Probably one of my favorite games now. An exhilarating game with a short and simple but engaging and meaningful story that's very relevant today. I love everything about the game - the music that fluctuates between ambient and intense based on whether or not you're engaged in a puzzle or combat situation, the beautiful vast and colorful environments, and the unique animation style of the cutscenes. All of these things make it such a timeless game!
I like this game quite a lot, it's not just a mindless parkour game because the levels actually make you stop and think before carrying out your actions. I get why some people won't like the combat because it's outdated, but personally I thought it was pretty fun and ironically intense at times
Never seen a game like this one, in the best way possible. Incredible that it was made in 2008!
It’s artistically a beautiful game. The gameplay can get very tedious. The parkour gameplay is really cool. Every mission requires “The perfect run”, so most of the time you have to die over and over until you figure out where to go, what to do, and how to execute the plan perfectly. It’s a much smaller game than I anticipated. The ending was very anti-climactic. There’s one boss battle and it’s so ridiculously hard that it’s funny. In the end, I still wouldn’t recommend playing. It has a lot of potential. A reboot (not remaster) with modern tech would be a godsend.
Great and fun gameplay though somewhat frustrating combat. Still a great pick and enjoyable nonetheless. Highly recommend easy mode if you struggle with timed combat
Father of all parkour games
Mirror's Edge, while being remembered as a timeless original, is not an enjoyable game. I would not recommend playing this game in <current year>, although there are several things that it absolutely aces: Pros: Beautiful and unique art style Unique gameplay and "hint" system Fantastic soundtrack. I actually got into Solar Fields because of this game. I can't emphasize enough how impactful this art direction is. This aces the "daytime cyberpunk" or "solarpunk" look. Neutral: Strong implementation of PhysX hardware acceleration, which has been discontinued. If you encounter moments of unplayable framerates, disable PhysX. Capped framerate by default. Set "bSmoothFrameRate" to "FALSE" in %userprofile%\Documents\EA Games\Mirror's Edge\TdGame\Config\TdEngine.ini. I saw my frames jump from a stuttery ~50 to >500, although I'd still have random dips to the mid 30s. I still ran into screen tearing when I was steady at 500fps, so I would also recommend turning on VSync, if you don't have a VRR monitor. The story is kinda whatever. An uninteresting whodunnit. Cons: Combat. I cannot overemphasize how bad the combat is. Combat is de-incentivized, as you don't carry a gun, and can't pick up guns other than ones you disarm from enemies. The disarm mechanic provides a VERY small window of opportunity to grab an enemy's weapon and incapacitate them, but only if they take a melee swing at you. To make this easier, there is a slow time ability, but this often leads you to dying in slow motion. Enemies will only melee at you if you are close enough that they think they can hit you, but if they do hit you, you are stunned and cannot disarm them. Then they shoot you, because they have a gun. Its so incredibly ass. You do not have a health bar or indicator. Mirror's Edge uses the "edge of my screen gets red" mechanic, which causes unpredictable deaths because you're constantly being shot at. Will 5 random bullets kill you? Usually not. Will two punches kill you? Almost certainly. Questionable controls, even for 2009. EVERY FPS game uses LShift for sprint. You run at all times (LCtrl can be held to walk), and LShift is used for sliding or descending. Your muscle memory will betray you every single time. Forced progression through combat. If you take too long exploring an area, enemies will 'catch up' to you and pop out of nowhere. DICE made such a pretty game, and I can't even take the time to appreciate it! Clunky wall-running and character movement. This feels almost like Assassin's Creed 3, where you'd be trying to control Connor and suddenly he either runs up the side of the building unprompted or leaps off a high distance to his death. I encountered situations where Faith would get stuck on a folded-flat cardboard box on the ground. There is a definite lack of polish to the movement, and since the whole game's selling point is based around movement, I cannot recommend playing this game. An artistic masterpiece. An undercooked idea. A smack that knocks off the rose-colored glasses. Maybe leave this one on the shelf and reflect on your memories from 2009, because this one does not hold up.
