted from the experience. Plot: 3 It’s… pretty basic as far as plots go. A stolen bell is making demons appear and for some reason this agitates the moon gods. Momo goes off to fight baddies and that’s kind of it. It’s not bad, but not great either and at times I found things a bit hard to follow or get invested in what was happening. Characters: 3 Like with the plot, there isn’t a whole lot of characterization going on with the cast. Momo, Cereza, Dora and Lineth being the only real characters here and they’re all pretty one note for the most part. Lineth being an ass for most of the game just isn’t explained. World Building: 4 I’ll confess, I’m not familiar with the lore of the series before Reverie Under the Moonlight, but I do know that was more of a prequel that took place before any other game. There’s a few references to Kaho here and there as well some summary info of the prior games, so there is some connective tissue here for those looking for it. [Gameplay: 13] Systems: 4 The core combat is feels well thought out. We have a decent upgrade system via item pick ups along with relics for adding abilities. The sigil system is most fascinating as it acts as game modifiers to change up the gameplay and is fun to play around with. There are some issues with the design of combat such as attacks shifting the player forward and the color of the attack being the same as the color of most enemy tells (red in this case) making them hard to distinguish in busy situations. Balance: 3 This is perhaps the most subjective area, but I found the Normal difficulty fine… up to a point. Eventually, enemies just hit too hard, are too fast, too tanky, and worst of all, can hit you with ranged attacks from off screen. I had to turn things down to Light (Easy) mode to finish the game. Some of the boss fights do feel well designed and were fun, while others were way over tuned and felt impossible to do on the normal difficulty. I’ll also add that contact damage is hit or miss and isn’t always to easy to predict when it applies. Design: 3 This game follows the typical metroidvania layout of having several maze like zones with secrets and pickups. The overall zones themselves feel unique with some good progression gates throughout. Some areas are a bit too maze like and samey, leading to an over reliance on the map to get around. Unfortunately you don’t get access to fast travel till over half way through and backtracking is quite arduous with few shortcuts to take. Fun Factor: 3 I was honestly hoping to enjoy this as much as I did the prior game, RutM, but this one didn’t quite hit the same mark for me. I think it has to do with some of the balance issues that got frustrating when I got several hours in. The story and characters didn’t really hook me. However I did enjoy the pixel art and the music was on point for the most part. Conclusion: This a fine, and relatively short metroidvania, with some rogue like gameplay. It’s got some interesting ideas gameplay wise; I think the sigil system is quite interesting to experiment with and the game does a good job of scratching that exploration itch. The combat gameplay and balance feels like it needed some more refinement. Maybe this works better for certain players who are more into the rogue like, Hollow Knight approach versus the rpg like mechanics of Castlevanias (which I confess, I’m more a fan of in Metroidvanias). Still, the game is usually on sale for a good price and if you’re into these kinds of games its worth checking out, so have my recommendation. Final Score: 6.9/10
Metroidvania gold standard. Great sprite animation, pretty decent story, and not too much backtracking to annoy you. What more can one ask for? This game is the continuation of the already great track record the previous games had already established. The music gives a very relaxed and cerebral effect to the overall experience. One can ask for nothing more with this game. More people should definitely know about this gem.
Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is a cute game with decent exploration elements. Music and sprite work are charming. The gameplay can be a little simple but ultimately this is a short but very solid Metroidvania. I enjoyed it cute and quick. 7/10
