Midinous

super cool sequencer!!! ive given it a lil spin, first major thing ive noticed is timing issues. probably not as much of a problem if ur just making ambient stuff but i tried to program a drum beat and it was flam central, everything's on the grid so im not sure why that might be the case but it does kinda limit what i thought it'd be capable of, was hoping to make some crazy algorithmic breakbeats but its lacking the rhythmic precision i'd want to do such things.

Totally digital music n00b here - it's a fun program to play with, you do need a "DAW" or virtual keyboard etc in order to make the sounds, other than the built in tone. So from one newbie to another, here is how I finally got it to make sounds: - installed "Reaper" DAW (free to try) - go to preferences and make sure on MIDI in the Midinous stuff is enabled - go to track -> insert virtual instrument as new track - choose ReaSamplOMatic as the instrument - on the next page choose "BROWSE" and pick an sound file to use - under Mode, choose "Mode semi tone shifted" - on midi channel set to 1 or some other channel (you'll see these channels in Midinous) - check "obey note offs" - close window - back on the start screen you can check the red circle with the white circle in it "arm for recording" - now when you play Midinous stuff you should hear things on the Channel you selected Hope this helps a touch, maybe I can make better instructions later. If you're like me, it's a whole new rabbit hole to fall down xD

This non-linear midi sequencer is only available here on Steam, which doesn't suit some people and I can sympathize with some of the arguments/opinions, but only to a certain degree. I don't (relatively) care that Midinous is a on Steam only thing, I have countless plugins on different computers, many standalones, a huge list of browser web apps/software and even many more different stuff, so what? and therefore it doesn't bother me as long as it is useful and functional. Especially since it's also a matter of taste and should be considered individually; some people prefer a grid-based thing like this one, while others find everything in it a bit fiddly and less appealing. For those interested, I mostly use Midinous for experimenting and generating soundscapes/textures. I often use my CMI V from Arturia as a standalone paired with it and so far I have been able to achieve some very nice results, like the thing I did for a friend who needed very special atmospheric background music for his art exhibition. When it comes to hearing a reference of what the program does without any other software, than there is an internal standard synth with several different waveforms: sine, square, triangle, sawtooth, ramp etc. So one approach would be to open Midinous and choose new colors for that user interface and according to your current feeling, select a random bpm and generate your first structure of MIDI data and listen to that with the internal synth. If you kinda like what you hear, try to change a few notes here and there and play with the possibilities of how the patches can be connected, then open a music program like: Arturia Pigments, Wedge Force Hydro, Initial Audio Sektor or AudioThing SX1000 and let yourself be surprised by what suddenly happens. Or you can synch it like I did once with Ableton, or the DAW of your choice like Reaper, Bitwig or Logic. And a little advice for those of you who are still quite inexperienced with but eager to learn such things, take your time, be patient with yourself, work with the manual and have fun while you learn and try things out. I can definitely recommend Midinous if you want to create complex sequences or if you just want to experiment with sounds and audio design in general.

On a basic level this is a fun tool to use for creating simple loops, experimenting with different scales, tempos and time signatures as well as breaking some creator's block. On a more advanced level it's an extremely powerful and intuitive visual sequencer where the only limits are of those of the person using it. If you're like me that gets put off using sequencers due to generally crappy and outdated UI's, feeling like I'm programming a spaceship and them being a pain in the ass to use, you're in luck with Midinous, tho of course to get the most out of it you will need a DAW along with some nice VSTs. People say "If it feels to good to be true then it probably is" well Midinous definitely feels too good to be true yet here it is. Highly Recommended.

Thus is a good way to make interesting MIDI sequences. However, it needs to be available as a MIDI Plug-in. Having it work through Steam isn't a good way!

On Linux this expects jackd to run, if you use pippewire there is a jackd-pipewire package (on arch) that offers a compatibility layer. But even then, you'll need to use a jackd plugboard (something like carla) to connect the midi out to a DAW like reaper. It won't show up as a midi device, so In reaper you have to make a virtual midi input so that you have something to plug it into. It's a bit of a shame this isn't explained better, because the software is really cool, but i think a lot of people never get into it only because the initial UX is really confusing. I wish this was an open-source project so i could fix some stuff in it lol.

This is probably the most dynamic and coolest sequencer i've ever seen. Routing everything to channels makes it incredibly easy to use and getting midi information from this thing is incredible. Not without a couple of minor flaws but i've never seen one that a quick save and reload won't fix. A lot more intuitive to use than i would have thought, amazing product 10/10 love it. The developer also has a video on YouTube going through all of it's functionality so if you're a nerd like me and love the thing the video is really helpful. (video titled: Midinous MIDI sequencer features and functions stream) I have had Ableton crash while using it a couple of times but honestly even with that in mind I still think it's 100% worth it.

This is a great, portable (DRM not required) MIDI generator and visual sequencer. If you have a DAW (recommended) or other synthesizers, you can send MIDI out from Midonous and program interesting, evolving patterns, melodies, and pure chaos. Benn Jordan (the Flashbulb guy) worked on this.

Very interesting way to make music, I was able to get it to work with FL Studio quite nicely. I think I will be mainly using this to make beats as I find midi charts kinda boring.

A great tool for creators to use! Syncs well with Ableton and has provided me with another method to break through those creative blocks.
