Cool Idea but keeps crashing whenever I want to change values.
So I finally caved last night and bought Midinous - not at the sale price either. What took me over the edge where I couldn't wait any longer, was a tutorial that explained how to use logic nodes, which allowed me to implement 2 flipflops in series and a demultiplexer to allow the logic to disable and enable large circuits to do chord progressions. There is really nothing that can't be done with this tool as far as generative music is concerned, and there is an intuitive feeling for rearranging timing which I think is better than what a regular DAW will provide when editing a MIDI file. And you don't have to be as deterministic as what I described above - it also provides randomization and probabilities - so you never really need to go to the level I went to by using logic nodes. You can avoid them altogether and still get really good results. My favorite part? I was able to do all the above by using the demo - it just limits how many nodes total can be used, and it doesn't allow reading saved files (but it does allow saving). It was fully functional for connecting to my DAW and driving multiple channels on a VST. This is an indispensable tool for making generative music. UPDATE: Be aware though, some of the stuff I'm able to do using logic it would have been REALLY nice to have as built-in, for quality of life. Even though I can, doesn't mean I should have to, and that would open this software up to many more people. So what I list in my original review as a feature is more like a very tedious workaround. If you are not familiar with logic gates and setting them up, you'll be limited to purely random music generation, which can be a bit frustrating.
this sequencer speaks to my soul.
Fantastic, fun little program for creating interesting and evolving music. I've been using sending midi to Ableton Live - must say I've found it to be very solid. I've made a few tracks layering other instruments on a Midinous sequence or totally standalone to create infinite random sequences. It's a great creative tool for getting an idea or simply noodling about!
Intuitive and interesting midi generator, simple concept but can have a huge scope for complexity.
Midinous is a slightly involved yet rather pleasant and almost futuristic way of making generative music. Once you get it working with your DAW of choice, the fun and experimentation is worth the time and effort it takes to make something you will enjoy as a melody, arpeggio, bassline, drum pattern etc. Midinous is how you learn how to release control (in a way) while exploring the possibilities of getting exactly what you want, or getting something you didn't know you wanted.
Really neat tool for working with midi. It runs smoothly and I haven't had any major issues with it.
A truly spectacular piece of software. Stable. Functional. As a sequencer you; actually, your human brain is the only thing limiting what you can build with it. Get yourself an evaluation copy of reaper and scrape up a few plugins and samples then see what you can build.
Just incredible fun (if you know your way around music, at least roughly)
Yes. Ja. Si. Sim. Oui. Nu.
