I really want to like this game, but it has so many flaws that make it a frustrating experience: - The editor is pretty bad. No syntax highlighting, no error reporting, decent but annoying keybinds (just let me use TAB to indent). It has a maximum vertical height with no scroll support, meaning you have a limited amount of lines to work with. Want to add some extra comments? Tough luck, no space for that. Want to nicely format your code by putting each definition on its own line? Nope, you have to put some definitions on the same line because the dev was didn't implement a scrolling system. It makes it harder to reason about your code when you're trying to debug what you're missing, which leads nicely into the second point... - There is 0 debugging or visualization functionality. This is especially painful at the last "level" where you make the second half of the CPU. If you've forgotten to wire up 1 connection, good luck figuring that out. There is no highlighting of a symbol when you put your cursor over it, no way of listing which connections of your components you've used, you can't view the internal state of registers during verification (why???) and there you can't view anything about the simulation except for what your inputs and outputs are. Expect to spend half an hour on the last level trying to find the last connection you're missing to make the verification pass. - The whole game leads up to making a working CPU, except you don't actually do that. You make memory modules, an ALU, an instruction decoder, the execution unit, but then instead of then wiring it all together, you just get the ending screen?? This is incredibly unsatisfying, since you just spent a few hours building a CPU from NAND gates and you know each individual component works. - The game is too short. Perhaps that's a side effect from "only" making a CPU and nothing else, but I expect that if you have some HDL/FPGA experience, you can beat this game within the return window. - With the exception of some of the earlier modules, the instructions are written in a way where you don't feel like you "invent" anything; you're just following instructions. You can implement the entire instruction decoder and CPU by mindlessly translating the specification into gates and you'll have no idea why any of the design decisions were made. I bought this game with the intention of designing a toy CPU in FPGA later, but I'm writing this review right after finishing the game and I don't really feel like I'll remember any of it for later. On the bright side, this game does provide a functioning CPU design (although you don't get to assemble it) which you can port to a HDL of your choice or implement in a tool where you can actually visualize what you're doing. You can write your own assembler for the instruction-set which sounds like a fun exercise too. If you have 0 experience with hardware design, this is probably a decent introduction, but I'm convinced there are other tutorials out there that may be better (Nand2Tetris anyone?). Also, there are achievements. That's nice I guess. You don't have to do anything special to unlock them besides beating the game.

What I liked is how the game teaches without overexplaining. It doesn’t hold your hand too much, but it gives you just enough tools to figure things out on your own. When you finally solve a puzzle that had you stuck for a while, it actually feels rewarding, like you earned it. The minimalist design works really well here. There’s no distraction, no unnecessary visuals, just the puzzle in front of you. It keeps your focus exactly where it needs to be. But at the same time, I can see how that might turn some people off. If you’re not into this kind of logical thinking, the game can feel a bit dry or even frustrating. Another thing is that it’s very niche. This isn’t a game you play to relax in the usual sense, it’s more like a mental workout. Some puzzles can take time, and if you’re not in the mood for that, it might not click with you. Visually, it’s extremely simple, almost like a clean interface rather than a “game.” But that’s clearly intentional, and it fits the design perfectly. Audio is minimal as well, mostly just subtle sounds that don’t distract from the puzzles. Overall, I get why it sits in a strong positive range. It’s not trying to appeal to everyone, but for people who enjoy logic puzzles and problem-solving, it does its job really well. Disappointingly bare experience in the "from NAND to CPU" genre. You do get to build a CPU, but you don't get the satisfaction of actually seeing it do anything, programming it in any way. The prize for tediously rewriting the connections written out for you in the problem description into the syntax of a hardware description language is only a popup window with undecipherable testcases.
