The worst part is not what waits at the bottom. It is realizing that you followed it there. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749914911 MOLE starts with you waking up in a dark room to the sound of a beeping alarm. You do not know where you are, what happened, or what you even are supposed to do. The game slowly gives you pieces of information. The crew is missing, the machine is falling apart and something below keeps calling to you. That is probably all you should know before playing. Most of the gameplay involves operating things. You turn switches, insert tapes, use old computers, repair broken systems and basically just try to keep everything running. At first, you have no idea how to operate any of it. But as you read manual pages, study the controls and stare at things until they start making sense (and be careful with your retinas), the process slowly becomes routine. Kinda comforting even. Until that routine grows more disturbing with every passing moment. Something changes. Even a strange sound or an open door is enough to make you wonder if you really want to keep going forward. For some of you, your first instinct will probably be to look up answers the moment things stop making sense. How do I operate this machine, what do I use this card for, how do I turn on the light... Just, dont. See if you can survive a few hours without a wiki holding your hand, because the uncertainty is where MOLE works best. MOLE is not constantly throwing jumpscares at you. It becomes scary through darkness, tight hallways, disturbing sounds and that feeling that you may not be as alone as you initially thought. There are a few chase scenes, although I found the slower and quieter moments much more effective at scaring me. Walking through a room you have already visited can suddenly feel completely different when you are no longer sure what is real. One of my friends said that the graphic style reminded them of Mouthwashing, maybe some Iron Lung too, mainly because of the rough retro styled models and textures. However, I wanna add that MOLE is a completely different type of horror game. It focuses much more on machinery, isolation, faith and digging into something that should probably have stayed buried. I think it shouldn't be treated as 'another one of these games', but as its own unique game that you really should give a go. The story here gives it its own identity away from similar styled games! MOLE keeps returning to one disturbing idea: how far would you go to undo something from your past, and what would you be willing to sacrifice for the chance? It also makes you think about why we keep following instructions even when every warning tells us to stop. Do you keep digging because the machine tells you to? The story tells you to? Or because you personally need to know what is waiting below? Welp. Don't go mad along the way down. After it ended, I never dared to run the file again. I wonder if the people who tried are still truly with us. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3749915579 Highly recommended! A great story focused psychological horror with slow tension, and a great piuzzle to piece together. Just keep digging. It likes curious people.
WOAH! What an experience WOW! Sometimes I think to myself, maybe I'm just ageing out of video games because everything just seems less interesting, but before that thought can settle I come across games like this that re-light the gamer fire in me. A wonderful horror game that does a great job of making you so curious you are willing to go through the horror elements if it gives you a chance of finding more stuff out. Not perfect, some minor grievances about some sequences but overall really satisfying. I thought this would be a game I finish in short bursts, but when I reloaded my save for my second session I couldn't put it down. The premise of being trapped on a vessel in a seemingly-but-not-actually desolate location has been done multiple times now but here it still feels refreshing, and I think was part of making exploration and the puzzle elements mostly intuitive and fun. The game makes you feel smart with how technical it makes everything look and sound as you're solving things. The story unfolds gradually in a way that initially keeps raising more questions than answers then ultimately provides sublime revelations I thought had awesome presentation. I felt so sorry for the main character at one point. Great indie horror!
Holy cow. This game took me on a ride I was not prepared for nor will I ever forget. What an incredible experience. The Visual art design, the sound, the whole story was amazing, deep, and emotional. I loved the entire control scheme from start to finish, made me feel like I was actually in the game. Well done Devs, this is probably my favorite indie horror I have played this year. SO damn good!
7.5/10 Uh..
Surprisingly deep for a game about drilling holes.
Anyone who enjoyed Mouthwash will also love this. Great story, well told, excellent psychological horror.
