Mirages, known in Chinese as “过阴,” is a haunting narrative-driven horror adventure developed by 漫森游戏工作室 and published by East2West Games. Rooted deeply in traditional Chinese folklore and set during the Republican era, the game intertwines history, superstition, and the supernatural in a story that explores the fragile boundary between life and death. Rather than relying on Western horror conventions, Mirages builds its tension through atmosphere, myth, and cultural authenticity. It’s a story about spirits, rituals, and fate, where the dead linger among the living, and the line between salvation and damnation is blurred by human desire and guilt. This is not merely a horror experience—it’s a tale about the consequences of imbalance in a world where the living meddle too freely with the world of ghosts. The story begins with an eerie and unforgettable premise: seven brides arrive in a small town for a mysterious ritual and vanish without a trace, leaving the local residents terrified and confused. You play as Yao Lu, a descendant of a family responsible for guiding souls between the living world and the underworld. As the equilibrium of Yin and Yang collapses, Yao Lu must uncover the cause of the disturbance and navigate a series of nightmarish encounters that span both human corruption and supernatural wrath. The narrative blends folklore elements such as ghost marriages, spirit guides, corpse-walking rituals, and ancestral curses into a cohesive and unsettling tale. Through multiple branching paths and dual endings, the game encourages players to make moral and emotional choices that shape the final outcome, exploring the complex relationship between fear, redemption, and the inevitability of fate. Visually, Mirages is striking in its presentation. The developers employ a 2.5D perspective that creates a cinematic feeling of immersion while maintaining the claustrophobia essential to its horror. Every frame feels meticulously composed: candlelit hallways flicker with shadows, mist drifts over abandoned courtyards, and the spectral glow of spirit lamps paints the world in hues of decay and memory. The setting captures the essence of early 20th-century China, blending period detail with supernatural unease. The art design leans toward stylization rather than photorealism, which enhances the dreamlike quality of the experience. The sound design complements this perfectly—low drums, distorted whispers, and the melancholy strains of traditional Chinese instruments heighten the tension without resorting to cheap jump scares. The voice acting, delivered entirely in Chinese, lends a layer of authenticity that reinforces the game’s cultural roots, though the lack of English localization may limit its accessibility for non-Chinese speakers. The gameplay structure mirrors the game’s deliberate pacing. Mirages combines exploration, dialogue, and light puzzle-solving with moments of stealth and danger. The player must often avoid supernatural threats rather than confront them, emphasizing vulnerability and observation over combat. Progressing through the story involves piecing together clues, interacting with spirits, and making difficult choices that determine the fate of the characters. The branching narrative ensures that each playthrough feels distinct, rewarding those who pay close attention to the lore and underlying symbolism. In one route, compassion and understanding might lead to catharsis; in another, curiosity or greed might unleash punishment. The design evokes the spirit of traditional Chinese ghost stories—slow, methodical, and deeply human beneath the horror. Despite its many strengths, Mirages does struggle with some technical and structural issues. The controls can feel imprecise at times, especially during quick-time events or chase sequences. The fixed camera angles, while stylistically consistent, occasionally obscure navigation or make it difficult to gauge spatial depth. Some later chapters suffer from uneven pacing, with the horror and mystery giving way to slower philosophical dialogue that may feel disjointed to players expecting constant tension. These flaws don’t ruin the experience, but they do make the game feel uneven—its ambition occasionally outpaces its technical refinement. It’s also a relatively short game, and while multiple endings add replay value, the core mechanics remain simple and repetitive across runs. What sets Mirages apart from other horror titles is its commitment to atmosphere and meaning. It’s not a game built around shock value or relentless action, but one that uses its setting and story to evoke dread in a subtler, more spiritual way. Its horror arises not from monsters or gore, but from the weight of tradition, moral consequence, and the fear of losing one’s place in the cosmic order. Every location, from decrepit temples to shadow-drenched mansions, carries emotional resonance, reminding the player that the living world is haunted as much by memory and regret as by ghosts. It’s an approach that makes Mirages stand out among modern horror games, especially for players interested in Eastern mythological storytelling. Ultimately, Mirages is a beautiful, haunting, and imperfect gem—a game that succeeds more as an artistic expression than as a polished commercial product. Its storytelling is bold, its atmosphere powerful, and its thematic depth refreshing in a genre that too often relies on repetition and shock. While it may not appeal to those seeking fast-paced horror or highly interactive gameplay, it rewards patience and reflection. Through its ghostly rituals, tragic fates, and glimpses of redemption, Mirages captures something rare: the quiet terror of the unknown, the sorrow of the past, and the delicate balance between the human and the divine. For anyone drawn to narrative horror steeped in cultural mysticism, it offers an experience both deeply unsettling and profoundly moving. Rating: 7/10
