Wish I could recommend this, because it nailed the metal slug vibe in some ways. The problem is basically that this is a game where the bones are good, but then there isn't much content to make use of them. -Alternate loadouts and mods are very low impact and boring -Every run is very samey. I know people say this about roguelikes a lot, but this one is the worst i've played in that regard. There are only 4 areas, and after your first run you'll have seen every enemy, mission, and boss in the entire game. There aren't any alternate routes, It's the same 2-3 mission types, and upgrades dont add anything to how you play really. -Kills don't feel satisfying, because boss fights and most stages just kind of dump endless enemies on you. If it's not a "kill them all" mission, then all you want to do is make a beeline to the objective/kill you need because everything else just wastes your time. -Doesn't feel super tactical, since the game pretty much gives you shields for running max distance all the time. I get the "run n gun" idea, but in practice it feels kind of dumb to play around the weird hit patterns most weapons have, cover, momentum, and synch. Basically, this was potential for a great game that fell flat in execution and was low on content. Its not a bad game. I had fun for like 2 playthroughs, but then the thought of any more was an absolute nope. Same 4 biomes, same four bosses, just not enough variety. Its a game that screams for more content via dlc or modding. They didn't even give us an alien stage. It's metal slug!
I won this game through SteamGifts. I'll admit when I won this game, I wasn't convinced I'd enjoy it. Turns out I was pleasantly surprised! The pixel art is fantastic, the animations are full of personality, and the tactical gameplay is genuinely fun. It does a great job of translating the classic Metal Slug feel into a turn-based roguelite. My biggest issue is that the roguelite side of things starts to feel a bit repetitive after a while. There just isn't enough variety in enemies, and the pool of upgrades and abilities feels a little too limited, especially considering how often you'll see the same options pop up during a run. I kept wishing there was a bit more to shake things up. The achievement list also felt a bit bloated. I usually enjoy going for 100%, but this time I just wasn't interested because so many of them felt unnecessary rather than rewarding. Overall though, I had a much better time than I expected. It may not have enough variety to keep me playing forever, but it's a fun tactical spin on the Metal Slug formula that's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the series or roguelites.
𝕄𝕀𝕊𝕊𝕀𝕆ℕ... 𝕊𝕋𝔸ℝ𝕋!
For decades, the Metal Slug series has been synonymous with frantic run-and-gun action, explosive set pieces, and beautifully animated pixel art. Metal Slug Tactics takes that familiar formula and reimagines it as a turn-based tactical game --a risky move that surprisingly pays off. Metal Slug Tactics is still, somehow, its own game. It doesn't copy mechanics of other strategy titles but it keeps the basics. Battles are all about aggressive play, rewarding movement and positioning instead of passive defense. Characters can snowball through the battlefield through their unique stats, passives and active abilities and fans of the franchise will LOVE to play as their favourite characters, such as Marco, Fio, Eri, Trevor and even characters from the Ikari Warrior team, so basically King of Fighters (Clark, Ralf, Leona). You unlock more of the game as you unlock more achievements. Yes, most of the game, then, rewards you with more of it as you show adaptation and evolution in the battlefield. The transition to tactical format could've stipped away the series' personality, but the devs here clearly understood what makes Metal Slug, well, Metal Slug... It's the unique pixel art that features exceptional movement, fluid animations and expressive character designs that rival even the most classic entries in the genre. Another welcome addition is the roguelite structure. Some, of course, will find the four recurrent regions in the game boring and repetitive at some point, I found it adds a layer of "trial and error" to the game, as no single run will be exactly as the next and these characters all have different loadouts and different strategies they use. An example of this would be Fio, which you can build as a machinegun powerhouse, OR as a buffing support for your team, who can reposition her allies and buff them with defense and dodge, the same way Tarma can be one of the bulkiest tanks on the battlefield, or a simple medic. However, the game is not that perfect, as the random nature of some runs can occasionally lead to uneven difficulty spikes, where one level is a breeze and the next is total torture. The soundtrack, though, helps wrestle through it, it's amazing, catchy, and I've finished the game, like fully, and it's still stuck in my head and I can't get it out of my head. Despite these concerns, Metal Slug Tactics succeeds where many genre transformations have failed. It respects source material while confidently exploring new territories. the result is a tactical strategy game that feels unmistakably Metal Slug-est; fast, explosive, humorous and endlessly charming.
Ok, i bought this game on release and played plenty so i can give a review, i actually held on for a time, because i thought the devs would at least fix some of my worries, but enough time has passed and they never fixed anything so here it goes: the game itself its not bad at all, you quickly understand what its trying to do and how it plays, you suddenly become good enough to exploit the strenght of the characters and up the difficulty. but all of this is ruined by one thing, BUGS, there have been so many runs that ended in a soft-lock because the programmers didnt do their work correctly, a bad turn, a bad re-start, or just the use of some skills in certain ways can make the game soft-locked and you cant continue because either the enemies get stuck, or your characters get stuck, or the menus get stuck, or the maps simply wont continue the next turn, and its such a waste of time because each run is like 1 hour, this has even happened to me on the final boss fight, so imagine that, surviving 3 boss fights and end up getting soft-locked during the final of the final. if it wasnt for this, i would recommend it, but as it is, and knowing that the devs seemingly abandoned it, then i wont recommend.
Metal Slug tactics is a Nintendo Switch game that was ported (badly) to PC as an attempt from SNK to wring blood out of a stone and abuse the Metal Slug franchise for every penny they can squeeze out of it. It's getting worse than the bit in Spaceballs when they showed off all the merchandise like "Spaceballs: The Toilet Paper". This time they decided to see if PC gamers would tolerate a Nintendo Switch turn based tactical game if they didn't bother testing it properly (it's full of bugs) and did a mediocre effort porting it to PC. And even for a Nintendo Switch "roguelike", this is a shallow and pointless wreck of a game. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. Because this is designed for handheld/portable gaming appliances, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the low power handheld gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the mobile game developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for low power handhelds forces upon a game. While this might run well on a Steam Deck, we must remember the vast majority of gamers here are gaming on PC. To make matters worse, not only does this have pixelcrap "art", the pixelcrap isn't even applied consistently across the whole game. That jarring mismatch ruins any genuine "retro" authenticity from this pixelcrap nightmare. The inconsistency with the pixelcrap is a tacit admission that the developer was aware they could have done better but chose not to. Making a game look bad, on purpose. That's an insult. While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals. The game features no proper level design or game/story flow/plot, as they opted to try to use samey repetitive procgen algorithms as a substitute for adding such content to the game, to avoid doing the important job of level/map design. As a result, the game doesn't actually have any content worth mentioning, just endless, boring, repetitive, soulless algorithmically generated sameyness. Developers must learn that procedural generation is not an acceptable substitute for content. We know Roguelites and Roguelikes are mostly slapped together by developers who are basically lazy and don't want to create bespoke content, resulting in that shallow, repetitive, soulless experience of procgen algorithms instead of content, but this is even shallower than most, there's just a couple of map forms and a couple of randomly placed enemy types, so you've seen the entire game after the first couple of missions. Worse, you have to grind those samey missions to unlock more of the "game", such as it is. This is painful, especially considering the woeful visuals and technical quality. These technical shortcomings push this game below minimum standards for any competently developed modern PC game. You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality game this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Metal Slug Tactics has the preposterous price of $25 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. For comparison, the INSANE $25 asking price for this game could get you games like "Crusader Kings III", "Mount and Blade 2 Bannerlord" or "Rimworld". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. No pixelcrap is worth $25. If developers want to get paid the same kind of money as real game developers who know how to do graphics properly, they need to learn how to do graphics properly.
Metal Slug Tactics was a pleasant surprise. It successfully brings the classic Metal Slug charm into a turn-based tactical format while keeping the series' iconic style and personality. The pixel art is gorgeous, the animations are fantastic, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the action. The gameplay encourages constant movement, making battles feel dynamic and rewarding. Learning how to combine different characters and abilities adds a lot of depth, and every run feels fresh thanks to the roguelite elements and progression system. Whether you're a long-time Metal Slug fan or simply enjoy tactical games, this one is definitely worth checking out. It's stylish, challenging, and incredibly fun, with plenty of replay value. A great tribute to the classic series and an easy recommendation from me.
somewhat buggy, but overall good. shame the studio is gone.
For a "roguelike" wannabe, it takes way too long to finish a single run. I needed around 3 hours to do a single run from start to finish, which is too long for a single try, and to just upgrade a few miniscule things (felt like less than 5% of the shop). Combat it alright, but some maps have too many enemies for its own good, especially in the "protect Rumi" type of missions, that can end in a single turn if the RNG is not on your side. Overall, a very subpar turn-based roguelike compared to what else is on the market. 5/10
