MIO: Memories in Orbit

Art Direction
The art is fantastic, honestly. The whole hand-drawn, painted vibe looks gorgeous, especially how the lighting interacts with the brushstrokes. Some of the vessel's landscapes are great, though the camera could've done a slightly better job showing them off in a few spots. My only issue is the character and boss designs—most of them just didn't click for me, and MIO's tendrils look kinda weird. Still, it's just a matter of personal opinion, and not enough to drag the score down much. Score: 4.5/5
Combat & Mechanics
I've got a lot of thoughts here. I'm usually not huge on basic combo attacks, but they feel genuinely good in this game. Though they're essential for keeping your energy up and holding your position during boss fights, and some mechanics hold you back. There are some really clunky bits. The down-slash range is way too short. If you miss, there's a huge delay before you can attack again, which got me killed in parkour sections more times than I'd like to admit. Then there's the hairpin, which was my 2nd main damage dealer for bosses. Love the i-frames and mobility, but its visual range is totally misleading. Even 25 hours in, I kept missing it by pixels. It desperately needs a slightly bigger hitbox or more leeway. As for the modifiers? Honestly, they weren't implemented well at all. 90% of them are super niche, cost too many notches, and just aren't that useful. Plus, locking the HUD behind a modifier is a bizarre choice. Some of them even mess up the combat flow (like the heavy strike after a hairpin delaying your next move). I ended up just slapping on passive damage buffs the entire playthrough. All that said, the general movement and combat are still very fluid. Score: 3.8/5
Difficulty & Level Design
Oh, the runbacks. I don't inherently hate runbacks, but in this game, they are absolutely terrible. Checkpoints are so incredibly sparse that every single death means a massive trek just to get back to the fight—even for the final boss. It just eats up so much of your time. This ties directly into the game's difficulty problem: the bosses aren't actually hard (none of them!). The difficulty feels artificial because the game just makes you walk so long that you forget the boss patterns, or you take stupid damage on the way back. The "hardest" boss in the game is literally just an easy boss with a cheap one-shot mechanic. Really? On the flip side, some of the platforming sections are hellish in a good way (I love hard parkour sections, even if they take my sanity away). The game delivers on tough platforming, even if a ton of my deaths were caused by that short down-slash and the misleading hairpin range. Score: 2.5/5
Soundtrack & Audio
The OST is really good—unique, consistent, and fits perfectly. The only thing missing is more intense musical intros for new areas to match the art direction. Sound design for attacks and enemies is solid too, except for a weird static noise tied to some of the modifiers. Score: 4.8/5 TL;DR: A gorgeous game with incredibly fluid movement, great map, creative bossfights, hard parkour sections, but held back by frustratingly sparse checkpoints, tedious boss runbacks, and an upgrade system full of useless modifiers. The artificial difficulty is annoying, but it's worth playing if you enjoy challenging platforming and have the patience for the trek.
My overall Score: 8/10
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,402 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

Absolutely gorgeous game, gorgeous story, and gorgeous mechanics. I can't say I'd recommend playing the game to everyone. It kicked even my ass. But, I would absolutely recommend watching it if nothing else. It's a story that deserves to be seen. For new players who want advice, though: Hairpin > Everything else. I will die on that hill. If you liked Nine sols, you'll love this game, and vice versa. The French win gaming again. Really important and narratively hidden spoilers below:
The only real thing I'd say is that the secret final battle I feel could have been more cinematic. I just wish there had been a phase where Ati came through and helped fight Shii for the fate of the mission; And I'm saying that as someone who died dozens of times to phase 1. Which just goes to show how compelling the story was, that I would be willing to suffer more for more story. But, I'm still happy with the ending regardless. Thanks for everything, Asma. Praise the voice, praise the mission, praise the travellers.
Worthy among the metroidvania classics.
Amazing story, has very nice combat and platforming, feels like hollowknight but I personally think it on the same level as it.
Hated to hear that the studio who made this got shut down because I thought this was a great metroidvania despite its flaws. My main critique of Mio is the combat is fairly basic. Even with the upgrades I kinda wished the combat was just a bit deeper. But with that said you can see that I put 50 hours into this and that's not by accident lol. It goes without saying but the visuals are gorgeous. When I found out this was the same team that made Shady Part Of Me it made sense because that's also artistically a beautiful game. There's something about the atmosphere while you're exploring the vessel that had me hooked and I couldn't put the controller down. The movement and the platforming is so satisfying. I also wasn't expecting to enjoy the story as much as I did. You get to meet a lot of interesting characters and by the end I thought they did a great job of bringing the story together. It had a lot more emotional depth than I was expecting. I'd encourage anybody to do some of the extras in here even if you need to look up a guide to figure some things out. I think it's worth every second. To circle back to the combat. Mio has some FIRE boss fights. And I was impressed with how this game handles difficulty. Bosses progressively get harder but I never felt like I was getting thrown to the wolves. Now with that said there are some tough boss fights for sure. But in my opinion all of the hardest boss fights are optional. Not to say that if you just play it straight that you won't run into some challenges. But if you want some real smoke make sure you do some adventuring aside from just the main bosses. Believe me there are some firm skill check boss fights waiting for you. One in particular is probably an all time favorite boss fight just because of how well designed and challenging it was. Also if you're somebody who enjoys platforming there are some tough platforming sections in this game. But also like the boss fights the hardest ones are optional and off the beaten path. There's one in specific that had me stuck for hours, but the feeling I had when I finally finished it was unmatched. I don't think Mio is a perfect game. And I hate that this studio got closed because I think if they took another shot at making a metroidvania they could 1000 percent knock it all the way out the park. But the positives for me still outweighed the negatives. This is probably a top five game of the year for me. As somebody who loves metroidvanias I think this was still executed well. Lastly, there's a controversial part of this game I wanna mention that's a mini spoiler. And I'm only bringing it up because for some it could be a reason you won't wanna play this. So, read the rest of this review at your own risk. MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD During the game you will have moments where you permanently lose health. I won't say why it happens but it's a thing that does happen. Some of the upgrades you get can help make life a bit easier on you but it's something you'll still have to deal with. Personally, I didn't feel like it ruined my experience at all. But I'm also a bit of a masochist when it comes to games but you may not feel the same. For some folks this could be a deal breaker. It was annoying at first. But it made me tighten up and not play so reckless. So yeah, just wanted to throw that out there.
Even though it's very frustrating at times, I think overall it is a pretty good game, but be aware that you'll need strong nerves to play this game, especially the further you go
i love robots
Great art, great music. Combat is pretty simple, does the job. The plaforming is fun, can feel pretty punishing at times but its never too frustrating repeating sections to overcome them. Really fun exploration and discovery if it sinks its hooks into you.
TITLE: MIO: Memories in Orbit Genre: Metroidvania Graphics: 5/5 Character Design: 5/5 Premise: 5/5 Gameplay: 8/10 Lore: 4/5 Story: 8/10 Progression: 5/10 Music/Sound: 10/10 Difficulty: 9/10 stars Gametime: 25ishhrs Bugs: None Overall: 50/60 Recommended: Yes (note: finished true ending, did not 100% all collectibles) _ This game is great, but man is it defined by its frustrating moments more than anything else. Peak watercolor art style paired with excellent music, great character/boss designs, smooth mechanics what could go wrong seems like a great recipe for success. It is! The majority of the core function of the game is incredibly fun to play but there are moments in this game where the soul gets completely sucked out. I made sure to do a wholistic step back when reviewing this one in particular because it really fell into a trap. 3 key things where this game becomes unbelievably frustrating and it will hurt the overall experience. 1) The f-ing Crucible, this is disgusting. No further elaboration is needed. This will test your resolve (yes i finished it) 2) Sol and Vin - Horrific bossfight design. Throughout the game you will fight hard and rage inducing bosses, but at the end of the day they feel fair and rewarding to beat. Sol and Vin are the opposite of that for 2 reasons: you die in 2 hits no matter what, and the floor disappears so you fight in the air the whole time. There were other bosses that made me rage, this one made me want to quit, so i ended up turning on eroding bosses for them. 3) backtracking and directional clarity - most metroidvania games don't hold your hand at all, and that's fine. In a game like this however when many mechanics are locked behind collectibles like the candles, you know you need 12, and you had no log telling you that you ended up dropping 2 off already, so you spend hours backtracking for missing candles only to discover you have all 12... yeah. These harsh criticisms do come from a place of genuine respect for the game. Within the genre, this is only overshadowed by Ender Lilies and Magnolia for me personally and its a shame the studio ended up going under from this. Not many games have this level of character and aura while also making you want to jump off a bridge. All in all, this is a game fans of the genre should check out, but there will be infuriating moments that are going to test your testicular fortitude.
