I bought this game for €15 out of pure nostalgia, since Mia and Me was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Sadly, this turned out to be a huge disappointment. First of all, this game feels like a lazy cash grab aimed at kids. Honestly, it could have been a free mobile game and would still be bad. Gameplay issues: The game is not PC-friendly at all. The instructions are only written for controllers, and they are very unclear. If you play on keyboard, you’re left completely on your own to figure it out. The controls are broken. For example, pressing left often makes the unicorn go right. This doesn’t just make the game frustrating, it makes it borderline unplayable. Levels are randomly generated, which often leads to obstacle placements that are literally impossible to pass. Steam achievements don’t seem to work. I’ve completed the tutorial and even leveled up a unicorn, but nothing unlocked. Other problems: The cutscenes are poorly made, with random, soulless dialogue that doesn’t follow any coherent story. The “unicorns get tired” mechanic adds nothing, since you can recharge their hearts in under 10 seconds. It feels pointless. Overall, this game has zero polish, no real story, and broken mechanics. It’s extremely disappointing because a Mia and Me game could have had great potential if done right. Instead, it’s just a rushed, poorly made cash grab.

Mia and me – Magic Friends, developed by Blue Ocean Entertainment and published by Markt+Technik Verlag GmbH, is a light, child-friendly adventure that draws directly from the colorful fantasy world of the Mia and Me franchise. Set in the magical land of Centopia, the game invites players to explore a whimsical environment filled with unicorns, floating islands, and familiar characters, presenting itself as an accessible entry point for younger audiences rather than a mechanically complex or narratively ambitious experience. The gameplay is built around simple exploration and collection tasks. Players guide Mia and her companions through various themed locations, riding unicorns across open areas while gathering items and completing small objectives tied to protecting the world from recurring threats. The structure is easy to follow, with clear goals and minimal challenge, ensuring that players can progress without frustration. This straightforward design makes the game approachable, especially for children or those new to gaming, as it avoids complicated systems or demanding mechanics. However, the simplicity that defines the experience also limits its depth. Most activities revolve around the same core actions—moving through environments, collecting resources, and repeating similar tasks with little variation. While there are minor systems in place, such as caring for or upgrading unicorns, these features remain shallow and do not significantly influence gameplay. As a result, the sense of progression is minimal, and the experience can begin to feel repetitive after a relatively short period of time. The narrative aspect is similarly restrained. Although the game is set within a well-established fantasy universe, it does little to expand on its source material. The story serves primarily as a backdrop, providing context for the player’s actions without offering substantial development or emotional engagement. Familiar themes of friendship and teamwork are present, but they are conveyed in a straightforward manner, with little emphasis on character growth or meaningful storytelling. Visually, the game attempts to capture the bright and magical tone of Centopia. Environments are colorful and varied in concept, with different areas reflecting the whimsical nature of the setting. However, the technical execution does not fully match the ambition of the art direction. Animations can feel stiff, and environmental detail is limited, which reduces the overall sense of immersion. While the presentation is serviceable and appropriate for its target audience, it lacks the polish and refinement that might make it more appealing to a broader range of players. The audio design follows a similar pattern, offering basic sound effects and light background music that support the atmosphere without standing out. The overall presentation is consistent with the game’s scope, but it does little to elevate the experience beyond its fundamental design. One of the more significant limitations is the lack of variety and long-term engagement. The game does not introduce new mechanics or challenges as it progresses, relying instead on repetition of its core loop. This makes it well-suited for short play sessions but less effective as a longer experience. Players seeking depth or evolving gameplay systems are unlikely to find them here, as the design remains largely unchanged from beginning to end. Despite these shortcomings, Mia and me – Magic Friends does succeed in appealing to its intended audience. Its accessible controls, gentle pacing, and recognizable setting make it a comfortable and approachable experience for younger players or fans of the series. It provides a safe, low-pressure environment for exploration, which can be enjoyable within the right context. Ultimately, Mia and me – Magic Friends is a modest adaptation that captures the basic charm of its source material but struggles to expand beyond it. It offers a simple and accessible experience that aligns with its audience, but its lack of depth, variety, and technical polish prevent it from standing out as a more fully realized game. It works best as a casual introduction to gaming or a companion piece for fans, rather than as a compelling standalone adventure. Rating: 5/10
